《Song of the Phoenix》Chapter 48

Okay, truth be told, Baihe doesn’t give two shits about the destruction of the Feng Empire as long as it won’t negatively impact her livelihood. Whoever sits on the throne has nothing to do with a lawless person like her anyway.

When the trio saw the two departing silhouettes, a sense of unease filled them; they hastily carried their bags and followed after Baihe and Fenglong.

Other than the knife to maybe use as a weapon, some flimsy cloths to bandage wounds, and a leather canteen to store water, the other remaining items were literally junks in the trio’s eyes. Even the knife, cloths, and canteen were made from poor quality — completely unfitting of their noble status.

Prince Zhao, Fei Fei, and Ming scoffed at the low quality goods inside the bag and tilted their nose high up in the sky with disdain; however, Ming was perceptive enough to catch the abnormal light in Baihe’s eyes when the girl saw these junks and he silently gesticulated for his group to keep the bags.

Naturally, Ming had heard about the events pertaining to the Old Witch and how his sister Fei Fei was tricked by Baihe, dragging Prince Zhao down with her and causing the Crown Prince to end up with a crippled hand due to the Old Witch’s spell.

Unfortunately, none of the pills Ming had on him were capable of curing Prince Zhao’s crippled hand; the pills were only able to alleviate some painful symptoms, but as long as the three of them could safety arrive in the Mermaid Kingdom, the mermaids would definitely bestow some precious pills to treat the crippled hand based on the Huang family’s special relationship with them.

Subconsciously, after that disastrous event; the opinions of the siblings had slightly changed regarding Huang Baihe; they believed the woman might have found a scheming way out of this challenge as well, so there was no harm in following those two for now.

Baihe was alert to her surroundings and her ears had long picked up the sounds of fast approaching footsteps from behind. Baffled, Baihe couldn’t understand why those three pests were tracking their movements and following them, especially if the siblings hated her so much.

Maybe, they are following after Fenglong? After all, he is part of the imperial family and is Prince Zhao’s cousin.

Ignoring the three pests, Baihe and Fenglong hiked through the verdant forest with lush leaves. Along the way, Baihe picked up small branches to test the flexibility and durability of the wood. Finally, she found one that could snap back quickly in place and didn’t break all the way when she bent it in a c-shape; this proved it was suitable to use for bow crafting.

Although they were generously provided with a knife, bows and arrows were more effective as hunting tools because it could increase the distance between you and the prey. Since arriving in this weird cultivation world, Baihe had realized a crucial fact; the inhabitants capable of harnessing spiritual energy didn’t need to consume as much food to survive.

In fact, the higher the cultivation level, the less food was needed and the longer one could survive without eating and drinking; otherwise, those snobbish nobles would have long starved to death being trapped inside this wretched formation for so long.

Unfortunately, that nice perk was now taken away in this spiritual qi restriction zone, reducing all of them to ordinary humans inside this formation array. Without the spiritual energy sustaining her body, Baihe could slowly feel the familiar pang of hunger returning.

In her past life, Baihe could survive for over two months without food, but water was a different story. Most people would perish after three days without water; Baihe could survive up to 10 days. At least, her original body could. Baihe wasn’t willing to test the limit with a vessel belonging to a noble female even if Baihe had trained it since she took over.

Unless absolutely necessary, it was best to reduce the risk as much as possible and increase survival rate. For that, hunting tools were required. After Baihe found a sapling of the chosen tree suitable to make a bow, she began tapering it gradually with the knife.

When Fenglong saw those slender delicate hands doing heavy duty tasks, he unconsciously frowned. Although Fenglong understood what the woman was trying to do, for some reason, he couldn’t bear for those smooth as jade hands to be ruined under such rough labor. On his own accord, Fenglong immediately joined in to help.

A pleased smile surfaced on Baihe’s face when she saw Fenglong working on making a set of primitive weapons for himself. At least, the bipolar man wasn’t thinking of free-riding off her and leeching from her sweat and toil.

By the time Baihe was done with her simple bow stave, she was greatly startled when Fenglong handed her a bark tube quiver filled with numerous arrows and a bow cord made from plant fibers using the reverse wrap technique.

Surprised, Baihe secretly admired Fenglong’s fast handiwork as she lamented over how much physically weaker this body was compared to her original. It seemed more physical training was needed to hone this noble vessel. Seeing how Fenglong didn’t mind using his hands to work with nature despite his noble background, Baihe’s opinion of him went up a notch.

Inspecting the arrows and quiver, Baihe was very satisfied with this set of primitive weapon and quickly fastened the bow cord to her stave. Feeling grateful for Fenglong’s contribution in speeding up the time needed to be spent on crafting the weapons, a light smile entered Baihe’s eyes while a trace of warmth spread over her heart.

Although this bipolar man was born in a royal family, he actually got some basic survival skills in the wild unlike the three idiots standing there doing nothing besides staring at them the whole time.

It was just…why didn’t Fenglong craft one for himself?

With a light cough, Baihe tentatively asked: “Where is your bow and arrow?”

After Baihe asked that question, she immediately regretted it, especially when his lips nefariously hooked up. Seeing the mischievous glint shimmering in Fenglong’s dark eyes, a bad premonition surfaced in her heart. Sure enough, his response affirmed her suspicions.

“My bow and arrow?” Fenglong drawled out the question; “I gave the fruit of my labor to you, so you will be in charge of protecting benwang and hunting for food as repayment,” Fenglong replied with a lazy inflection in his voice.

Baihe’s lips twitched; her brows nearly jumped after his shameless demands. Hiring a mercenary bodyguard cost a lot more than just a set of primitive weapon okay?

For a moment, no one talked; even the three pests were stumped for words at how Fenglong could say it so self-righteously without feeling embarrassed. When Baihe saw the hypocritical reaction of Prince Zhao, Fei Fei, and Ming, she sneered in her heart and suddenly found everything to be quite funny.

As her gaze clashed with Fenglong’s dark sapphire eyes, she realized the humor in his eyes got deeper. Baihe knew without a doubt, this man was more than capable of surviving out here alone by himself, but he was still shameless enough to push everything to her. Hateful!
