Scene 1 - Mistakes Were Made
Ren cleared his throat when Nena helped treat his injuries with a tier two potion, while the scorching pain had made him pale with sweat. He could feel the healing properties of the potion taking effect immediately; the cooling sensation lessened the aching of his wounds. Ren sat back up on the cold ground before Jao offered his sleeping bag, which Ren thanked him for.
Nodding his head, Ren got comfortable, before speaking, “Thank you little sis, and thank you for the sleeping bag, Jao. Since it’ll take me a while to heal, I’ll tell you about that accursed thief and what she did to me! This is how the story goes, it all started when…”

Ren chuckled as he stretched his arms, “Heh, man that was crazy don’t ya think?! That was a ride if I do say so myself!”
Ren turned to his right to see a girl, shorter than him by a few inches, staring at him with curiosity. She had peach black eyes; medium-long spiky, green hair, sporting a blue-black tribal headband where a few locks of hair hung over with the rest pushed back.
The girl was dressed in blue clothes that fit tight on her small figure, a long black scarf that went all the way down to her small butt. On top of her blue clothes, she had a fresh-new leather vest, shoulder and knee pads which, he guessed, were both made out of black iron.
A dozen short daggers were placed diagonally from her shoulder to her waist, passing by her non-existent breasts. Her face was cute, the average type of cute that you couldn’t really find a fault too, yet nothing really stood out.
Ren noticed that the girl started to scan the room, naturally so did he. Soon, both their sights landed on the two bags in the center.

He gazed back at the girl and she suddenly grinned at him; not knowing why he placed his hand on the greater demon sword he had named, -Night Star- a few days earlier. Ren was ready for a fight! Even if it was little girl… With just this thought, he subconsciously lowered his guard a tad bit.
This was his first mistake.
The seeing girl Ren’s carelessness instantly took the inch and went a mile!
With the flash of her hand, a small gray object appeared in front of Ren, even with his guard lowered, his -Night Star- glimmered an icy coldness, cleaving the gray object in half.
This was his second mistake.
As soon as -Night Star- touched the gray object, a bright white light instantly flashed from inside, followed by a loud bang. This little object instantly blinded Ren completely, immobilizing his eyesight, making him drop his sword, shutting his eyes and covering his hearing leaving him defenseless.
The girl clad in blue didn’t miss a beat, as she ruthlessly stabbed a blade directly at Ren’s neck. At this point, Ren would have been dead, if not for the room’s restrictions of harming a person inside the said room. A blue wall of mana flashed, surrounding him on all sides and utterly blocking her attack.
“Ku!”, disdain filled the girl's cute voice and gaze.
She dropped her attack and ran full force toward the bags. With a quick motion of her right hand, she placed the two bags inside one of her rings and quickly ran towards the exit.
At this time, Ren’s senses came back from the shock of the gray object. Now, he was able to see, with double vision, that the girl had taken the bags. Anger filled his veins. That he had made such a mistake, underestimating his opponent!

Still a tad bit disoriented, Ren rushed towards the fleeing girl, to take back what was his!
This was his third mistake.
As soon as he left the room, he tripped a wire on the ground, which in turn tripped another string that was attached to it, all the way to the ceiling. There, a knife was planted, with the string attached to the back of the hilt, going through a distinctive hole.
When pulled, it released a small green object that was lightly attached to the outside of the entrance, coming at Ren like a green orb of death. Knowing the dangers of these little balls, he moved back inside by jumping back!
Who knew that this girl was so cunning!
Breathing a sigh of relief, Ren made his fourth mistake.
He thought that he was outside the range of that little green object. How wrong he was... Suddenly the green ball was pierced by a needle and exploded in Ren’s face, covering his body in a river of flames!
A blue shield appeared instantly around him. Who knew that even then he would be blown back, tumbling five meters! Ren let out a sigh of relief that he didn’t die! Cold sweat covered all over his body. No. He should have died!
‘What a terrifying girl’, He thought as he got up.
Even with the shield surrounding Ren’s body, he had gotten some bruises from hitting the ground from the kickback.
If Ren had realized that he almost died two times in such a small window of time, he probably wouldn’t have made his fifth mistake that day. He followed after the girl who had taken his bag. He’d be damned to be laughed at by his siblings, for being played around with by this little girl!

My Servant Is An Elf Knight From Another World
It was just like any other day, or so I thought at least. The birds were chirping up on trees, clouds were rolling by the bright blue sky and Elves were dumpster diving in the alleyway.

Trickster's Tale
Be careful when demanding reparations from gods. They rarely own up to their mistakes. Due to a goddess's shortsighted error, Perry finds himself transported to a distant Universe with new proportions and a different identity. Instead of cowering before the deity, he demands she opens a portal home or provides reparations for him and his bereaved family. Unfortunately, standing up for himself doesn't earn Perry respect. Instead, she curses him with cowardice, limiting his combat and magical potential. Little does the goddess know that nothing can stand in the way of Perry's sheer will. If brute strength and arcane might won't get him the justice he desires, wit and creativity will. Perry's first target? A goblin shaman. Then, the world. And so begins, the bard's ballad. Trickster's Tale (Book 1): Is That A Lute In Your Pocket will release on Kindle Unlimited on the 10th of May.Due to KU's exclusivity rules, I've had to take most of book 1 down.Book 1 Bard's Ballad takes place in the same extended Universe as my other story, The Houndsman. It's set on a distant 'disk', though. As a result, the magic system is unique in comparison and has a harder LitRPG system. While the story utilises stats, it doesn't take them seriously and occasionally makes fun of regular LitRPG mechanics.

The year is 1969. Yancy Lazarus—bluesman, gambler, future world-class mage and fix-it man—is just a dumb, unlucky kid serving with the 3rd Battalion 3rd Marines in Vietnam. With just a few weeks left to go until Yancy gets shipped back to the States, he’s just trying to keep his head down and avoid a body bag—no mean feat in Nam. But when his squad is tasked with conducting a routine patrol deep in enemy territory, everything goes to nine kinds of hell, and he quickly sees his chances at survival slipping away. When the radio operators start to pick up some funky, dirty ol’ blues all the way out in the backcountry, it’s a nice change of pace. At least until the men in Yancy’s squad start losing their minds, turning on each other with murderous intent as the music works its deadly power within them. Convinced it’s some kind of new psychological warfare initiative, the squad leader forces the men to push deeper and deeper into the Vietnamese jungle, obsessed with locating the music’s source. What they find, however, isn’t some new technology, but an ancient spirit awoken by the terrible war. Even worse, the music is changing Yancy too, awakening something buried inside of him. Only one thing is certain, nothing is ever going to be the same.See how it all began … *** PRAISE FOR SIREN SONG:Hunter's writing is as low-down, gritty, and insidious as the blues Yancy Lazarus loves. Just like the mysterious music drifting through the jungle toward Yancy's squad, Siren Song will get under your skin and sink its hooks into your mind. —eden Hudson, Author of Halo Bound (the Redneck Apocalypse series) *** Hey everyone, this is James Hunter. This story isn't a full length novel--its a novella length work (25K words), and is part of my Yancy Lazarus series. Its already free on Amazon, so I thought I'd post chapters here for the good folks of Royal Road.
