《Rebirth: Monarchs》Chapter 18: Runes

Kai had adjusted to his newfound strength and used various exercises to test out his body. His current body was faster, stronger, and tougher than anyone in his clan, he was sure of that. But his magic was only at F-class, third step.
"Reo."
"You want to ask if you can improve your magic power first?"
"Nn..."
Kai was a bit startled when Reo had predicted his thoughts but still nodded his consent.
"We've been improving my body so that it can withstand the power of your spirit magic but I don't think that I should depend on it."
"The truth is, you need an A-rank body at the very least to withstand my spirit magic. You're very gifted in improving your body and you gain magic from your surroundings a lot faster than the others. Right now, your body is at least a C-class, but unfortunately you can't bring out its true power. Heavy gravity will improve your body but your body will need time to adapt to normal gravity once more, though I'm sure that when your body finally adapts; your speed, power, and toughness will increase immensely and you'll jump to B-class."
"Isn't that a bit too easy?"
"Not really, there are classes above SSS for bodies."
"So you can attain higher than magic?"
"Magic also has realm higher than bodies but after S-class, it gets significantly harder to improve your body."
"Human limitations?"
"Exactly. There are rarely any bodily practitioners above S-class, I'm sure that there are no SS-class bodies in this continent."
This world was about a fifth larger than Earth, but because the world did not have enough improvement in science; Kai had only roughly guessed the size from other's words. Five continents on a world which is a fifth larger than Earth, how large would those continents actually be?
"I've heard of this before but this is truly the weakest continent, isn't it?"
"Yes, the angel and demon continent stand above the human continents but this continent; the Soaring Eagle continent is definitely the weakest."
"I see."
Kai sighed, he had a long way to go.
"Well, let's start learning on how to create Enchanted Gear, I would normally just make one but I don't have a spirit body as of yet."
"Hahaha..."
Kai made a dry laugh.
"We'll start with the lessons now."
"Lessons...?"
"Of course, what did you expect? We can't just begin creating them right off the bat. Enchanted Gear requires runes to be created. So now, we'll learn about runes. I think that you will successfully create your first weapon in nine months. Lessons for nine months and three months for creating the weapon. Considering the lack of materials in this forest, at least this much time is needed. Although, it should normally take ten years of lessons and three years of putting it into practice; I think this should be enough for you. Besides... you want to get it done as fast as possible, don't you?"

"Nn."
Kai nodded and smiled at Reo's consideration.
"Alright, let's start!"
"Let's begin then."
A chair and desk crafted out of darkness appeared out of thin air.
"You have to teach me this sometimes..."
"Maybe when you can hold my spirit magic in your body for five minutes."
"Eeeehhh?"
Right now, Kai could only hold the overwhelming power of Reo's spirit magic in his body for fifteen seconds; he still had a very long way to go.
Reo began the lesson about runes using floating lines in the air.
"Runes are dead ancient languages, their true origin is unknown but according to studies; it appears they were only gifted to humans by Gods. Humans abused the use of runes and were punished by the Gods- no, more like the beings that gave them the runes. Gods are beings that can't be touched by mortals but can certainly be killed. The beings that gave humans these languages are beings even higher than the Gods. These are the so-called Supreme Beings; the reason that a Supreme Being level talent is so terrifying is because they are stronger than even Gods. I suppose you could also call them the God of Gods; I even heard about a Supreme Being that reincarnates people, he's so strong that he can manipulate the lives and souls of others."
Kai was struck speechless when he heard that, his talent was on the same level as that omnipotent being?
"Supreme Beings have infinite longevity, they can also be called immortals. Immortality is different from indestructibility, but there is only one being even higher than a Supreme Being, that being is called the Monarch. They were originally a Supreme Being but their level of power was so immeasureable that they were dubbed the Monarch of all Supreme Beings."
"We've gotten off-track."
Reo gave a dry cough to switch the topic.
"As I've said before, humans were punished by the being that gave them these languages. Runes are a set of dead languages crafted into one. Although they can't be recited because of the punishment, they can still be written; they were found in ancient records and crafted to create the very first Enchanted Gear, although now they're called Ancient Gear. An Ancient Gear has significantly more power than Enchanted Gear, if you say an Enchanted Gear can make a human's power strengthen multiple times; an Ancient Gear is so strong that it multiplies even the power of an Enchanted Gear. They're mostly given names by their first owners."

"What does naming them do?"
"It unleashes the power of the gear. Whether it's an Enchanted Gear or an Ancient Gear, knowing their true name unleashes their true potential."
"Names... I see..."
"I'll now teach you the entire set of runes."
"How much are there actually?"
"A little over ten thousand?"
"..."
"..."
"..."
"..."
"...oi."
"What?"
"How do you expect me to learn over ten thousand characters in nine months?"
"Hardwork?"
"Hardwork, my ass!"
"Just like what you did with the gravity, you just have to adapt faster than the others."
"I don't think my mind can adapt the same way as my body. If those people need ten years to learn ten thousand runes; how would I use one year to learn ten thousand, that's the equivalent of learning over eight hundred characters a month!"
"If you use everyday to memorize the runes then it should be possible. Those people take ten years mostly because they only take half a day for lessons."
"Judging by that pattern, wouldn't I still need five years!?"
"Sure, we'll do five years but only if you don't mind waiting that long."
"Tch."
Kai clicked his tongue, Reo had grasped his weakness.
"Fine, let's do this."
"Good boy. Let's begin with the knowledge of what everyone should know about runes. Runes are ancient dead languages that can't be spoken. Unless of course, you're a Supreme Being. The reason why runes are so hard to learn is exactly because of this reason; but that also makes it simple. If you don't need to learn how to recite it, then you'll execute it easier. But since you can't recite it, it'll be quite harder to memorize. Your body and mind are special, the only reason I shortened it to a year is because I know that you can handle it. Think about it, when I taught you about something; have you truly forgotten?"
"No..."
"Exactly, you just store information at the back of your head for later use. You need to bring out the potential of that gift and harness that knowledge, much like how spirits store information for when they hibernate."
"You should really know that I won't be tricked by that, what you're demanding is still unreasonable."
"Tch."
"You don't have to copy me! You're not even talking, you're just using telepathy!"
"Don't mind it. Anyway, let's get back to the lesson."
A transparent board appeared behind Reo, it really felt like a classroom.
Runes started writing themselves on the board as Kai was awed.
"These are the twenty basic rune characters."
"...how do you even write those? They're more like drawings than characters really..."
"This is how they're made, each one has a meaning, and there are countless ways to inscribe them."
"The more you explain the more I lose my motivation, really."
"Don't worry, you'll get used to it."
I guess I should try that tactic.
Reo made a smirk but hid it deep within his expression.
"Since the power of runes aren't fit for humans to freely control, they cannot be directly used. They have to be inscribed on surfaces, not should, they have to be. I've heard of a person who was drunk on power, he kept seeking higher heights even when his spirit had warned him. He took the opportunity when his spirit was unfocused to inscribe runes on his own body. He thought that with his strength, his body could hold the power of runes."
Kai listened closely to Reo's story.
"Inscribing the runes themselves do no harm to the body but activating the runes is considered suicide. His body first burned because the magic power was bursting out from the inside and then exploded. The spirit returned to the spirit world and has not made a contract with anyone since; it had blamed itself for not protecting its owner. The vow between contractor and spirit isn't weak, if one of them break a vow; there are extreme repercussions."
Kai gulped and engraved the story into his memory.
"Now, I will teach you the structure of runes."
