《Rebirth: Monarchs》Chapter 14: Spiritual Powers

Reo's pupils were glowing and his eyes were emitting purple smoke.
Kai unconsciously took a step back from the sight and gulped.
"I can't be afraid."
"Kai, walk into the circle."
Kai nodded and walked to circle made of runic patterns in the center.
"You will now encounter a series of tests, since I am of the element of darkness; you will experience more violent trials than any other element."
Kai nodded with a resolute look.
"Good, now repeat after me."
"[I, the contractor, Kuroshi Kai."
"[I, the contractor, Kuroshi Kai."
"Swear under the King of Spirit's guidance-"
"Swear under the King of Spirit's guidance, that I, Kuroshi Kai will uphold the vows I will make today. I swear an oath to my spirit under the the King of Spirit's eyes; I will never mistreat my contracted spirit, I will only use the powers of my spirit my spirit's consent, and I will be a being worthy of my spirit."
Kai closed his eyes.
"I, Kuroshi Kai, with the vows I have made, will now take the trial of the contractor]!"
A bright light emitted from the cave and Kai's consciousness was transferred to another place.
Everything was white and Kai's body was standing in the center-no, it couldn't really be called the center, the place didn't seem to have any limits in sight.
"Who are you?"
A deep voice filled with experience had asked Kai.
"Kuroshi Kai..."
Kai managed to say his name after a moment's hesitation.
"What is your goal?"
"To become a monarch."
"I will ask again, what is your goal?"
Kai furrowed his brows at the question.
"What do you mean? I already answered you."
"I asked, what is your goal?"
The aged voice contained hints of anger.
Kai twitched.
"My goal? To become a monarch? No... To meet that girl I met at the end of my life once more? No. To become a monarch is his goal, to meet is our goal, so what is my goal?"
Kai sat down cross legged and closed his eyes.
"Have I ever done anything for myself? I'm not selfless, in fact I haven't helped anyone before; only her."
Kai kept his silence for a few minutes whilst muttering his thoughts.
"Why haven't I done anything for myself?"
"What is my goal?"
"What is the reason for my life? Is it for others? Is it for her?"

"What drives me to live everyday?"
Kai was questioning his very existence with that one simple question.
"I knew it..."
The aged voice once again talked.
"He's a hollow shell, he isn't a person. He lives not knowing why, that's natural. But he lives not knowing himself, there is nothing that drives him."
Kai had opened his eyes and stared blankly into space for hours on end. He never felt hunger, he never felt numb, he never felt time pass.
"If a person like him were to make a contract with a spirit, it would be worthless."
The voice had contempt hidden within.
"In the first place, why does a person need to have a goal?"
"Ah, I understand now."
Kai suddenly stood up
"I understand now!"
He suddenly looked up and shouted into the sky.
"Hooh?"
The voice had curiosity hidden within.
"And what do you understand exactly?"
"Ask me the questions once more."
Kai commanded the voice which made the voice a bit irate.
"Alright... what is your name?"
"My name is Kuroshi Kai."
"...?"
The voice was confused but continued.
"What is your goal?"
"My goal is to not just become a monarch of this world, I plan to become the monarch of everything. The monarch of monarchs. The one that gave me this life, I will surpass him."
"You mean your goal is to fight against God and creation itself?"
"No, my true goal is known only to myself."
Kai's attitude changed. Had questioning his existence for hours changed him? No, that wasn't possible. Not unless someone's mind was extremely fragile, but he had lives two lives. How was it possible for Kai to have a weak mind? Unless, per say, it was there from the start.
"Something is different about you, I can't say if it's for the better or worse. You've become arrogant, I have no idea what had happened to you but you'll need this attitude if you are to have a contracted spirit. Spirits are beings above humans, they are not fit to be used by cowards and weaklings."
The voice fell silent as if contemplating something.
"Alright, you've passed the first test."
A bright flash of light caused Kai to close his eyes for a bit. After he opened them, he was greeted by darkness.

"Where is this now?"
Kai rolled his eyes.
"Since you seem to be quite impatient, I'll get to the point."
A voice that belonged to an old woman resounded.
"I will now test your potential, a person with limited potential mustn't be allowed to wield a spirit. It would only be a waste."
Pillars numbering hundreds appeared around Kai.
"What's this?"
"This is a test of talent, it doesn't have to do with environment, it just shows how much the person can grow. Now, place your hand on the glass ball on top of the pillar."
Kai did as instructed and placed his hand on top of the glass ball.
"Send in your mana."
Kai closed his eyes after a brief instant and made his mana flow into the glass ball, it turned blue and began to rotate.
"Potential? A trivial thing."
Kai scoffed.
A pillar lit up followed by another, the pace they lit up went faster and faster until every single pillar lit up.
"Impossible! How can a human have this much potential?!"
[A/N: He's the M.C.]
The whole world began to shake and a pillar larger than the rest rose from the ground in the distance.
That pillar also lit up and all the pillar shot out lights into the sky as they intertwined.
"U-u-unlimited Potential!"
The voice was in utter disbelief.
"Only beings that are on the level of the King of Spirits are able to light up every pillar!"
The light formed a giant medallion with a dragon carved into it.
The medallion rotated a few times before turning small and flying into Kai's hand.
"A medallion with a symbol of a dragon?"
"S-S-S-Supreme Being-level talent!"
The voice kept stuttering after the event that had taken place in front of her.
"Because of that medallion, you are now exempted from the next exams! Have a good day, Supreme Being candidate!"
"Eh?"
Kai only managed to let out a single voice before going back into the real world.
"You're back! The contract has finally been completed, you have now gained my powers of spiritual darkness. Spirit magic is entirely different from regular magic. You could say that spirit magic is levels stronger but you can also say regular magic is stronger. As I've said before, it all depends on talent!"
Reo nodded multiple times.
"Although you did come back a lot faster than I expected. You only took three days."
"Days? Not hours?"
Kai was confused.
"Yeah, your perception of time is erased while you're in the Spirit World."
"Anyway, you said it all depended on talent right."
Kai had a smug look on his face.
"I hope you lit up at least fifty pillars, that would make you a demon-level talent."
Kai didn't answer Reo and took something from his pocket.
Reo was trembling and had his mouth wide open when he saw the medallion.
"Supreme Being candidate!"
Reo was in utter disbelief and was struck speechless for a few minutes.
"Uh, Reo?"
Kai managed to knock Reo out of his shock.
"Ah, right. Yeah..."
Reo shook his head multiple times before turning to face Kai.
"We'll practice spirit magic tomorrow, for now I'll give you a taste of my power."
Reo burst into purple smoke and went inside Kai's body.
Kai didn't feel anything and just let Reo do what he wanted.
"This power..."
"Right, this is my power!"
Kai was trembling in excitement.
"This is insane!"
Kai lifted both his fists and clenched them hard.
He then opened his right fist into a palm and darkness was sitting on top of his palm.
"With this power, I'll be unrivalled!"
"Don't rejoice yet."
While Kai was ecstatic about his new power, he suddenly felt immense pain.
"Agh!"
Kai knelt on one knee and clenched his chest.
"What is this...?!"
Reo turned into smoke and disappeared from Kai's body.
"Your current body can only withstand my powers for ten seconds at most, after that you'll feel immense pain."
Kai was panting, the pain had disappeared as if it was never there.
"I see... There are no shortcuts to power, huh?"
Kai smiled wryly and looked upwards, though he was in a cave so he could not see anything.
"Just you watch, with my own power; I'll reach the height that you had reached!"
Kai vowed to the person that had given him this second life.
"And, I'll meet you in this world as well."
Kai smiled as Reo had '?' floating above his head.

8 183The Chronicles of Artharian Dagworth
Back in 2020 there were many theories on how the world would end. From the many religions apocalypses, nuclear wars that would leave the planet inhabitable, global warming doing the same, biological weapons getting out of control, viruses mutating into unstoppable diseases to the dead raising to prey on humanity, either due to a virus or just because hell filled up. Also, aliens, from the war mongering kind to the ones so advanced they didn’t see us as more than worms. And of course there was the fail proof theory that the world would end when the sun died. In a bunch of billion years give or take. Althougth some new scientist were discussing if the end would be on the take side, since when the sun started dying things would go haywire on the entire solar system and we would collide with mercury or maybe mars way before the expanding sun engulfed earth. But I digress… Now, those were the mainstream theories that the everyday Joe, who didn’t know the big secret, worried about. So, if you were to ask me which theory was correct I can tell you that I haven’t seen any little green man, at least not from another planet, and so far the sun is still shining, although it’s been only 9 years since everything went to hell, not the few billions (give or take) the scientist predicted, so that one isn’t ruled out yet. These two aside, I'd say all of them. Hey everyone, this is my first attempt at writing. I have been planning to do it for a really long time, and while this is not the one epic fantasy idea I ever wanted to write, I think it's a good one. The plan is to write an end of the world urban-fantasy series. Think a world like Dresden Files, Alex Verus, Iron druid, where magic is real but exist hidden from society meets the apocalypse. It will be written in first person in the Dresden Files style, no plans for other POV for now. As you probally alredy guessed from my style, english is not my first langague, so while google corrector helps, expect grammar errors, and I'd be gratefull for anyone to point them. I plan to write 2 to 3 chapters a week, 2000-4000 words each. Might change as I get more experience and depends on my free time. Cover image from the colections of getwallpapers.com
8 188In Pursuit of Bark's Finest
On the frontiers of transhumanity’s expansion into the galaxy thousands of light years from the light of Sol, things can get rather chaotic. There are countless millions of nascent interstellar nations securing their interests, pirate ships prospering off plunder and deniable mercenary work, dissidents setting up their own civilizations, and other groups all trying to push an agenda. When these groups crash into each other, the results can become extremely messy and convoluted. Recently, a frontier nation calling itself the Red Star Union has found itself at the focal point of one such complication. A freighter under their protection has been sabotaged, hijacked in interstellar space, and robbed of its cargo. This would be bad enough even if all it were carrying was luxury goods, but the freighter Nebula Plow was carrying more than just normal trade goods. Indeed, her cargo of Non-Orientable Wormholes for use in starship power plants was both very expensive and very, very dangerous. Now the Red Star Union has to worry about a pirate crew running around with several extra devices capable of converting matter into antimatter with negligible energy cost. With those, the pirates could be capable of inflicting untold damage if allowed to leverage their ill-gotten gains into a stronger position, a possibility the Union finds completely intolerable. Unfortunately, all that the Red Star Union has to go on for evidence is two names; that of the captain, and that of the ship. The Captain is going by the possible pseudonym of Fuller, while the ship is named Bark’s Finest. And thus the orders came down to the Union’s Bureau of Starforce Intelligence: find more information on these pirates, conclusively identify them, and figure out where exactly they’ve gone to ground so that the fleet can crush them before they get established. Of the many agents that the bureau assigned to this mission, one would happen to play an important role: Field Agent Madeline Zargosty. This is her story. This story is entirely pre-written, and will have one chapter released per week. If you want to read it all ahead of schedule and get access to some premium-exclusive bonus content, the entire book is available for purchase; links to the appropriate storefront pages will be posted at the end of each chapter. This story is also being posted to Scribblehub.
