《Unprecedented》Chapter 15

"So what is it I'm suppose to do?" I asked Evan. It was 9:03 pm Sunday night, and we were parked just a few blocks away from Hailey's house. The night was cool and windy, but bearable enough. Evan sat in front seat typing on his laptop. Then he turns to me and says, "The main goal is keeping an eye out for an antique Grandfather clock. I sent you a copy of the picture on the phone that I gave you. Where's your phone?"
I stared at him and scoffed. "You took it. Remember? Why can't I use my phone?" He rolled his eyes. "Because these are not only owners but Blackmarketers. They'll easily track you, dummy." He flicked my forehead. "Anyways, the secondary goal is just keeping your eyes alert to everything, and don't get caught or you're screwed."
He leans back in his seat. "Got it?"
"Whatever, I'm out of here."
I opened the car door and and slammed it violently, walking away with a grin as he cursed into blasting horns.
I came across a few houses until I reached a two story house, extended to a beautiful porch decorated with flowers and a swing chair.
As I got closer there was someone at the door greeting guests. He was a tall fair skinned guy with brown hair, dressed as a gentleman. He smiled at the guests as they walked through the door. I got next in line and handed him my invitation card.
" Welcome," He said with a warm smile. Then he shows me to the door and said,
"Have a good time in there."
"I will." I returned the smile and walked away. I passed through a hallway with many doors and into the living room and boy, is it big. The ceiling had a very expensive chandelier, and a sophisticated decor was pretty nice. There were a lot of strangers and kids from school everywhere talking, eating and dancing.
"Freddie! Hi, I'm so glad you can make it." I heard a voice addressing to me. I turned around and saw Hailey standing behind me. She was wearing a blue velvet dress with a purple pumps and straighten hair. She looked okay and not overly dressed as some were. "Hey Hailey, I've just arrived," I smiled.
"Nice decor by the way." I complemented her.
She smiled with a light, casual flipped of her hair. "Thanks my mother choose it herself, " Then she says. "Speaking of which I absolutely would love for you to meet my parents. l told them a lot about you and they would love to meet you." My pulse suddenly dripped to the bottom of my stomach. Aw crap! Did they figure me out already? I just got here.

"Really?" I said twirling my hair nervously. I didn't know how was I supposed to respond. "That's sweet." I smiled. She then leads the way to her parents, and on the way I proceeded to give myself an internal quick pep talk.
I exhaled silently when I felt calm and collected. Just then we arrived at a open parlor, just a few corners out of the living room. We entered the open door and immediately the atmosphere was different, more quiet and peaceful. Probably because there was a library and a few couches and armchairs. Basically a second living room. At least for me.
There were a few adults in the room, some of which I knew while others were simple strangers to me sitting or standing, drinking and chatting with quiet voices. Then a middle aged couple approached us.
The woman who looked a lot like Hailey with the eye shape and cheeks and a short heighten man with black hair and grey eyes. Both dressed in color matching, sophisticated outfits. Hailey hails out her parents. "Mum, dad this is Freddie Matthews, the girl I told you guys about. Her mom works at the bakery near center Town."
Her mother smiled cheery. "Hello, Freddie. I'm mrs.Robinson, and my husband mr. Robinson but you can call us Wendy and Derek." She added with a "flashy" flare, extending her hands forward. I shook her hand gently. "Hi, mrs. Robinson. Nice to meet you." I smiled.
Her dad looked at me, his grey eyes piercing into mine." He smiled. "Hello dear. Nice to meet you."
Then he shook my hand but as he shook my hand he looked up at me again. "Miss Matthews right? The school President? Hailey has told me that your in charge of running Prom this year. Congratulations." He said. I suddenly felt my face going red. I haven't completely got use to the hype about being in a high position in the school.
"Yes I am, though I am sharing the position with another student Amy Stone, since it was a tie with the votes." I responded. I refused to call Amy my classmate. Then wendy, his wife chimed, "Amy Stone. We've know her family for years now. She's a good girl, isn't she Hailey?" She turns to her daughter. "I'll say..." She said with little enthusiasm.
"So Freddie, how long have you been living in Boston?" Derek asks politely. I thought earnestly. "About 2 years I guess. I grew up on a farm in California, but my mom decided to move here." I didn't wanted to spill much about my background, considering just who they are.

Then a woman came up to the couple and said something to them. Then they looked back at us. "Excuse me, but we really must be going now dear." Mrs. Robinson said. "It was nice meeting you, Freddie. I hope you enjoy the party."
"It was nice meeting you both mr. and mrs. Robinson." I smiled. "Have a good night."
Then they walked away with the woman speaking softly close to them. Then Hailey hooked her arm under mine. "How about we go have some fun? Everyone's waiting." She led the way back into the living room.
3hours later.....
After 3 hours of drinks, snacks, a house tour, gossiping and games I was finally ready to go home. I couldn't think straight. I asked Hailey to the nearest rest room to freshen up and take my leave. As I got out the bathroom and into the hall I immediately lost my way. I forgot where I came from and I found retracing my steps to be very painful. In the end I entered a random door.
When I got in the room was bright filled with boxes and items laying everywhere. I spotted the Grandfather clock on a high shelf with other clocks.
'Woah... It's like a antique shop in here. ' I thought as I stepped into the room a bit further.
There was a table at the corner of the room with jewelry boxes on it. As I got closer I saw the rare ring that Evan talked about. It was so shiny. I was about to stretch my hand forward to touch it, when I heard a slight cough behind me. I quickly spun around and saw mr. Robinson standing at the entrance, staring at me with a hard look. My heart sunk into the bottom the floor.
"Oh my gosh, I- I am so sorry!" I blurted out an apology stammering. "I d-didn't mean to pry I got lost on my way out to the bathroom. So I was just sorta trying to find my way back. But clearly I got this distracted." I said. Then I continued rambling until he broke into a smile. "You nowadays kids, always meddling." He shook his head. "It's okay dear. I understand." Then he turned to the items in the room. "These are old antiques that I often collect from antique owners. Pretty neat huh?" He chuckled.
"I'll say." I replied amazed. Then he exits to the door. "Come along. I'll show you the way back." He says leading me through and as we got out he closed the door behind him and shut the door. When we proceeded down the hall.
We entered the open living room at last and he turns to me. "Well I should get going again, if you do happen to get lost again just ask for directions." He said kindly. I smiled sheepishly. " I will, as matter of fact I think I should get going. The party was great, I had fun. Goodnight mr. Robinson, and do say Hi to Wendy for me." He nodded with a smile and says, "It was nice having you, I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. Goodnight dear. " Then he walks away.
Hailey suddenly enters the scene. "Where have you been? Got lost?" She joked. "Yeah one tour doesn't mean I know your entire house now." I laughed. Then I looked at my watch on my wrist. It was 10:12 pm. "Hey Hailey it's getting pretty late and I've got a busy day ahead of me, with Prom and all, so I think I'm gonna head home." I said getting my coat from the nearest cost hanger nearby the entrance. She nodded. "Ah, it's okay I understand. I'm glad you came though." She smiled. "Me too. I had fun, goodnight." I said as I made my way through the door.
"Goodnight!" She waved. I gave her one last smiled then got out the door, closing it gently.
As my made my way down the block there was Evan's car parked a few steps away. I jumped in the backseat and headed a sigh of relief. He turned his head towards the backseat. "How was work?" He grinned. As I lay on the seat I rolled my eyes with a small groan. "Can't you just shut up and step on it?" He continued grinning as he turn his back. "I take that as awful." He chuckled as he turned on the ignition and drived away.

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began.
