《Rebirth: Monarchs》Chapter 17: Preparation

A day had passed since Kai had tested out his new body and magic. It was now mid-summer and the tournaments in the Kuroshi Clan would start soon.
"Hmm..."
Kai had his arms behind his head and was staring at the sky.
"Homesick?"
"No..."
"Then, what is it?"
"I'm just thinking, the tournament in the clan should start very soon."
"I don't think so."
"Huh?"
Kai looked at Reo in confusion.
"What are you talking about? Didn't you destroy the arena?"
"Ah, right."
"They could probably repair it since it's nearly been three months, but I doubt that they'll hold another tournament because of the competitor's state of mind."
"What do you mean?"
"They're all probably scared out of their wits when they realize that the darkness attribute can take over their body, though there is another factor on how you went out of control."
"Factor?"
"Yeah... have you ever heard of bloodlines?"
"Bloodlines? You mean how offsprings gain the blood of their parents?"
"You're correct but I'm talking about something different."
Reo shook his head at Kai's words but immediately began explaining.
"All bloodlines contain the power of their parents but there are special bloodlines. These special bloodlines can give the unbelievably strong power of the ancestors to the descendants. Your bloodline is very strong, in fact; it's so strong that a human's body shouldn't be able to hold it."
"Then how...?"
Reo shook his head.
"I don't know. In fact, I don't even know what kind of bloodline this is. I haven't heard of this bloodline before, there's certainly a human bloodline but I also feel something that's not from a human."
"So my parents aren't human?"
"That's not necessarily it. They should be human but there's gotta be something hidden within them. Something dormant but dangerous, of course the same goes for you."
Reo nodded multiple times during his explanation as if he was still piecing the puzzles together.

"Ah, since you have time I'll tell you something. Look at the pendant on your neck."
"This pendant?"
Kai held his pendant and looked at it closely.
"Send some magic into it."
"Uhh, okay..."
The pendant shone and a whole new space was shown to Kai.
"What is this...?"
There were a lot of objects inside the white space; food, water, papers, scrolls, and even a few regular weapons.
But Kai's eyes were directed at two floating transparent orbs and a cube rotating above the rest.
"Kai, this is a storage space! It's amazing how your parents have this, only the king of this country should own one and it definitely wouldn't be as large nor as mobile as this one. A storage space is normally as large as a treasure chest and the space inside should only be a few square meters worth of space, but this pendant's storage space is at least as wide as a building."
Reo showered the pendant with praise but he wasn't inside it. He had used the spirit's version of [Spirit Sense], instead of locating the owner; it enabled the spirit to look through the eyes of the owner to provide sufficient help. Humans can't look through the eyes of spirits because spirits have some secrets that can never be revealed to humans.
Naturally, this technique has its limits. If the contractor doesn't want their eyes be used, they can naturally decline. Spirits have no ability to force their contractors to do anything, if Kai knew that; he definitely wouldn't be pushed around like before.
Even if he vowed to never do wrong for his spirit, the spirit also had to vow for their contractor.
"Kai, grab one of those orbs."
"Nn."
Kai nodded and stepped towards one of the orbs that were glowing green. He reached out with his hand and the orb as if controlled by his mind; moved towards him.
The orb disappeared into his palm and information flew into Kai's head. It was healing magic and how to use it. There was also a message from his mother but it was locked.

"It's new magic and a message that appears to be inaccessible..."
"Nevermind the message, it's easy to lock thoughts like these. It must have a certain requirement like getting strong enough. But the magic, what is it?"
"Healing magic."
"Hoooh."
Reo voiced out surprise.
"Is it that rare?"
"No, in fact every team of mages have at least one healer."
"Then, what is it?"
"I never imagined that you would find healing magic in a place like this. Judging by this country's standards; there should only be healers in the capital."
"I see."
"But I am wondering one thing."
"What is it?"
"Healing magic can only be used on other people. I don't see the point of using it on yourself."
"But this can be used on me or so the instructions say."
"Eh...?"
Kai ignored Reo who had stopped talking and walked towards a blue orb. The same event that happened to the green orb also occured with the blue orb. Information flew into his head and this time it was directions and information.
"Desolate Beast Mountain Range. Illusion world. The pendant's seal."
He recited the names of the information that flew into his head.
"Another message was added to this one as well but unfortunately, it is also locked."
Kai looked at the final floating item, the cube, or better known as illusion world.
"So this is what had transported me to that place."
"Nn, we'll use that in the future. I am certain that with the current you; you'd survive a whole day in there but I doubt that this artifact only has one twenty-four hour cycle. We have to prepare you sufficiently when using this artifact."
Kai looked at the space once more before he retracted his consciousness from the space to his real body.
Reo who had his eyes closed while using [Spirit Sense] opened his eyes once more.
"Let's start preparations immediately."
"Nn."
Kai gave his consent while he was staring at his pendant.
"Do I have to go there someday?"
Kai looked to the distance on where Desolate Beast Mountain Range should be.
"Kai, I'll let you fill me in on the details later. For now, let's make some weapons!"
"Weapons?"
Kai immediately imagined swords, axes, spears, and many other weapons. He doesn't have any knowledge of the weapons in this world so he could only think of regular weapons.
"Enchanted Gear. Weapons that are enchanted with magical runes. Regular weapons aren't of much use in battle with magicians or enhanced fighters."
That's right, not everybody in this world can use magic and enhance their body. Humans are gifted with magic but at least thirty percent of humans cannot use magic. The thirty percent of humans are left with a regular human body much like Kai's previous world. Due to the mass number, there has been no ridicule against them.
Twenty percent of the seventy percent that can use magic aren't gifted in using magic but using bodily enhancements. This promoted the use of Enchanted Gear, weapons invented thousands of years in the past. Magicians who can only use bodily enhancements are mostly found as soldiers in armies, with enhanced bodies and Enchanted Gear, all of them are forces to be reckoned with.
"Your clan is special even among clans with magic. Your clan trains everyone in both magic and body. Although your clan doesn't have much talents, there's at least a few every year. Even in my slumber, I could absorb information from the outside world."
"When will we start creating Enchanted Gear?"
"In two days."

The Last Science [SE]
[SE has the same content as the original story, split into smaller chunks for easier reading. This story is on a temporary hiatus due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I work in healthcare and unfortunately no longer have the freetime to continue posting on a regular basis. As soon as our workload decreases, I will return. Thanks for reading! 💙] No one ever knows the whole story. Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, the fading town of Rallsburg stumbles upon an amazing discovery—magic itself. Faced with potentially world-shattering power, the people of Rallsburg keep the secret for themselves. Led by Rachel DuValle, a perpetually underestimated college student with grand ambitions, they seek to found a new society. The world beyond suspects nothing, but magic cannot stay hidden forever. A train arrives in Rallsburg carrying Alden Bensen, a directionless high school graduate. To him, magic could represent meaning for his life, an explanation for his empty existence. This potent force offers anyone the power to change humanity forever—or send it cascading into swift and total annihilation. The Last Science is an ongoing science-fiction / low-fantasy web novel series, focused on the modern world with a twist. New societies bud and grow, but the people who make them up are imperfect and flawed. The story includes elements of mystery, action, crime, interpersonal drama, relationships, philosophy, sociology, politics, and much more, all centered on the perspective characters driving the tale. This is the "Scraps Edition" of the story, where the chapters have been split up into bite-size chunks (roughly 1500-3000 words), for your convenience. The prose has been edited from its original form, with some improvements, but there are no content differences from the original. New chapters will be posted throughout each week starting on Friday and appearing on multiple days thereafter, depending on the length of the chapter. Content Warning (by request): This series delves into some topics and situations which may be upsetting for some readers. In American rating parlance, the narrative would be rated PG-13 (except for language), but some have noted the story can get pretty dark on occasion.
