《Rebirth: Monarchs》Chapter 10: Recognition

Akane simply sat on the other side of arena and rested. Yoko exchanged some words with Kai and began to walk towards the stage.
"Would you two like a few minutes to rest?"
Yoko and Akane looked at each other's eyes then nodded.
"Alright, give them both a health potion."
The head elder who sat on a chair on the highest point of the arena suddenly spoke causing everyone to look in surprise.
"A health potion...?!"
"Seriously...?"
"Eh?"
The elder who was facilitating the battles was startled. An average health potion costs ten silver coins.
(A/N: Three coins for this continent: gold, silver, and copper. A gold piece costs a hundred silver which would cost ten thousand copper in total. So a hundred copper for one silver, a hundred silver for one gold.)
An average household lives off of ten thousand copper in a year. A single health potion would take up a tenth of that income. Apothecaries are regarded very highly because even a rookie apothecary who can make a few health potions would become several times richer than those of others.
Of course, being an apothecary is not without risk; many people would target them for their own personal benefits and many apothecaries also suffer from backlash from their own medicine.
Health potions are commonly used by adventurers because they go into danger very often. Adventurers are paid money if they turn in monsters at the guilds so a health potion is cheap but life-saving commodity for them.
"I understand."
The elder nodded at the head elder and gave the two health potions personally.
"Keep these safe."
Yoko and Akane nodded slowly.
"In case you two have any plans to return them because you're not injured, you can save them for later. These two health potions are your property now."
The head elder stopped them before they could get a chance. Once the head elder saw Yoko and Akane's glance, he knew that these two would return the gifts after it fell in their hands.
"Boy, I won't give you a health potion since you've already rested because of your exemptions. I hope you understand."
Kai was startled by the sudden mention of himself and nodded unconsciously.
Ah, I just threw away the chance to get a free health potion.
Kai's expression fell from his mistake.
A few minutes pass as Akane and Yoko both stood on opposite sides of the stage. This was normally supposed to be the most anticipated final match but since Kai had went straight to the finals, the matchup that the audience were originally expecting had already arrived.
The elder looked at both contestants and unhurriedly raised his hand.
"Let the battle commence!"
Akane and Yoko stood still seemingly watching each other's movements.
The harmony between the two was broken when Yoko shot out from her position. Akane mirrored her movements and ran at full speed.

Yoko's right leg curved to hit the side of Akane but Akane's palms danced and striked the center of Yoko's knee. Yoko's right leg stiffened and Akane dodged.
Yoko didn't hesitate and continued her assault. She halted her right foot on the floor and placed her palm to support herself. She was going to do a sweeping attack.
Akane predicted her movements and leapt backwards.
"You're pretty good... tch."
Yoko clicked her tongue in frustration.
"My parents taught me a thing or two on how to avoid attacks, they didn't want me to get too hurt..."
Akane replied.
"Have they really only trained for three days? They're absolute monsters..."
"I remember needing a whole month to grasp the basics of combat but when I see those two... I feel ashamed to even mention my past achievements..."
"Hooh, they're better than I originally thought."
Reo's praise startled Kai.
"Wait... are they on my level...?"
"How could mere basic combat training amount to the things I have taught you? In terms of pure talent in martial arts, those two girls are definitely above you; but that is only for now. I can tell that once you grasp the true essence of combat, you'll soar way above those two. Your talent in everything is superb, not to mention those two elements of yours... Ah."
Reo suddenly paused as he realized something.
"What is it?"
"I just remembered something, since I just finished hibernating, I still regain pieces of knowledge from before. Something of interest popped up into my head and it's related to the two elements you were born with. You see, there are people who are born without a primary element but are born with a secondary element, these people are called irregulars. They contain immense power and have more strength than regular attribute users; that only involves regular attribute users though. If light and darkness were to be compared to irregulars, it would be up to the strength of the users. A fusion of two elements is always stronger than a single element."
"So they're born with secondary elements which is the fusion of primary elements? How does that happen exactly?"
"This is directly related to bloodlines, for example: a person born with the wind attribute and a person born with water attribute were to conceive a child, there would be a one percent chance for a child to be born as an irregular. They aren't rare but they won't be found easily. I remember the elder talking about the duke from the 'Mariko Palace', the elder said that the duke has dual attributes of wind and water and is able to create ice. If his spouse also had dual attributes or at least one of the elements of wind or water, there'd be a five percent chance for their offsprings to become irregulars."

"So those offsprings cannot use primary elements? Wouldn't that be quite disadvantageous?"
Kai was really confused at the concept.
"It's actually a power to be envied since it can give the user a huge boost when compared to others. It is one of the powers along with dual attributes that allow people to skip levels and defeat enemies above their strength."
Kai appeared in front of Kai and stared into his eyes once more.
"But since you have one of the two strongest primary elements and a secondary element, even I have no clue about your future achievements. I'll wait for more information to appear in my head so that I can help you with this. You never know, your body may be hiding a huge secret that would cause the continent to look at you in envy, hahaha."
Reo jokingly said those words, little did he know that Kai's achievements would far surpass his imagination.
Back on the stage, Akane and Yoko had exchanged a few words and began to fight with martial arts once more.
"Take this!"
Akane jumped and launched an axe kick, Yoko had not chosen to dodge but instead chose to block. Yoko crossed both of her arms on top of her and focused [Body Enhancement] on her arms and legs.
When Akane's leg hit Yoko's arms, cracks began to spread on the surface below but she stood still as if unaffected. Yoko grabbed the leg that hit her arms and managed to bring Akane close to her.
Akane panicked and used her other leg to kick Yoko's head.
Yoko released one of the hands that were latched on Akane's leg and used her arm to block the incoming attack. Akane took advantage of the opportunity and managed to get away from Yoko. She then leapt backwards multiple times until she was fifty odd meters away.
"She gave up the premise of defeating her in close combat."
Kai silently muttered.
"[Double Cast]. [Shadow Ball]!"
Once again, Akane had concealed the first spell and yelled [Shadow Ball]. Yoko knew she had no chance if she were to use a single [Shadow Ball] to counter.
"I have to risk it!"
Yoko bit her lower lip and leapt backwards as she prepared her technique.
"[Dark Beam]!"
Seconds before Akane's attack could reach Yoko, she finished casting her spell.
(A/N: Oh just in case anyone is confused on casting speed and anything related to it, I'll leave this piece of information: they have to channel their magic in order to use the techniques and can't just carelessly shout the moves.)
Yoko's [Dark Beam] was stopped by Akane's [Shadow Ball]. A large boom rang out at the point of impact and sent the two of them flying backwards.
"Gah!"
"Ahh!"
Yoko and Akane were both lying down at the end of the stage. Their defenses aren't enough to defend against collision against magic but it definitely was enough to endure the shockwave.
Akane and Yoko both wordlessly stood up and faced each other.
"Should we end this?"
"Nn."
Yoko nodded at Akane's suggestion.
They both walked towards each other and began to channel magic.
"I'll use everything I have, I expect you do the same."
They weren't very tired but if this match continued, it may very well end up in a tie.
"I will."
They both channeled [Body Enhancement] to the absolute limit and disappeared from their positions.
The speed of the two was frighteningly fast for their peers and they were simply unable to follow. Even Kai was only able to barely keep up at the speed of the two.
"They're using everything they have for a final clash. Your bones are still too weak to do a prolonged fight. Though I'm not sure if those two are even able to follow their own speed."
Reo calmly assessed.
"So you're saying that they're both fighting blindly?"
Reo nodded and watched the battle.
Sounds of fists clashing and shockwaves rang out on random parts of the stage. They were simply too fast and were unable to predict where they might end up if they used all their power on speed. But even if they were strong, they still have limits.
"I can last for only twenty seconds at most... I need to end this!"
"I have to end this is in the next exchange!"
Yoko and Akane roared as they clashed one more time.
Akane's fist shot out but Yoko grabbed her arm and pulled Akane towards her.
"[Shadow Ball]!"
"Wha-?!"
Akane was surprised by the sudden use of magic and was blown away.
"Ahhh!"
She got blasted off the stage because she was caught off guard but because of [Body Enhancement], she wasn't relatively injured but her stamina and magic were both drained.
"A surprise attack, huh?"
Kai nodded at Yoko's methods. Yoko knew that Akane had a possibility to defeat her in that exchange so she used a tactic that would ensure her victory, though the arm that grabbed Akane must be injured because she tried to pull something that fast.
Kai's thoughts were on point as Yoko's arm was dislocated from forcefully grabbing Akane and using magic.
"She's crazy..."
Akane muttered before fainting outside the stage.
Yoko was panting and fell down on the floor.
"Competitor Yoko wins because competitor Akane is out of bounds!"

Pawns of God
Five Lines PitchJoin Mark in his fight against a God and change the game's destiny! Delve into a slow-paced story focused on the progression of the main party and the development of the world. Mark himself will be narrating his life inside the game, and to a much lesser extend outside. Guild building, economy, and strategy are the central pieces of the novel. Mark is not overpowered, he will have to build his own power through action-packed battles, trials, traumas, love, and death. Accompany him, the healer and the strategist, an agent of chaos, in the adventure of his life. Without further preamble, I will let Mark take the mic. SynopsisHi! My name is Mark. This is my story, my life as I live it day after day. I’m in my thirties, and there’s nothing I love more than playing online games. I’ve just joined the action on the newest VRMMO game, Pawns of God. An immersive experience you can play while sleeping. Of course, as a game that takes pride in its long development and technological advances, everything inside seems and feels real. Beware, this is not a game-turns-real story. I love my own world and I would detest being summoned into another one. If that ever happens, I’ll just quickly take my life and be done with it. I play with my friends, in a party of 5. We have taken several roles, but lately, I've come to love being a healer. It's my secret ambition to someday be the shotcaller. I am not overpowered. If there is any bug or exploit in the game, they are yet to be discovered. Anyhow, for a game of this scale, the company is pouring all of its resources into test servers, QA, and beta tests. I don’t expect to find any, so I’ll be playing the game just like any other person. I must say, though, I am easily distracted, as you will immediately notice once you start. I'm working on it, I promise to improve! I am no hero. Being in my 30s, my heart is too old for this shit. I wouldn’t mind being one, of course. Who hasn’t dreamt of it? Either way, I’m not doing any grand quest to save the world. Whatever the game throws to their users, I’ll be there to experience it. Most of my life, at least the interesting parts that I’ll be narrating, happen inside the game itself. Rarely, there will be some IRL (In Real Life) chapters. You’ll understand, however, that as a freelance software developer, there is not much I can entertain you with when outside the game. Did I say I love games? Well, I’m also a fan of LitRPG literature. You know, journeys of magic, relationships, personal development, items, skills, discovery… In the spirit of not overwhelming my public, I’ll condense each chapter into circa 1500 words. You might have noticed some tags over this story, let me elaborate. I like to swear. I’m not shy when it comes to cursing my enemies, friends, or even myself. When there’s blood, I tell it as I see it. And… it hurts to admit it, but I’m not a casanova. Of course, this doesn’t mean that I won’t ever find love. So, in case I do end up finding it, let’s keep my sexual options open. As for traumas, none yet, but the future is vast and unknown. Release Schedule The schedule is subject to change, particularly if enough readers end up loving it. All chapters are already written, thus there is enough freedom to modify them. Arc 1 * Chapters 1-14: Each released one day and an hour later than the previous. Starting with chapter 2 at 09:20 UTC+2 on day 1, and finishing at 21:20 UTC+2 on day 13.
