《Song of the Phoenix》Chapter 49

Without answering, Baihe walked pass Fenglong, only to hear a light chuckle as he followed after her. Feeling vexed, she decided to ignore him for now; Baihe felt like whenever she was around this bipolar man, she seemed to lose her composure.

The other three followed Baihe and Fenglong from a distance. Inside her heart, Fei Fei was sneering in contempt over Baihe’s previous conduct. Not an ounce of noble bearing to be worthy of being the Huang family’s eldest miss. Such a disgrace! The woman was more suitable for peasant work!

But, when Fei Fei saw the way how Prince Zhao was staring after Baihe’s back, she felt her heart drop with a sense of danger over her unstable Crown Princess position. Sending Ming a look, her brother understood her intention and immediately intervened.

“Your Highness, if it weren’t for falling under Baihe’s ruthless scheme, you wouldn’t have ended up with a crippled arm. Don’t worry, once we arrive at the Mermaid Kingdom, they would surely give our Huang family face and cure you. In the meantime, we must be vigilant as to not fall under Baihe’s tricks again!” Ming urged.

Prince Zhao’s face turned dark and a cold glint appeared in his eyes. Although Ming’s words sounded polite, it was pushing all the blames to Baihe and reminding Prince Zhao of the special relationship the Huang family had with the mermaids.

“Humph! Isn’t that all thanks to your good sister!” Prince Zhao scoffed as he flung his wide sleeves and walked ahead, leaving the siblings dumbfounded.

Ming shot his sister an annoyed glance. “Behave yourself and create less trouble in the future; at least wait until you’re married into the imperial family!” Ming whispered as he quickly dragged Fei Fei to catch up with Prince Zhao.

Fei Fei felt she’d been wronged; with a belly full of grievance, she had nowhere to vent her anger and could only swallow the injustice in silence.

As time passed by, the traveling was starting to take a toll on the three people in the back, especially since they were used to the high pampered lifestyle and was unable to adjust to extreme circumstances without the protection of their spiritual energy.

Dehydrated and tired, Ming and Fei Fei glared at Baihe in the front. They been walking on foot for hours and had not come across any source of water. The dense forest was difficult to navigate and the two people leading didn’t seem to have any intention of stopping.

Another 30 minutes had passed before Baihe stopped. Seeing Baihe looking around at the trees, the displeasure stored inside Fei Fei finally exploded. “I say, did you get us lost or something? You dumb woman! If you don’t know the way, then don’t try to be smart by leading!”

Baihe ignored the barking from Fei Fei and continued to inspect her surroundings, but Fenglong’s eyes turned cold. Sensing the dangerous vibe coming from Fenglong, Fei Fei immediately ceased her barking and opted to glare silently at Baihe instead.

Looking around one full circle, Baihe spotted a tree which didn’t seem to pose any danger with creatures lurking up in the leaves and took out the spile from her bag to tap the tree with the wooden peg.

Water gently flowed out from the tree. The group was momentarily stunned as they watched Baihe and Fenglong take out their leather canteens to fill it with water. Prince Zhao was lost in deep thoughts as he observed those two before looking toward Ming and giving a light cough.

Upon hearing Prince Zhao’s cough, Ming snapped out of his daze and proceeded to do the same as Baihe. Following suit, Ming tapped another tree with his spile as he filled his group’s empty canteen, but his heart was unwilling to accept that his stupid half-sister, Huang Baihe, had such knowledge when she was nothing more than an uneducated trash.

Walking for hours, all of them were parched. After quenching their thirst, their mood vastly improved.

Suddenly, a deep croak was heard from nearby. Baihe followed the direction of the sound and saw a golden frog one tree away. Her face turned solemn as Baihe slowly backed away from the dangerous amphibian. The golden frog was poisonous and its poison glands were located beneath its skin. A mere touch could be fatal.

Retrieving the small knife from her bag, Baihe crouched low and waited. Just as Fei Fei and Ming was about to mock Baihe for being so caution over a frog, Fenglong leisurely said: “The two of you have brains the size of a peanut. It’s better if you remain quiet and don’t talk as to not further disgrace yourself.”

The siblings’ expression turned ugly, but before they could utter a word, a knife flew past them, accurately piercing through the golden frog’s head. Baihe ignored Fei Fei’s pale face and Ming’s thunderous expression as she casually strolled pass them.

Picking up the hilt of the knife, Baihe was careful not to touch the dead golden frog stuck to the blade. Secretly, she heaved a sigh of relief; it was good that the frog didn’t have any cultivation. Baihe hoped the restriction applied to all wild animals inside this forest.

As she walked back to a safe location, Baihe noticed Fenglong had already prepared a stack of dry wood and a tinder nest. Baihe restrained her smile; here she thought the bipolar man was going to cross his arms and do nothing.

Deep inside, Baihe was also surprised at how Fenglong seemed to understand what she was doing without her needing to explain. Bending down, Baihe took out the shard of glass inside the bag. Whoever was in charge of this formation had actually provided them with a shard of magnifying glass.

Aligning the center of the magnifying glass to the sun over the tinder nest, Baihe patiently waited. From the sideline, Fei Fei coldly observed Baihe with contempt; her lips curled up in disdain, but Fei Fei held in the mockery, waiting until Baihe thoroughly embarrass herself. Then, she’d add oil to fan the flame. After all, how could a piece of junk glass spark fire?

Throughout their journey, Ming had been on the lookout for flint because flint was used to spark fire. Oddly enough, he didn’t find any as if someone had deliberately removed all flint from the area. Ming believed Baihe’s earlier success to be a fluke; otherwise, why would the stupid girl think glass can spark fire?

Turning his head, Ming saw Prince Zhao engrossed in watching Baihe and his heart turned uneasy. Praying for Baihe’s failure, Ming wished Baihe would embarrass herself to bring down her standing in Prince Zhao’s heart and at the same time, lower her ego.

Upon seeing the look on her Brother Ming’s face, Fei Fei knew she was in for a good show. With a cold humph, the two siblings waited for Baihe to embarrass herself except Baihe once again did something out of their expectation.

An ember, the first sign of fire had actually appeared on the tinder nest!

Without hesitation, Baihe gently blew on the tinder nest until she got a sizable flame going. Gradually, she added the dry twigs, only dumping in the bigger pieces of dry wood when the fire was noticeably alive.

Carefully, Baihe exposed the golden frog to the heat. Eventually, after being exposed to the fire, the golden frog exuded a small amount of poisonous fluid.

Shock appeared in the siblings eyes, but Baihe had no time for those two. Taking out the arrows Fenglong had crafted for her, Baihe soaked the tips in the poisonous fluid before carefully storing them back inside the quiver. After thinking for a moment, Baihe also laced the knife used to kill the golden frog with the remaining poisonous fluid.
