《Era: Dawn of the New Gods》Chapter 87: Skill Teaching 3

Deji said “The first thing you need to know is that your abilities depend on your battle mindset and your body type and stat build. There’s a lot of science behind it but that’s what you need to know.
As an example, Funmi’s Karma skill-“Funmi interrupted saying “You have to say the whole thing” but Deji continued “is dependent on Funmi’s energy and agility, mostly her agility. Now can anyone with a high enough agility and energy learn it? No.
Because of her body type or her body’s capabilities she is able to make the small and graceful motions that are required to use her skill.
But that isn’t all her battle mindset is very key as she is one to enjoy fights even if she’s being kicked around she enjoys the challenge, that means her mind doesn’t go into disarray unlike other people when she’s pushed around in combat by and opponent with higher strength and agility, she remains calm and is able to focus on allowing the force of the opponent flow into her and around her without instinctively rejecting it like most people would, maybe she’s just a masochist or you could think of it as a higher form of Aikido”. Funmi snorted at Deji’s description.
Deji continued “The Aura utilization skill is similar but is more reliant on the mind than the body as it is an energy conversion and so many of you have it even though you don’t have similar bodies or stat builds. From what most of you have said you all got these skills when you were in peril, but the difference with Aura is that it required more… guts. You refused to give in even when you could safely leave the island and that led to you being trapped but that is beside the point” Gbenga and his group looked away in shame when Deji pointed out their naivety.
Deji continued “You refused to give up even if you were not in a life threatening situation; you had a lot of drive, motivation, guts. It seems that aura is a form of energy that everyone has in a miniscule amount, the amount of it depends on your drive, if you are driven to the point of doing stupid things then your aura would be able to connect properly with your energy and your energy would turn to aura. The same could be said for Lekan as he went to fight a Rank 5 undead against orders because he said he wanted to be the best but from what you’ve told me, he must have been using aura involuntarily before and the fight against the Rank 5 caused his motivation to rise forward.

I don’t know why the colors are different. It must have something to do with your personal motivation. If you find out I kindly ask that you tell me, the colors are linked to their abilities which Mira seems to have taught you how to activate… Lekan, that fool, he doesn’t even know how to activate aura”. The students and Bola nodded.
Deji continued “For Mira, your case is the best. You can teach almost anybody your skill. I feel it’s more appropriate to call it a technique as it should be possible for anyone to learn it. The mindset your skill requires is the state of mind everyone tries to achieve, a level headed state. This state of mind only came to you when you accepted death.
What a great saying ‘I will certainly die, I just have to postpone the time of my death a little’ postponing your appointment with death, it’s a lovely way to think in battle, I will certainly have to write that down somewhere”
Mira blushed at his praise and he continued “For the body requirements, it doesn’t require you to do specific moves so I don’t think it will require a certain body type, but we’ll have to see as time goes on if it does. But I believe it has a stat build, but the stat build is very essential to many people. It seems to utilize your intelligence and senses. The greatest thing about it is that it doesn’t require energy; hence it doesn’t require any proficiency in energy control.
That’s why I feel anyone can learn it, but the proficiency is very varied. I am able to see through people’s habits when I experience their fights. It’s not the same thing but it certainly is an iteration where I use only intelligence and no senses with no mindset; in other words a cheap copy.
Your technique requires a high proficiency, which comes as stats. The higher your stats the more things you’ll be able to do with the technique, just like other skills. Your technique is basically you analyzing the minute details that our brain chooses to ignore, especially in life threatening combat.
It takes the mind away from instinctual combat and brings a fully tactical battle style where both you and your opponent are just chess pieces, one is not more important than the other. With more proficiency, you were able do more than just perfectly time your attacks, which I am able to also do, you could perfectly predict you opponents moves, control your reflex actions and sense things at a higher level, in other word you had more details.

If you don’t mind can I suggest a name for the skill?” Mira, Bola and the teens looked hopeful and nodded while Funmi’s face fell. Deji said “We can call it Error Correction”. The faces of everyone fell and Deji hurriedly tried to explain “Your ability gives you more details and adds them into your battle consideration, which is exactly how error correction works as errors are formed from a lack of detail so-“
Funmi interrupted “I would have preferred Kick Ass mode but since it’s not my skill and people hate the word ‘ass’ call it High Mind. From your explanation it is something all High Humans can do or should be able to so it works well and it conveys what it does perfectly” Everyone voiced their agreement to Funmi’s suggestion and Deji just shook his head and moved on.
“For Bella’s ability… It is a mystery to me. I only just discovered this psychic energy and what it was today, I don’t know how to sense if other people have little and a lot, I didn’t even know that I had it. For now the best way to teach it is for you, who can sense psychic energy, to scout for people who have high amounts of it and take them under your wing. I don’t know how to train it, I’m sorry I couldn’t be of much help”
Bella looked crestfallen; she was the odd one out. Gbenga smiled and said “It’s fine, that just means when you discover how to train it you won’t share it with the sanctuary” Deji’s eyes widened in shock and he said “NO! Don’t do that! I will research your energy and show you my findings, please don’t do that”. Gbenga chuckled and said “I’m just kidding man”.
Deji still didn’t look like he was relieved but he said “To train someone who doesn’t have aura the major factor is generating drive, a drive to live, a drive to succeed, a drive for love, any drive works and have the person train that drive to the point where he/she is able to do stupid things and risk his or her life for it with that the person would be able to generate aura…
Drive is abundant in competitive societies and so is sloth, I think the best method of improving drive would be to make the person to push beyond the person’s personal limits. How you will do this I don’t know but you can’t force the person, it has to be of the person’s free will, so whether one can learn aura or not depends on the person’s personality, you have to find people who are like anime protagonists, people who never give up even if giving up is the most logical decision.
For High Mind, the thing that awakens it is fear of death and the acceptance of death. The learner must overcome his survival instincts and be lord over it, in order words the best way to train it is with actual mortal danger or fake mortal danger that the student you’re teaching doesn’t doubt. It’s a hard one to train but when the person overcomes the fear then there would be no need for further training apart from improving the intelligence and sense stat.
And that’s all folks. See you at the Magic academy”
They were confused and Deji said “You’ll understand when you try to learn Magic” and gestured for them to leave the lab.

Rise of the Firstborn
[A participant in the Royal Road Writathon Challenge]As the inhibitor rises and the eternal flame is quenched, our lands shall be freed, and only then will the Princess be set to flee. It began with ice. A relentless, bone-chilling tickle of frost that stretched across the lands of Axulran, crawling over the mountain crests and freezing the grassy meadows. Frozen in time, the kingdom fought for political control all across the region of Ellixus, paying no mind to the death and torment they may cause along the way. Cateline Bennett, a princess consumed with ice, found herself lost in a foreign kingdom with nothing but her wits to survive. As she explores this unknown land, she unravels her past and discovers that the magic she had concealed for so long could unleash chaos so intense, it could destroy the world as she knew it. With her untapped magic and new friends, Cateline must vanquish the enemies that threatened the world of Denzethea as they knew it, else they, and all they knew, would crumble to ruin. NOTE: A review on this fiction has indicated that certain themes were traumatizing. While I believe this to be exagerated, I have added the appropriate tag for those who may be sensitive to those themes (fever dreams, delusions, and trials and tribulations).

The Laptop Hero (Portal/Isekai LitRPG)
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] - April 2022 Silas got summoned to another world—by a group of kids attending magic school who seemed rather unhappy with the results of their ritual. After a brief glimpse of his summoners Silas woke in the town dump. Unable to speak the local language, a misunderstanding escalated and before long Silas wound up in a jail cell, the locals having confiscated all his worldly possessions aside from his laptop, which had formed some strange bond with him. Now he can summon his laptop at will, and he can view his Status, level up, and gain powerful skills and magic as if he were some character in a video game, which is great and everything, but all Silas really wants to do is sit in a dark room and play games on his laptop. Only, life isn't a game, and Silas needs to get his act together because everyone else is playing for keeps. Or does he? Maybe for Silas life is just one big game now, with everyone else stuck playing by his rules. Assorted Disclaimers, in no particular order: I am only posting this on RoyalRoad.com, so if you find my story elsewhere it was not posted by me. Please do let me know! While I do consider this a progression fantasy, and have tagged it as such, Silas's Status improvements will not necessarily proceed in a linear fashion. His RPG stats will have ups and downs, exploits and nerfs, periods of growth and stagnation. Such is the life of a gamer, to be held under the thumb of the all powerful devs, or in this case a certain goddess devoted to the idea of Balance. SIlas himself should learn and grow, improving and progressing in areas where he struggles, or rather, to show such is my goal. The story is told from multiple points of view. While other PoVs will come and go, Silas shall remain the only lead character. The world Silas finds himself on is not a nice place. Expect him to encounter gore and traumatizing content and bad people who do bad things for selfish (or possibly noble) reasons from time to time. Some characters will use profanity, however due to cultural differences the curse words used will differ from those used in our corner of reality, so I'm not including the profanity content warning. Silas himself isn't one for foul language. No explicit sexual content here. This novel is intended for mature readers, however, and will include mature topics, including, but not limited to, sex, violence, death, and taxes. No harem. Might be an eventual romantic interest, possibly even some competitive jealousy, yet as his story begins Silas is too overwhelmed with other concerns to consider long term plans. Musophobics might want to steer clear of this story. Same goes for turophobics. You have been warned. Keep in mind, however, if my other disclaimers didn't make this clear, I only have the faintest of outlines at the moment. This story will take me where it will. My goal with this story is to write it to the end, something of a long-term writing exercise, with the hope others might take an interest in my work and encourage me to keep at it. I've started a number of works before, even finished a few, but this is the first time I've shared any work in a public forum. My temporary cover was made by me, in GIMP using public domain images. If you can do better I'll happily accept your submission and give credit for your work here!
