The head elder stood there blankly. Akane's pupils were trembling in a mix of fear and shock.

"Haha... hahahaha... hahahahahaha!"

The demon stood there silent before laughing.

"Finally, that annoying pest is gone! A demon such as myself has to struggle with a mere human with borrowed power, it's laughable!"

It seems I've recovered enough mana to do my original plan but...

The demon's eyes darted over to the patriarch's mansion and at a certain figure that was tied up in chains.

As expected of the son of a high-ranking demon, if he fully unlocks his power then I'd be wiped out instantly. Fortunately, the rumors about the seal were true. Right now, he's not a threat no matter what he does. But it's better to be safe than sorry, I'll regain some more of this body's mana. Fortunately, it seems that this body is potent in recovering mana and wounds.

The head elder finally snapped out of it and carried Akane back to the mansion.

The demon simply let them go. Kai was enough trouble for him. Once the head elder and Akane had entered the patriarch's mansion, the demon created a wall of flames around it. It was to prevent anyone from escaping while he recovers.

All that the demon has taken from Kai was his body, but his soul and mind techniques weren't taken. Those were part of Kai but not his body. He wouldn't be able to use [Soul Call] and trying to find someone in a place as large as this was quite a pain.

The demon didn't leave the area and stayed only fifty or so meters away from the wall of flame. This flame wasn't strong enough that it would be immune to magic because the consumption of a flame as strong as that wouldn't be a joke for the demon who has only recovered enough mana to destroy a mansion.

The flame was about ten or so meters high, it served as a warning rather than a prevention. If anyone tried to break free, he'd immediately deal with them. He couldn't afford to take his focus off of Kai right now. Kai was able to take control of his body for a few seconds, if the demon didn't take control back in time, they'd both lose the body.

It was apparent that Kai had resolved himself to die to protect his family and friends.

Outside the Kuroshi Clan

"...Madam was right, this place is on the brink of extinction."

There were two hundred or so knights there riding horses. They all wore this kingdom's crest, a lion's head facing forward on a red background. They were knights of this kingdom, their magic power wasn't anything extraordinary, at average they were D-class. But their bodies were at least C-class and B-class at average.

They were all fully equipped in the standard medieval knight armor. Most of them used shields attached to their one arm and a sword on the other arm but there were also ones who used a rectangle shield and spear.

"Sir! We've confirmed the situation with the scouts. Any place other than the front gate is guarded by demonic beasts. Also, there appears to be a wall of flame around the only place the people are being held. There are roads filled with blood and bodies from the gate to the mansion itself."

These knights were on their way back from a mission but when they encountered Erina's carriage, she used her authority to make them go here. The knights had sufficient rest and decided to depart immediately but she told them that the place might already be destroyed.

"Madam told us to prioritize saving people instead of fighting the cause of this which she said was someone being possessed by a demon of at least second stage. But this amount of destruction... I'd say it's a third stage demon."

The knight in front who seemed to be the leader of this unit turned his horse around to face his men.

"Men, our objective is to rescue the residents! Slaying the one possessed by a demon is secondary but if needed or if we're able to, kill him!"

The man in front removed his sword from his sheath and raised it.

"Long live the king!"

The man in front faced his sword and horse towards the gate and roared.

"Charge!"

His horse galloped forward along with all the knights behind him.

Along the way, they saw corpses destroyed and bodies with unrecognizable features. Blood was splattered everywhere, it can only be called a massacre. There were many bodies without heads and vice versa.

It was a very gruesome scene. Though they were knights, a scene like this rarely happened. If they were asked when was the last time they saw something like this, none of them would answer that they had. Hundreds upon hundreds of dead bodies scattered around, houses destroyed.

Many of them had to remove their helmet to puke but none of them dared step on the floor filled with blood. The morale of the men lowered by the second but what pushed them forward is that there were still many more that would be killed if they didn't help.

Their magic power wasn't a threat to the demon but two hundred B-class bodies wasn't a joke. The demon would have to expend quite a bit of his mana to actually kill a tenth of them. No doubt that the mana deficient demon would lose if he were to face all of these knights now.

Duke Mariko's Carriage

If only I had noticed that Reo wasn't with him, I could've at least not lure him towards the clan! I would sneak away and warn the kingdom through a letter but instead I led the demon right to the nest.

"I already allowed you to do as you please to order the knights to head for the village but that's all I'm allowing. You will follow me silently and obediently."

It was evident to the duke that Erina would jump out of the carriage and even run all the way to the clan if she had to. Her friends' lives were in danger.

If Kai knows what he did, he might...

Erina clenched her fist. The words of the duke did not register in her mind.

Right now, if Erina were to leave the carriage, she'd undoubtedly be frozen before she even realizes it. And even if she doesn't get frozen immediately, it would be unlikely that she could escape. The duke would probably use his three attributes to stop her, and if that happens, she has no chance.

The duke of Mariko Palace, Hyosuke was one of the strongest in the entire kingdom, only matched by the royal guard and royal family.

His influence on the kingdom was also immense, as long as it doesn't impede the royal family, he can do almost anything with only a few limitations.

Ever since birth, Erina had searched for ways to use the influence of her father to search for Kai but she had to stop when her father started treating her coldly. Until now, nobody knew of the reason but Erina had her suspicions.

Ever since she had awoken in the carriage, she had only thought of ways and tried to find opportunities to get away but the duke could capture her no matter what scenario she thought of. The closest opportunity she had was when the knights had crossed paths with them. She could've taken a horse but the knight would have to go down the horse first and that would lower her chances to escape because the duke could capture her while she was boarding it.

"What do you know about that boy?"

Erina looked up.

"What do you mean?"

Even if by speech, she wanted to show her disagreement, she stopped speaking politely and her tone made it evident that she didn't want to talk to him.

"You see, three months ago during the attack on the mansion, that boy..."

The duke removed his white gloves and raised his left hand.

"This hand had a second-degree burn on that day. He managed to destroy my defense with a single punch of golden flames. Frankly, if he could use that all the time then I'd have no chance. That attack was so strong that it had at least the power of A-class. If I had used my whole power then I may have defended against it but two strikes and I'd be out. If he were to grow more then I have no guarantee that I'd win."

Erina's eyes widened.

Impossible! Even borrowing that power, I haven't even managed to make a scratch but if Kai really did give him a second-degree burn, that means that the clan and knights won't stand a chance! If a demon possesses someone, their limiters are removed! If Kai had lost that seal, then...

Erina tried to open the door but her hand was frozen.

"Like I said, I won't let you go. If that attack could only happen once, then the knights and the power I left behind are enough to deal with him. But if I'm wrong and he can produce that much power naturally, those knights and that clan will fall."

Erina glared at the duke while the duke did a 'hmph' and turned his head to the side.

Kuroshi Clan

"Sir, we've confirmed from the scouts that the demon is only a kilometer away!

The knight in front nodded at the report and turned his horse sideways to talk to his men.

"Men, the demon is near. We will proceed on foot starting from half a kilometer to avoid alerting it!"

But...

"Hmm? Looks like some pests have snuck in."

They underestimated Kai's body. If Kai was the one controlling the body, he would be able to sense them from the moment they were a fourth of the way to the mansion with his [Soul Call]. But the demon only relied on Kai's body's natural sense and his own improvement with magic.

This clan had the largest land compared to other clans but since Mikado was only E-class three years ago, they were looked down upon by a lot. The knights knew of this fact but didn't know that Mikado and the others had improved.

Mikado had not made it public that they had grown stronger. Hyosuke, Erina, and Yasuo were the only outsiders that knew of this fact.

If the knights knew that even a B-class Mikado was killed, they'd certainly try to get help from the kingdom before going here. Their unit of knights had power equal to that of a B-class. But only their bodies were strong, they weren't proficient with magic.

A demon can use techniques that not even the original body had.

"New prey..."

The demon had a smirk on his face.

The scouts arrived first.

"Sir, the demon seems to be missing from his previous spot."

"Find him and fast. If the unit is ambushed, we'll probably lose at least half before subjugating it. But if we were to encounter it in a surprise attack, maybe we can do this without a single casualty."

"That's right, you should find it quickly."

"Yes."

The two of them turned stiff. A third voice had intruded behind them.

"Gah."

One of them vomited out blood, there was a huge hole in his chest and a hand was through it.

The one who seemed to be in charge of the scouts was frozen in fear. Any of the scouts are weaker than the average knight, they improved their stealth and information gathering skills, they weren't assassins. At most, the leader of the scouts has a body that can barely be called C-class.

"Thanks for the information, now join your comrades in the afterlife."

The leader of the scouts turned around and saw the dead bodies of his comrades, some were missing heads, some had their chests open, some who were lucky had their bodies intact. But that wasn't what the most frightening was. He managed to sneak up on people specialized in that area. Not only that, he killed them all without a sound and managed to sneak up on even the strongest one.

"You may all be specialized in sneaking up on people but you can't defeat someone who can use your shadows."

As he said that, the demon's figure became a silhouette with an evil smile and eyes in the eyes of the leader. He was trembling in fear.

He tried to scream but words wouldn't come out.

Monster.

That was the last thought of the scout as he died.

Approximately four days ago

Many people-no, beings were clashing with each other. One side had demons with varying colors and horns and the other side had human-like figures and had different colored clothes.

The only sounds were the roars of both sides. A giant clear iceberg sprouted from the floor and killed hundreds of the demons. The second stage demons were killed one after another.

Then, dark flames melted the iceberg but it quickly regenerated. The flames grew fiercer until it started to even involve the demons.

"It looks like we meet again, Goddess of Frost."

"Yeah, Demon of Hell Flame."

The second stage and third stage demons began retreating at a rapid pace. Right now, it was a battle between a Goddess and a highest level demon, there was no room for weaker beings.

The Goddess of Frost waved her arm somewhat elegantly but with that simple movement, a giant wall of clear ice formed in front of her, it was so cold that the surroundings were being covered in ice with just the cold air.

The Demon of Hell Flame snorted and waved his arm as well. With that, a wave of dark flame spread from his arm towards the wall, it spread and spread as it landed. But the wall stood tall even under the burning power of the flames.

"As expected of the Eternal Frost. Even my Hell Flame has trouble burning it."

A soul-like entity travelled at a rapid pace towards the side of the Demon of Hell Flame.

"General, it appears that this was only a diversion. Their true force is headed for the left side!"

"I see, you all support that side. I will take care of this Goddess myself."

The Goddess of Frost jumped from her position and slid down a slide made of clear ice. She raised her palm towards the soul-like demon and in an instant, the soul-like demon got frozen. There was no cold air or casting, the demon was instantly frozen even without a physical body.

"Amazing as always."

The Demon of Hell Flame was calm and vanished from his spot. He appeared right below the slide and his cheeks expanded. A breath of dark flame spread out from his mouth towards the Goddess. The Goddess crossed her arms in front of her and a shield of clear ice floated in front of her. The flames spread out from the side of the shield but the Goddess was safe.

The Demon of Hell Flame made an axe kick and a flame wave rose up with it. At the same time, the Goddess froze the Demon of Hell Flame's other foot.

"Futile!"

The Demon of Hell Flame's frozen foot suddenly burst into flames and the Goddess of Frost's shield broke into pieces.

But in an instant, the Goddess used the cold air and gathered it to disperse the flames by separating her arms that were crossed.

At that moment, the Goddess of Frost and the Demon of Hell Flame had no magic activated and were about to clash directly.

"I've already learned from last time that I can't match your Eternal Frost at close range, that's why..."

The Demon of Hell Flame's foot that was frozen stepped forward and created a burst of fire to launch him. The Goddess of Frost stretched out her hand to grab him with a giant hand of ice but it proved futile as the Demon of Hell Flame used the hand for another boost.

The soul-like demon only had a fourth of his being frozen left before the Demon of Hell Flame snapped his fingers and the soul-like demon disappeared along with the frozen bottom.

A second after that, a giant iceberg rose from the previous position of the soul-like demon.

"As I thought, you were planning to do that."

The Demon of Hell Flame roared and flames burst from his body. This amount of flame couldn't compared to before and the wall and iceberg were melted only after a few seconds. But accompanying that, the Goddess of Frost created a giant sword of ice and slashed down.

The Demon of Hell Flame created a sword of flame and slashed upwards.

Three days later, Darkwood Forest

This damn Eternal Frost has just been taken care of but my life force and mana have all but dried up trying to remove it. I've been transferred to a random place in emergency but I'm basically dead. The Eternal Frost was more than enough to drain my life. The general managed to burn most of it but a Goddess is still a frightening existence...

The soul-like entity was fading in and out of existence. At this stage, the demons are the most vulnerable but their power is many times compared to the previous stage. You could say that it's all attack and no defense but they are immune to any and all physical attacks. Only magical attacks and soul attacks would work against this stage of demons.

But the overwhelming majority of races that use magic over physical is immense, that's why at this stage, demons aren't required to participate in fights and are protected by the other stages.

Just as the demon was close to losing consciousness, hope appeared. Hope to live through his current predicament.

A dying boy had just staggered his way to the place he rested at and fainted. A demon at the fourth stage is able to possess almost any being that's weaker than them but a boy has a body too weak to be able to hold him. Even if he suppressed his power to the utmost limits, he would still end up destroying that boy's body and himself.

But the dying boy in front of him was different, the boy had a strong body and an even stronger magic power. The demon was also dying and had little to no magic power at all. Right now, he could possess the boy but the chance of success is less than ten percent.

If the boy was in perfect condition, he wouldn't be able to possess him but a dying body along with a stressed mind, it's basically child's play to possess that.

The demon inched closer to the boy and used the last of his magic to manipulate the boy's sleeping self. The demon temporarily sealed the tumor and in that instant, turned into smoke and went into the orifices of the boy's face. The boy's body trembled as if having a seizure and in the end, the boy's magic power went rampant. A huge explosion occurred.

But in the instant that the boy's magic power was used, the demon successfully took over the boy's body.

It was a fortunate event for the demon as if the heavens didn't want him to die. But for the boy, it was equal to killing him.

At that moment, Kai's body was taken over and his mind was put to sleep. The demon opened his eyes in the boy's body and was met with the sight of a girl.

"Kai?"

Erina muttered Kai's name while the demon was still fixing the body's processes.

"Enemy."

Unconsciously, the demon muttered.

Both of them engaged in combat but Kai's tattered body with no mana wasn't enough to fight Erina who had only used her mana to search for Kai.

In the end, Kai's body which had no mana couldn't keep up with Erina's attacks and the demon had to give Kai a bit of his consciousness to fool Erina. It was only for a bit before the demon took control once more. He studied Kai's manners and the name of Erina.

During their travel towards the clan, the demon had gained bits and pieces of information from Kai's mind. Normally, taking over a person requires preparation. But the demon had done it in a hurry to save himself, his possession was incomplete.

But even so, he's a fourth stage demon. Even if his possession was incomplete, he still had ways to fix it. But even if he had successfully secured a body, he was still dying, he had only prolonged his life. He needed to use the essence from humans. That's why he immediately began an attack the next day after he had arrived in the Kuroshi Clan.

With each second, he grows stronger and more knowledgeable about Kai's body. Instead of weakening by the second, it's the opposite. That's why out of the two hundred or so knights that had entered the clan, none had survived.

The patriarch's mansion had also fallen. The amount of people alive in the clan could be counted on all toes and fingers.

Kai had no more will to resist, he was only begging the demon to spare his family. Kai's left eye had already been destroyed along with his left arm. Kai's left leg was also damaged but fortunately, it was still intact.

The reason for that was Kai had been trying to take over his body and ended up straining it. Kai's left eye was gone, his left leg broken and unlikely to recover or be usable and his left arm was cut off by the deceased Mikado.

His right side is the only thing that's left intact.

"Ha! Human, you were resisting me with all your might before to the extent of even killing your own body but to think that you had already fallen this low."

In front of the demon was Akane, Juro, Akemi, Yoko, Emi, and some of the leftover soldiers. Juro was bleeding all over and in front of everyone else. Akemi gave Emi to Yoko and Akane was protecting Yoko. The knights were behind them, all unconscious and some were even dying from blood loss.

Needless to say, the demon was successful in destroying the Kuroshi Clan. The surroundings were on fire and the sky had already become dark. Even the gates that had spared some buildings or the residential area, they were all burned down and destroyed. If this clan were to be left like this, it would take more money than building it from scratch.

Please...!

Kai's voice was trembling. In his past life, Kai hadn't experienced even the minimum amount of parental love. They mostly ignored him and focused on his talented big brother. He was bullied in school and avoided by everyone because of that. The amount of friends he had could be counted on one hand but even those friends had only had the bare minimal contact with him.

Living in isolation in his past life, he wanted to change. And while he was thinking that, he encountered Erina who was being cornered by thugs and retired from that life. He was born to loving parents and faithful friends, he also encountered a spirit and a mentor that helped him become who he was today.

The demon aimed his eyes at Yoko and Emi but Juro and Akemi finally reacted and was about to attack him. But Akane held the sword with her hands and stopped the demon from retracting it.

"Fool, you really think a mere child can stop me?"

The demon raised his leg and kicked Akane who was forced to let go of the sword. The demon immediately swung it at Yoko and Emi.

Juro had the quickest reaction and took the damage from the sword.

"Crap!"

The demon cursed out loud. The Demon of Hell Flame's son, what would happen to him if he finds out?

All of Juro's wounds were enough to make him unconscious and not enough to kill him. But this strike had enough power behind it to hack through two people. Juro's body took it all and got a fatal wound.

No choice.

The demon used his power to disappear once more and appeared next to Yoko. But Akemi and Juro predicted that, they appeared right next to the demon who had thrusted his sword forward.

A sword pierced through both Juro and Akemi.

"Yoko... take care of Emi and Akane...!"

Akemi who was behind Juro said this and the three lost consciousness. Immediately after that, blood spurted out of Akemi's mouth.

"Kai, I know you're in there. Please don't blame yourself over this."

Contrary to how they look, they were quite calm and collected.

"That's right, Kai... It wasn't your fault, okay?"

Mom, dad...

Kai was crying with his one eye, he had taken control of his body once more. The fear of stabbing through Akemi and Juro sent the demon into a panic and made his will falter. Now, the Goddess of Frost and the Demon of Hell Flame definitely won't forgive him.

"Mom... dad, please don't leave me...!"

Kai was crying.

"Don't make such a pitiful face, that's not the Kai we know."

Juro smiled with blood leaking from the corner of his mouth and held Kai's face.

"That's right, Kai. This isn't your fault, that's why you have to live."

Akemi could tell at a glance what that look on Kai's face was. He would probably kill himself if he was left alone.

"Kai, things may become rough for you starting now but remember, don't kill yourself over this. You need to live your life, don't care about us-"

Blood spurted out of Juro's mouth which splattered on Kai's clothes.

"Like hell I'm giving you up!"

Kai pulled out the sword carefully and placed his hand on Juro who was the nearest.

"[Heal], [Heal], [Heal], [Heal], [Heal], [Heal], [Heal], [Heal], [Heal]!"

Kai used a lot of mana and concentration to heal Juro but it only served to lengthen his life. Kai placed his hand on Akemi and did the same heal multiple times but...

"Kai, it's no use. Our hearts have already been pierced through, we would already be dead by now but the sturdy demon and divine body just made us live longer."

Akemi was quite calm but her face was pale white, it was evident that she was at the border between life and death. Juro was even worse and his eyes were staring fixedly at the sky.

"Looks like... you've suffered quite a bit... you can't even cry with this eye anymore..."

Akemi's voice was fading as she rubbed the side of Kai's eye which had been destroyed.

Juro placed his hand on Kai's shoulders.

"Kai, remember... you're a man. You may have to... face the hate and rejection of many starting now but stand tall... you may think that you've been acting quite selfish by leaving us to train but... the only reason you tried to become stronger was to protect those around you... so, don't cry..."

Juro and Akemi looked at each other and nodded.

"Kai, this'll hurt a bit but bear with it."

Akemi and Juro placed their hands on his head.

Kai felt his brain pulse and something was just pulled out of him.

"Gah!"

The soul-like demon was pushed out and he wasn't fading anymore, his existence was clear but he was trembling in fear.

Kai turned around and an aura of anger was emitting from him. He was so angry that his attributes were going out of control and a flame was burning from his body. It was the golden [Empyrean Flames].

"Kai, don't..."

Akemi tried to hold onto Kai but the flames stopped her.

"Kai, your tumor...!"

Juro also wanted to stop him but they didn't have any power to stop Kai.

Kai faced the demon with a burning aura.

"Damn you, human! Because of you, I'm already a dead man! I'll take you all with me!"

The demon unleashed his power that he took from Kai and the clan. It was about half more than the power Kai was showing.

But Kai didn't care.

Kai used the [Empyrean Flames] to launch from his position and kicked diagonally with the golden flames accompanying him.

Physical attacks may not work on the demon but Kai's attacks were mixed with flames.

The demon coated his arm in darkness and blocked the flames. Because he was removed from Kai's body, he can't use the elements that he could previously use.

His aura and power surged so fast that it quickly overshadowed the demon's. But Kai's mana was lasting on embers and his body was being destroyed by the second, before he would've only collapsed from mana deficiency but now if he collapses and doesn't receive proper medical treatment, he'd die. The only thing keeping Kai conscious right now is his rage and adrenaline, no words would get through him now.

Just by breaking the limiter on his brain, Kai's bones creak and his skin feels like it's breaking apart. But Kai created a technique during that year, the classic limit break which doubles the user's power but unlike those heroes in stories where limit breaks would increase the power for a few minutes before leaving them powerless, this technique lasts as long as Kai wants. If his body can't take it, he'd die. If his body can take it, he can gain an unlimited boost. High risk high return.

And in the instant he raised his power, many things occurred in the continent.

"This is..."

A man who looked to be in his forties and wore heavy knight armor save for the helmet looked at a certain direction.

"This power is... S-class? But the mana doesn't seem to be from any of the others..."

Another man wearing a violet suit and a top hat holding a cane stopped his steps and also looked at a direction silently.

The Goddess of Frost also looked at that direction for an instant but continued clashing with the Demon of Hell Flame, their battle travelled all the way to the human continent. Their clash was originally in a different realm but they both felt something important happening in the human realm and decided to continue their brawl there.

Oi oi oi...

The demon was trembling as he looked at Kai. Right now for him, Kai was the one who looked like a demon. The aura of his that mixed several elements and the demon even heard bones cracking, Kai's expression was the scariest it's ever been.

Before, the clan had only kidnapped Akane but this time, his parents were on the verge of death and his anger spiked to levels that last time couldn't even be compared. Right now, Kai was only thinking of words like kill, destroy, annihilate, obliterate, and murder. His sense of reason had already been blown out of the building.

"Die."

Kai punched with a fist coated in golden flames, darkness, and light. It was a scene that nobody would believe if they didn't see it.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM

One punch is all it took for the demon to be erased and the attack even broke the wall to the clan and through the forest.

But that one punch also took everything out of Kai. This time, the tumor was even worse than before and his entire left body from neck to foot was covered in it and it was even beginning to spread on his face.

From Kai's attack, nothing was left in a cone all the way to the forest. The buildings, the road, the wall, the trees, nothing.

Kai fell down on the floor and crawled towards Akemi and Juro.

"Hey, mom, dad... I defeated him so you can wake up now, can't you?"

Kai stopped in the middle of the two of them.

"Hey..."

Kai's body had trails of blood all the way from his previous position.

"He's gone so it's alright to wake up now... right?"

Kai's voice was trembling and tears were falling from his eyes. His body's was a kid's but his mind isn't, the shock of losing them only made him act like his true age but he knew the truth.

"Damn it... damn it... damn it...!"

If only I was strong enough, if only I wasn't reckless, this wouldn't have happened!

Kai punched the floor repeatedly until his hand bled.

"I want to die."

But just as Kai contemplated biting off his own tongue, he remembered his parent's words and more tears fell down his eyes.

"I guess I can't take the easy way... huh?"

Just before Kai lost consciousness and was about to descend in permanent sleep, someone appeared in front of him, the woman had a pained face.

"I'm sorry I'm late, Akemi and Kai..."

The woman crouched down and said this to Akemi and Kai. She rubbed Akemi's hair and rubbed the side of her face which had tear stains.

Then she looked at Kai and pity was evident in her face.

"I'm sorry, I can't even protect my own daughter and I even let my grandson suffer this much..."

She held Kai's face and a tear dropped from her eye but she quickly wiped it.

"I'll take you away now, you don't have to experience this pain anymore."

She looked away for a bit as another tear dropped and that was the last thing I saw.
