Jessica looked through her status as quickly as she could. She had several things she could do to improve her chances of winning, but if the level difference between her opponent and herself was anywhere near the difference that Max had faced, she was going to be screwed unless she found something to give her the edge she needed.

Jessica skimmed through the familiar information before realizing about the only thing she had were the last two levels she had gained, but not assigned, and her class. She was about to open her class menu when she was interrupted.

“Is that a familiar on your shoulder?” the Magister woman asked, pointing to Pip who was curled protectively around Jessica’s shoulders. He had grown to the size of a medium-sized dog, but still weighed practically nothing. “You must have been very brave, or idiotic, to attempt such a thing before level one hundred.”

“Yeah, it uh. It was an accident. Why?” The woman smiled and just stared at Jessica with a wicked grin. She realized that this was just a distraction tactic. Jessica glanced at the clock. She had seven minutes left.

“Really?” the magister asked languidly. “I’d love to hear it.” Pip felt her frustration and reacted. He extended his neck out towards the woman and shrieked in a sound that was a mix of pissed off parrot and angry lizard. The woman cringed back, as the little dragon also let loose a tiny trickle of mental energy that amounted to little more than a warning to ‘stay away, or I’ll eat you.’

“I meant no disrespect, little brother. I am sure she is a worthy companion.” The woman bowed, and to Jessica’s surprise, walked back to her side of the dais. Jessica patted Peep on the head and stroked his neck in a familiar way he liked.

“That was weird.” Was all Jessica let herself say before she forced her mind back on the problem at hand.
