《Humanity's End》Chapter 2.2

Billys body fell on its back, his legs folded under him. The group of bikers all backed away, their hands raised. “You're going to get it now, chica!” One of the shorter men said. He was clearly hispanic by his accent. “Billy going to rip your legs off before he kills you.”
Isaka’s heart raced as she pointed the still loaded weapon at the other men; they backed off several steps, giving her room to breathe. She got control of her racing breathing through a technique her grandfather had taught her as a child. I might not buy into that eastern mumbo jumbo, but thank you grandpa for teaching me how to breathe properly. She thought as she took a couple of steps back from the body.
“The sheriff will be by in a minute. You all stay right where you are. I’ll not hesitate to put a bullet through your spine if you run. . .” Billy’s body twitched. His right arm shooting out. He grabbed a fist full of asphalt clean off the ground. No human should have been able to do that, machines had a hard time. Billy dragged himself onto his side and groaned in pain. Billy pulled himself to his knees, and started trying to get up.
“What the hell?! Stop moving, or I'll put three more right through your head!” Somehow the bastard had survived 3 rounds of 9mm. Two to the chest, and one straight to the forehead like her dad had taught her.
“What the hell?” Billy said, confused. “Who shot me?” He looked back at his bros and they all pointed at Isaka. “That doesn’t hurt like that unless it's real close. Damn girl that was point blank.” Billy's eyes met hers, as he tried to stand. Isaka knew something was different about his movements this time. He wasn’t just going to hurt her, he was going to try and kill her. He put one leg under him, and a metal crowbar appeared from out of nowhere in his hand. He raised it as he lunged for her and Isaka emptied the entire magazine into the man. She walked the weapon up until she put her last round into the same divet in his skull she had left previously.

Billy fell prone at her feet, inches away from her. Blood began to pool under him. The other men either scattered or stood silent, stunned, watching her reload. Which Isaka did as quickly as her racing heart, fumbling hands, and pumping adrenaline would allow.

Confused, shaking, and still trying to get the new magazine into the damn glock, Isaka sat on the curb. Sirens started in the distance, and the remaining thugs took that as their cue to run. She finally put the pistol and fresh mag down next to her, as she fought from going into shock. The sheriff's car pulled into the gas station, red and blue lights flashing.

Tower of Somnus
When humanity first encountered alien life, we were judged and found wanting. The Galactic Consensus interviewed our leaders and subjected us to a battery of psychological tests to determine our progress as a society. They found us to be selfish, wasteful, impulsive, and boorish neighbors. Earth was blockaded and our collective encounter with our extrasolar neighbors rapidly faded from memory. All they left behind was a hypercomm relay and a handful of subscriptions to a massively multiplayer game that participants played in their sleep. The Consensus said that it would let us interact with our neighbors in a controlled setting. That it would teach us to be better members of the galactic community. The megacorporations that controlled Earth ignored the game until they learned that the powers earned from clearing dungeons were just as real when day broke. Magic, supernatural abilities and rumors exploded from nothing and a subscription to The Tower of Somnus became a status symbol. Katherine ‘Kat’ Debs doesn’t have much, but it could be worse. Born in an arcology, she was assigned a job in the megacorporation that raised her almost as soon as she could work. Despite the stability of her corporate life, she wanted something more. A chance to claw her way up the rigid social and financial ladder to make something of herself. A chance that wouldn’t come naturally to someone as familiar with dark alleyways and the glint of steel as she was with office work and corporate niceties.Book One is up on Kindle Unlimited as of 7/6/22 - https://www.royalroad.com/amazon/B0B2X3L8H5
