《Humanity's End》Chapter 13.3

:”If you have a shot then start shooting!” Was all Dawson said before he started firing his own rifle. The sound echoed through his radio for half a second before he released the send button.

Lets do this. The first giant four armed ape thing that Isaka targeted cried out as her rifle bucked. The impact sent the creature reeling back, clutching its arm where she had winged it. Come on, the things the size of a barn. You can do better than that Isaka.

She sighted the rifle on it again and this time the round hit square home directly in the creature's chest. An explosion of blood erupted out of its chest, but it seemed to only piss it off. The creature had four arms, was black haired, with silver down its back and down one side of its second pair of arms. It lifted its four arms and bellowed a challenge two whoever had stung it in the dark. This caused another of the eight apes that Isaka could see to rear up from its handlers chains, and beat its own chest.

If the sirens hadn’t gotten the firebase's attention, that was sure to wake people up, Isaka thought as she sighted in again. This time on the ape that had accepted the challenge. The two creatures roared and broke away from the chains that their captors had thought would keep them apart and charged straight for one another. The quiet running ATV’s that those chains had been attached too went with them, being lifted up and carried more like streamers than anchor and chain.

Peep let out a soft coo of delight as he saw what was going on through her vision. Ever since they had bonded, their connection had deepened and even though Isaka was three stories above him they could still hear and feel each other lightly.

Isaka’s rifle bucked again, this time hitting and crippling an arm of another ape, this one on the far side of the line. The shot had little real impact, it was too far away even for her beefy rifle. But, it had the effect she wanted. That creature reared up, and started attacking the ATV’s around it. Soon nearly half the enemy line was in chaos.

In the heart of the insanity she had caused, the firefight between the Rangers and whoever was attacking them was raging on. As she sighted in on the next target, an ear splitting howl ripped through the air. Through her night vision scope Isaka saw something that sent chills down her spine.

They moved through the tall grass like sharks on the prowl. She saw several of the enemy pulled under and ripped apart. Thrown blood and viscera and their quickly cut off screams the only sign that they had died. They moved faster than Isaka knew most people could, even at a dead run.

Werewolves, but instead of half wolf half man, these had brown and black spots like the hyena Isaka had seen prowling around the perimeter a few times. They were moving fast, straight towards the Rangers. Isaka tracked the lead hyena thing with her rifle, as it emerged from the grass and darted for the concrete wall she squeezed the trigger.

The boom from the rifle filled her ears. She re-sighted and found it was limping. One of its hind legs was limp and unmoving. But it still moved like a demon as it extended claws in its front legs and dragged itself up the concrete wall of the Science building the Rangers had set up shop in. She pulled the trigger again, this time the creature's brains splattered across the stone, and its body fell. Only for three more of the hyena things to emerge and begin climbing their way up.

“Dawson, dawson! You have arrived, up the side of the building!”

“What? What are you . . . Holy shit what is that thing?!” Rifle fire shifted as quickly as the radio went dead from the unknown shooters still stuck in the tall grass now desperately trying to raign in their brawling giant four armed apes, to the hyena men.

This isn’t going to go well, she thought as she sighted in on another. She pulled the trigger, and the creature collapsed off the concrete wall and down to the base of the building. She shifted to another target.

“You are trouble.” Isaka’s blood ran cold. She turned, dropping the heavy rifle as she rolled, and pulling the large .50 caliber revolver she had brought with her. The same one Sherif Barns had once called a “hand cannon”. She tried to bring the point of the pistol level with her target, only for a thick, wolf-man hand to encompass hers. She pulled the trigger, and several fingers exploded off the creature, but it just snarled more deeply, gripping her fingers more tightly and stopping the revolver from putting the next round into place.

“You will make a good prize for the hunt.” A brutal claw came up, all she saw was fur and claws, and then the world went black.
