《The World Inside a Dream》Chapter 28

"You're back!" Luna exclaimed.
"Not for long," Lucius said while he took a seat. "You guys didn't get me a lunch, so I came for one. Plus, I have a few questions."
Lucius grabbed a few of his strawberries and ate them like an apple. "I've heard that there was something called an Item Box. What exactly is it?"
"Well," Balos started. "It's a storage only you can use. It bonds to you and it is with you anywhere. The better version of a box you have, the bigger it is. And you can bond up to three to you, but you can't unbind them once you are bonded."
That's really cool, Lucius thought. "So how can I get one?"
"Well," Balos thought. "The easiest way is to purchase it, but they are quite the pretty penny. And we are definitely not able to just toss around funds. Making one is also an option, but..." Balos shook his head. "The things it needs are insanely hard to get. For one that will give you a decent amount of space, you need the hide of a Rank B monster, the blood of a Rank A monster, a Diamond Bone from a Draconite, and a Crystal of your choice. The Crystal will determine the ability of your box and it can give it various effects."
"How do you know all of this stuff?" Luna interjected. "It sounds like you have no end to your knowledge."
"Well, back when I was younger, I did travel quite a lot. It is also hard for me to forget information I've already learned." Balos said while sounding pleased.
"Anyway," Lucius started. "We have the hide of a Rank B monster, getting the blood of a Rank A doesn't seem that hard to get, but how do we get a Diamond Bone? What exactly are Draconite?"
"My despicable cousins," Luna grumbled. "They are these big ol' lizards that are spew fire. They fly around so, unmajestically, and can barely make out us Dragon-kin."
So, apparently, the things that we would call dragons are actually called Draconite here. That's cool, but...

"How do we get a Diamond Bone?" Lucius asked.
"Every single bone in a Draconite is made out of enchanted diamonds, so it is near impossible to get. They are stronger than normal diamonds and are extremely valuable," Luna explained.
Lucius became disheartened. "Aw, man. I wanted one, but as I am now, I don't think I can."
"If we can get money, we can get you one. But as of now, just focus on learning. That'll be more beneficial to you," Balos said.
"Alright," Lucius said. "By the way, can you turn this into a Transportation Gem to get me back to the school?"
Balos sighed. "I thought I told you to get a return orb to get back here from the school."
Oh yeah. Oops... "Sorry, I forgot," Lucius managed a small laugh.
Balos sighed again. Lucius handed him a Transportation Gem, which Balos quickly routed it. Handing it back to him, he said, "Come back anytime. But next time, get a Transportation Gem routed before you come here."
"Yes, sir," Lucius said and threw the gem at his feet. In a moment, he was back at the school. Looking back at his schedule, he found that he had monster taming class.
This is going to be really interesting. Even if I don't have any magic power, I should be able to tame a monster, unless it needs me to have magic to do so... Lucius thought as he headed there.
To his surprise, the directory led him into an outdoor field that was next to a forest. I hope I'm in the right place, Lucius thought. There already were a number of people that were waiting around.
"Lucius!" A familiar voice called out. It was Cohren. "How ya doin', man?"
"Pretty good. This is the monster taming class, right?" Lucius asked.
"Yup, it is!" Cohren confirmed.
Good, Lucius thought.
"Are you good with the sword?" Cohren asked.
"I'm okay, but I could be better," Lucius replied. The last time Lucius practiced with his sword, his attacks were quite swift, but nowhere near Balos' skill.

"I don't use any weapons other than my hands," Cohren said. "I don't need a staff to use magic, which is pretty neat if you ask me."
Soon, the teacher came.
"Hello future monster tamers!" She said. "I am Eliza Tolson, your monster taming teacher. You may just call me Ms. T, if you want. I will teach you all of the basics of what you need to tame monsters that come across your path, so you may use them as companions!"
That sounded extremely cliché, Lucius thought. Might as well play the theme song to Pokémon while you're at it.
"Today, we have an extended period, so we have time to do what I planned," Ms. Tolson said. "You will be going into the forest to find a monster, and maybe even tame it!"
Why so much on the first day? Lucius sighed.
"In order to tame a monster, you must be able to subdue it," Ms. Tolson said. "We have a wide variety of beasts in this forest, so it should not be hard to find a monster for you to get. Once you weaken it, you have to pour magic into it. That will make it so it will be unable to refuse your commands."
Guess I can't do it...? Lucius thought. I can't pour magic in it if I don’t even have magic power of my own. But, man, this is looking more like Pokémon every second.
"It may sound simple, but once you get into the combat, it is a lot harder than you think. The contract that you signed when you registered doesn't hold you accountable for your own deaths. If you die, it is not the schools fault."
"Now, on a happier note, get out there and start taming!" Ms. Tolson said energetically. The class broke and dispersed into the forest.
Lucius went into a direction of the forest that practically no one went to. Lucius didn't know why, but he felt compelled to look there.
Well, since I'm here, might as well try out some hunting, Lucius thought. He crept through the forest and kept his senses alert.
The only sounds were the shuffling of Lucius' feet. Five minutes passed, yet Lucius hasn't encountered a single beast.
Maybe they don't live in this part of the forest, Lucius speculated. Maybe that’s why no one came in this part.
Just as he was about to go back to where he started, he heard a loud crash in the forest.
Leggo, Lucius thought and headed in the direction of the sound. He crept along the brush and peeked to see what was going on.
Two beasts were fighting. One looked to be a pure white rabbit with wings, and the other resembled a hawk. The rabbit was severely battered; its wings were battered, and its coat was stained red with blood.
Lucius rested his hand on his katana. He pressed one of the buttons to unhinge the blades.
As the hawk came in for the finishing blow, Lucius swung the katana and the katana went between the hawk. The hawk squawked and backed off, seeing that it wouldn't be able to kill Lucius. It flew off.
The rabbit looked at Lucius with grateful eyes that glinted with intelligence.
It would be so cool if I could tame it, but unfortunately, I can't, Lucius thought and sighed.
"Sorry, but I can't do much for you right now," Lucius said to it and turned around.
He began to walk away when there was a small squeak behind him. He turned.
The rabbit was quivering a little bit, so Lucius went over and kneeled. But, to his surprise, it mustered up the strength to hop into his arms. It burrowed itself into Lucius' chest and lay there.
It seems like it likes me... does that mean that I can tame it without actually using magic? Lucius thought in awe. Then he looked at the rabbit and his bloodstained shirt. Whatever. Top priority is to get this healed!
Lucius sprinted back to the open field.

An Unwavering Craftsman
Given the hereditary nature of classes, everyone expects Damien—the child of two high-tiered adventurers—to be granted a high-tier combat class of his own. Expectations are betrayed, however, when Damien finds himself instead saddled with a crafting class of the lowest possible tier: [Neophyte Tailor]. Left practically crippled compared to those with better classes, Damien wants to avoid becoming a pawn in the machinations of the nobility, desiring only to grind his level in peace while wondering why the usual rules of inheritance were broken. Was it his desire to excel by his own effort, rather than an unearned blessing from a god? Did the Five take offence at his opinions on the unfairness of hereditary classes? Or maybe it was something to do with the alien voice that intruded on his ceremony? A voice that offers great power, and freedom from the tyranny of the Five, but that never names its price. This story is litRPG-lite. While the class someone possesses controls most of their lives, people don't get dinged at for every level they gain, nor can they see their status without undergoing a special ritual. The MC has no romantic interest. Crafting is merely a way to game the system, and doesn't feature heavily in the story, aside from a few descriptions on how they're carrying out the system abuse. There is, on one unfortunate occasion, maths. The pace is quick. This was a participant in the Spring 2022 writathon. (i.e. it was posted as-written at high speed. I may give it another editing pass in the future.)
