《Song of the Phoenix》Chapter 45

Baihe stared straight into his bewitching sapphire orbs, deep as the vast sky — dark and bottomless. Unable to maintain eye contact without feeling flustered at the moment, she tilted her head downward to hide her emotions.
“Am I disposable to you?” Fenglong asked in a near whisper.
His question caught Baihe off guard and she lifted her head up in confusion. If she weren’t so close to him, she wouldn’t have been able to hear what he’d just asked. After a brief moment of contemplation, understanding crossed her eyes.
Did he think she considered him as a cannon fodder? Amused, Baihe found it funny that this bipolar man was still brooding over the issue; but when she seriously thought about his question, the answer Baihe derived at scared her shitless.
No, he was not disposable to her.
In fact, when Fenglong was around, time and time again, Baihe had sat down to mediate without hesitation, leaving her back open and vulnerable to him. At this realization, Baihe felt an incoming crisis. Either she was losing her edge or something was changing within her; but change can be a scary thing.
This time, when Baihe backed away, Fenglong had surprisingly let her go. She didn’t give him an answer, but he already knew from reading her eyes. Fenglong heaved a sigh of relief. The thought of him being unimportant to her, how she may remain indifferent and unperturbed whether he was to live or die, had greatly plagued his mind.
Joy flickered in his eyes briefly before returning to normalcy; inside, Fenglong was happy with her response but also deeply confused. When had he started to place so much importance on what she thought of him?
Fenglong watched Baihe make a beeline to the corpse of the fallen chimera and then squatted down with her back turned to him. The corner of his lips curled up demonically; the woman was staring at the dead chimera like it was the most fascinating thing in the world, but her slight fidgeting movements gave it away that she wasn’t as unaffected as she appeared to be.

Baihe wanted to curse; she needed some space to internally work things through, but even with the distance between them, she could still feel his scorching gaze burning a hole through the back of her head. A bit dejected with herself, Baihe decided to keep her hands busy and began to extract the crystal core inside the dead chimera while her mind was speed racing at three hundred miles per an hour through her latest dilemma.
Okay, so she was attracted to him; no big deal. Just fuck him then move on.
In her old world, plenty of people succumb to lust and have one-night stands; numerous casual, messy relationships happen between people. She was still human, with all the right body parts and apparently for the first time in both lifetimes, her healthy sex drive finally showed itself.
Completely normal; no fucking need to freak out here. Sex didn’t always entitle love; it could be just pure lust. No strings attached; not like she had to marry the guy.
After taking all the pros and cons into consideration, Baihe finally settled on banging the bipolar man until he can’t tell left from right in order to evict the raging hormones out of her system. There was just one problem: pregnancy prevention.
Sex was still okay. Baby was not. Her a mother? What a joke! That was as inconceivable as if the sun suddenly rose from the west.
After thinking for a while, Baihe recalled how proficient the mermaids were in pills and medicine. Surely, they must have a solution?
By now, Baihe had finished extracting the crystal core from the chimera. In one of the manuals she read, Baihe learned that crystal cores were extremely precious because they contain the base cultivation essence of magical beasts and can be consumed by another beast or used in apothecary to refine pills for strength improvement.

Glancing down at the huge crystal core in her hand, Baihe had a good feeling she looted a high grade beast core with strong potency. After all, it did come from a Nascent Soul Stage 5 Chimera.
Since she had no innate talent for pill refinement, Baihe decided to feed the chimera crystal core to the phoenix instead when Qian wakes up. It was just…this shit was the size of a basketball, where the hell was she supposed to pocket it? Carrying it around in both hands wasn’t feasible.
Suddenly, the weight of chimera crystal core left her hands; Fenglong took it from her and the next moment it disappeared into thin air. With her innate gift of perception, Baihe noticed a rare interspatial ring adorned with exquisite sapphire gems around his finger — chic and refined.
The manual had included a small section regarding this rare object; it was a magical space-dimension ring where the owner can store items inside an alternative space and retrieve them at will. Not only were they difficult to obtain, all of them require a blood contract.
Baihe’s lips hooked up; this bipolar man really wasn’t simple. From one glance, she could tell his interspatial ring was top notch quality, meaning the storage space inside must be vast.
Earlier, Baihe had realized Fenglong’s offensive attacks were less than half-baked against the chimera, but that alone was capable of subduing the beast long enough to give her ample time in identifying its weakness. Why was he hiding his true strength?
At once, Baihe stopped that train of thought. Everyone has their secrets and his closet of skeletons were none of her business. All Baihe cared about was how he volunteered to be a human portable storage device for her. Baihe’s gut feeling told her that this man wouldn’t covet her chimera crystal core; so she wasn’t afraid of leaving it with him temporarily.
Looking around, Baihe spotted a teleportation array glowing near the now closed off entrance; preparing to head toward their next challenge, she stepped forward but was pulled back by Fenglong.
The next moment, something soft was thrown at her; by reflex, Baihe reached out and easily caught the item. It was a new set of robe with rich royal blue fabric and embroidered with black, blue, and silver threads. With fine needlework, there were blooming blue lilies so lifelike as if they were growing from the hems of the dress.
Besides the clothes, Fenglong also handed over a pair of comfortable shoes and some women toiletries from his interspatial ring; Bemused, Baihe arched an eyebrow at him. She really couldn’t link this with his normal image. If Baihe weren’t seeing this with her own eyes, even if you beat her to death, she wouldn’t believe it.
Somehow, Baihe had expected him to be embarrassed, or at least sheepish like when a man was caught red-handed by a circle of friends for helping their woman buy sanitary pads; but Fenglong confidently met her eyes, not a ripple could be seen in his vivid blue orbs nor a tinge of red on his face.
Baihe’s lips twitched when she saw his upright noble posture and laid-back attitude; however, in her old life, she learned the hard way that nothing in the world was truly for free. Not to mention that this man was completely two-faced and shameless!
