《Era: Dawn of the New Gods》Chapter 79: Magic Training Montage

During the months when Mira was trapped in the undead territory the world was moving forward, especially the sanctuary. Jola’s company fully invested their time and resources into the study of Magic.
Anita’s spell that could turn brain matter to energy crystals was studied and it was found that depending on the Rank and type of the monster or undead different crystals could be made.
The brains of monsters or undead with high intelligence created crystals that could store large amounts of energy, Rank 5 intelligent creatures like Geniuses could drain the a High Human with Low (high) energy 8 times before getting full. While the draining happened the energy zone of the person would get less saturated until the energy zone fully disappeared when the person was fully drained. Their crystals also absorbed energy very fast. The drawback was that it couldn’t output the stored energy quickly enough.
The crystals made from the brains of instinctual creatures, most high ranking undead, could store less energy but could absorb and output energy fast, in a sense they were balanced as they could store the whole energy of a person with Low (high) energy which wasn’t a bad amount.
The crystals from the brains of unintelligent creatures surprisingly enough could store a lot of energy very slowly. The output was high but the storing speed was so low.
The next step they took was to discover how to teach Magic. They would do the spells while Jola and Deji would observe the patterns the energy made. Jola was a superior sense High Human while Deji was a superior intelligence High Human so they were considered the best candidates for learning Magic.
The result was that Jola could sense the way the spells worked, the spells only worked when the Magic user moved their energy in certain complex patterns. Jola could sense the patterns but he could not recreate the spell. After noting the energy patterns of the spell of all the members, they realized that the complex patterns of the spells they used were made up of the 12 simple patterns that Deji’s spells made.

They were the basic patterns of Magic. Every spell they studied was made up of the 12 basic patterns, not one was ever missing. They then moved on to the next stage; recreating the spells. Deji was the one who was supposed to do this as he could already create the basic patterns.
They started with Kore’s spell as it was the simplest. Demola and Anita’s spells were the most complex with Teni’s spell being less complex than theirs and Jola’s spell being less complex than Teni’s.
Kore’s spell was easily recreated by Deji since he could easily make the basic patterns he could recreate Kore’s relatively simple spell. Deji still didn’t know what Kore’s spell did though so he couldn’t say for sure that he had gotten it right.
After he discovered the importance of his spell he decided to double down on Kore’s spell and find out what it did while at the same time trying to copy Jola’s spell. Deji found copying Jola’s spell extremely tasking, the spell complexity was on a whole different league than Kore’s spell.
Kore’s spell patterns were static while Jola’s spell patterns moved from place to place in an extremely complex pattern of patterns. Deji spent a week of trial and error before he got it right and another week before he could do it with a 100% success ratio, although it still took him a lot more time to do it than for Jola.
After weeks of studying Kore’s spell he found out it was a spell whose only purpose was to expend energy by sending it outside the energy zone hence reducing the users energy reserve quickly; it was a training spell for improving the amount of energy a person had.
Deji only discovered the purpose of the Kore’s spell when Funmi came to teach him her energy sight spell. She clearly saw what Kore’s spell did. It was at this point he prioritized learning Funmi’s spell and thanked her for sharing her insight.

Deji learnt the spell and quickly reaped the benefits; he could learn the spell of the others at a faster rate with it as he could directly see the spell of the other person and his own spell, although he had to maintain two spells at the same time it was not too tough for him once he got used to it. The final step was teaching someone who couldn’t do the basic patterns the basic patterns.
Demola was the candidate that was picked since he had more free time and his spell was one of the most complex. He was first taught how to do the basic patterns. Demola tried to learn following the advice and the description of Deji, it was very hard for him even though he could do spells instinctually and a complex one at that.
It was mostly because he didn’t have as much intelligence as Deji; the sanctuary learned that energy control proficiency depended on the intelligence stat. They didn’t know this before since they never had a reason to do complex things with their energy, it was mostly used for powering one’s body and weapons. After Demola learned the basic patterns he learnt the energy sight spell. The energy sight spell was just as complex as Teni’s spell so it was a long journey.
Magic was still hard to implement in combat as it took time for Deji, and even the Magicians and Geniuses, to cast powerful spells. Another bad part of Magic was the amount of energy it took to cast and run spells. Jola could only maintain his spell for 1 minute and 14 seconds before it ran out but this drawback could be countered with more energy stones, which had become a highly sought after resource.
Along with the energy cost for using weapon skills Magic seemed very unfeasible for combat except if there was a dedicated Magician who focused on improving his or her energy stat and intelligence above all else.
The worst part of Magic was the amount of time it took to learn. Demola had spent 3 months learning the basic patterns and the energy sight spell. He couldn’t instantly use the sight spell simultaneously while learning like Deji could, so he had to dedicate time to practice that and all that was just the basics.

For those of you who missed it, this is a Multiple Lead Characters story, hence the tag. I should also mention that this will get crunchy as far as numbers go and please pay attention to the Profanity tag.

How the Stars Turned Red
Announcement as of 05 July 2022: I've been diagnosed with some pretty severe nerve damage in my left arm, rendering me unable to write effectively, and as such this story is on hold until it is healed. I am so sorry, and I promise to get back to writing as soon as possible. In the latter half of the 3rd millennium CE, humanity has spread across the stars, inhabiting close to five-hundred worlds across the Orion Arm. Earth has become irrelevant, a historical has-been. The galactic map is dominated by two mega-factions, both controlling vast amounts of territories either through direct control or through their many allies and treaty signatories. The Kingdom of Aurora is the political and economic hegemon despite consisting of only seven inhabited worlds; their strength lies in the Royal Union, an interstellar commonwealth composing an internal market and a common defence pact. These member worlds are myriad and varied, culturally as well as politically, but they all flock to the same banner. The Independent Systems Alliance, spearheaded by the Republic of Elysium, is the ascendant challenger to Aurora and the Union. A pseudo-federal multi-system polity, the Alliance economy and military is rapidly expanding, but at the cost of effective democratic and meritocratic involvement by its people. However, with two superpowers as this, chafing along a common border, and with a constant clamour of polemics, both sides have become convinced the other is constantly preparing for war and are on the look-out for any perceived weakness in their opponent. The predictable result is a huge arms race and a cold war spreading across the stars, requiring only a spark to set the galaxy aflame. Drawn into this game of high stakes are ordinary men and women, their peaceful lives, hopes, and aspirations swallowed by the vortex of conflict and distrust. This is their story. Hush | on hold
"Your name?"When I stayed silent, he repeated himself. "Your name?""Jeyri." I let out quietly."And last name?""Rae...""Jeyri Rae..." He crouched down next to me and moved the hair from in front of my face, "I dislike when things get difficult, I end up doing things I'd much rather not do. Do you want to know what happened to the last person who made things difficult for me, hmm?" He asked, leaning into me. Is he talking about me calling the cops? He pressed his gun against my head and frowned, "You get it don't you?"I nodded quickly. "Good... And if you tell anyone what you saw today, I'll know." He pressed his finger against my lips and smiled, "So hush."
