Scene 2 - Eggs
They walked along the path and fought a few gray willow spiders in masses. Dozens of gray-foot long shadows flashed along the walls; hitting Vince and the girls fast and hard with fierce attacks. That fight, the three suffered minor wounds thanks to Vince’s magic: increasing gravity around them, slowing the spiders to a snail’s pace. Although the fight was still tough with so many targets, the gains were pretty good in talismans: seven or eight each wave.
Exhausted after their fourth wave, the group decided to take a break and resume their hunting later. After a few minutes, the Labyrinth started to shift at a rapid pace, changing their path and blocking the pathway behind them.
Leaving two paths before them; left and right were the only choices currently available. Uru casually took the lead without discussing anything with Vince, which annoyed him, but he could deal with it. She went to the right, saying something about smelling food. Intrigued, Vince decided not to argue and followed Uru with Tal in tow. It didn’t take them long to reach a very large room.
Inside the room, large amounts of vines and moss covered the floor. Brightly lit, in the center of the room were three strange colored eggs. They were two feet long and one and a half foot long.
The eggs lay inside a nest made of moss, vines, and bits of bone from what Vince could gather. They were strange in design; they had scales tightly packed like a fish. One egg had gold stripes on white; another had strange shapes colored in gray on purple. Finally, the last egg was fully black with the end of the scales tinted red.
Truly strange.
So strange that Uru and Tal went forward without fear and grabbed two of the eggs. Vince was awestruck; did they have no common sense at all?!? Who would be that crazy enough to steal eggs from that huge of a nest!

Vine whispered loudly, “What do you think you guys are doing?! Do you want us to get killed by the mother of who laid these eggs?!”
Uru sniffed the air, “Hmm, no momma nearby da eggs... placed by da hands of man about five suns ago. These. Food. Monster eggs… good way, raise strength.”
Nodding his head, Vince remembered that the senior-apprentice, sister Marley, did indeed mention in their studies, that ingesting powerful monster eggs could increase your cultivation base and fleshy body. However, the problem with this method would be acquiring said eggs.
Also even if you could acquire many eggs; the eggs wouldn’t show effects after eating five or six eggs on your cultivation base. From then on ingesting monster eggs would only increase the toughness towards your fleshy body. But to show any true effects to the fleshy body, perhaps thousands upon thousands of eggs, would be needed to show any real permanent effects depending on how powerful their parents were.
Perhaps he could give this egg to Nena? He didn’t know what type of monster was inside, but it shouldn’t matter, it’ll increase her strength by a large degree. Making up his mind and forgetting the dangers; Vince grabbed the black and red egg, thinking ‘what could go wrong?’ After all, the other two were already picked up by the sisters.
As soon as he picked up the egg, everything went to hell. The walls in front of them opened up to show a hoard of variously sized monsters of rank three to six! Without a second thought, the three began to flee. Fight? Ha! Even with his magic, Vince wouldn’t be able to kill them all.
When they were a good distance away, about eighty meters, they heard the roars and cold snorts behind them. They didn’t dare look back at the beasts, death was right behind them.

Vince yelled at Uru, “I thought you said they were placed by human hands!”
Uru, as if just thinking about that, turned to Vince, “Aw I forgot ta tell ya, Viney, that I also smelled monsters behind da wall. I didn’t think that da wall would up in go in smoke ya hear!”
Cursing under his breath in rage, Vince tried to throw away the egg, only to find it was stuck in his hands. He sighed to himself over the fact he should've gotten more information before his greed got the better of him.
A period of regretful running continued for some time before Vince saw Saren walking towards him. His face paled, he didn’t want to get his sibling involved and told him to run. That was the last thing he wanted. Vince knew that when Saren saw the wave of monsters behind him, he would get the idea in his head to follow him to his death!

Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. His first act is to issue notice that no ship is to be without crew nor sit in dock or reserve for longer then required for maintenance and upkeep. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course. Where else is a kid from the gutters going to find that kind of freedom in the service of His Majesty? A [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] 2021. Warnings: Second person is used in this work. Semi-Polished draft: Posted chapters are subject to revision as needed as things progress. Mild Profanity on occasion.
