《Song of the Phoenix》Chapter 44

A sense of panic gripped Fenglong’s heart. “During the first time, did you not say the divine fire essence will only benefit her?”
Although Fenglong was communicating with Heihuo inside his mind, the ancient divine beast was able to sense the coldness radiating from Fenglong’s tone as well as the hidden concern he had for the human girl.
Deeply amused, Heihuo released a haughty chortle as the venerable divine beast replied: “Your woman will be fine. Divine elemental essence is extremely pure and volatile and can greatly improve one’s cultivation, but you’ll need to have an affinity with the respective elements; however, the body of a human is unable to cope with it and will end up exploding instead. The reason your woman hasn’t exploded is because of the phoenix. The young bird is absorbing the divine essence through the girl and mitigating the harmful effects. Thus, as long as your woman possesses the phoenix, the divine fire essence will only be beneficial to her.”
Unknowingly, the crease between Fenglong’s brows lessened as his expression turned much better after hearing “your woman” multiple times; but the sly Heihuo gauged all of these changes. In a low conspiratorial timbre, Heihuo casually slipped a remark. “Her phoenix will be waking up shortly and… he can take on a human form once two more seals are released.”
Fenglong underwent another facial expression change while Heihuo watched with interest. Ever since this lad met the girl, the block of ice had shifted through numerous phases. It was like watching a child discovering new emotions for the first time. Finally, Heihuo no longer had to die from boredom by always seeing the same indifferent face from this reticent human.
Outwardly, Fenglong had restored to tranquility as if he’d never heard the insinuation masked behind those words, but Heihuo was languidly swimming inside a sea of vinegar produced by Fenglong’s jealousy.
“The one behind this phenomenon is the Mermaid King?” Fenglong asked to distract himself from the sour feeling he was experiencing.

“No, the mermaids are only responsible for setting up this formation array. I can sense the residue left behind by a powerful divine entity, so it must be sealed by someone from the heavenly realm. After all, it’s not like the mermaids have no interactions with those from the upper realm,” Heihuo answered.
After a brief moment, Heihuo’s powerful voice echoed inside Fenglong’s head once more. “Do not arbitrarily use my full power or reveal your true strength. We are so close to assembling the last two missing soul fragments. We cannot afford to make a mistake at this point,” Heihuo warned before closing his eyes and withdrawing to mediate inside Fenglong’s space.
Within the all encompassing chamber, silence fell again. Fenglong was quiet as he studied Baihe. When his eyes landed on her frizzy puffed up Afro hair, his lips hooked up into a devious smile. Even with her black smeared face, unkempt hair and dirty attire, Fenglong found her enchanting — more beautiful than any of the powder face noble ladies or the imperial consorts from the Emperor’s inner harem.
This was also the first time he had seriously paid attention to any woman since Fenglong abhorred them in general, but when it came to this extremely assertive woman in front of him, not an ounce of disgust existed. Instead, he felt a sense of longing, an invisible attachment that chained him to her. He knew she was different — special even, but could not define the exact reason why.
It was almost a tangible feeling, except Fenglong was unable to grasp it. He, who prided himself in his perception and intelligence, was incapable of understanding this foreign feeling.
His dark sapphire eyes shifted to the grayish black liquid layered with a one inch thick smog. It was making a trail toward the unsuspecting Baihe. This was the melted stream of lead left behind by the chimera, highly toxic. At that time, Fenglong was pleasantly surprised by the tactic Baihe deployed. No one would have known that the stone pillars were mixed with lead.

The lead must had been modified to be toxic enough to poison and suffocate the chimera. With a wave of his hand, a beam of black light cracked the structure above at a precise position. The rocks tumbled downward and enclosed Baihe inside a circular wall, blocking the meandering liquid steam of toxic lead.
♦
Four days later, Baihe opened her eyes with a light smile. The cultivation process this time was a lot faster and she successfully made a breakthrough from Mid Dao Stage 5 to Late Dao Stage 5. A full rank increase! Those crimson red essence was truly magical and effective.
That her power would increase so rapidly was beyond her imagination; Baihe wished she could stay here and dig up more of these weird reddish essence, but she knew there was only a limited amount and everything available had been sucked dry by her.
While Baihe was busy probing Qian inside her space to check if there was any new update, a strong hand encircled her waist and lifted her up from within the enclosed rocky walls. Less than a breath of time, familiar warm lips seared hers and a wicked tongue pried its way inside her mouth.
His tongue began to invade and conquer; with a befuddled mind, Baihe fought back with her own tongue in equal force. Soon, it was like a battlefield between two lovers, each striving for dominance. The sensation felt electrifying with a touch of urgency.
It was anything but gentle. It was hard, rough, and intense. As if they were going to war with one another; as if they were trying to prove something; as if they were fighting each other but also themselves at the same time.
Since long ago, Baihe was careful when it came to her heart. So careful, that she carved it out and buried it six feet under. Assassins don’t need a heart — their only job was to kill. She eliminated any weakness that could drag her down, removed all attachments that could make her bleed, and dimmed every single spark that could burn her.
Except, nothing could douse this flame. Instead, it began to burn, brighter and fiercer each time she interacted with Fenglong. Now, the fire was spreading throughout her body.
Was it just lust? Hormones? Infatuation?
Disappointed in herself and angry at the man responsible, she poured her confusion into their kiss. Through their intimacy, there was frustration and vexation from both parties.
One of his hands was on the back of her head, keeping her in place while the other was still on her waist, but now it began to wander wantonly. Traveling upward over her curves, it fully covered one of her breasts and gave it a squeeze. The action caused her nerves to go haywire and the hard rod pressed against her jolted Baihe back to reality.
She was smeared black all over with soot and dirt; her robe tattered and hair filthy. Baihe knew better than anyone that at this moment, she resembled more of a beggar on the streets than an attractive woman. Yet, this crazy bipolar man acted as if he wanted to eat her alive.
Feeling embarrassed all of a sudden, Baihe ended their kiss and tried to push him away, but Fenglong held her in place. With a flushed face and erratic heart, Baihe glanced at the troublesome, but devilishly handsome man with jet black hair hanging loosely down his broad shoulders.

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.

The Priest of Genes
Meet Seth, acolyte in the Church of Virtue. He’ll be a Priest like his father soon, he just knows it. Sure he didn’t inherit his mother’s preaching power, but he doesn’t mind being the secondary priest at whatever temple he is assigned to. Just as long as he has a library. Meet this genetics textbook. Hmm, that doesn’t belong here. It must have come from somewhere far away, I guess something happened to its owner. I’m sure a studious young man who likes healing could go far with this information, whether he wants to or not. This is my first time really writing anything, so I hope you like it! Please let me know if I make any mistakes; I have a new R&D tech job at a genomics company, so I probably don’t edit as much as some people. I’m shooting for two thousand-ish word chapters released on Sundays, since none of the webnovels I read ever seem to update that day. Underserved Market! Genre is fantasy, possibly progression fantasy. Maybe a tiny bit litRPG if you wait a while and squint really hard, but that’s the most I’m prepared to claim. Hedged my bets on the content warnings, nothing that bad. Cover art from A. W. Gelman

This is avatar the last airbender fanfiction. I do not own any character except my original characters. The story starts about 6-years before the iceberg breaking. The main character is an earth bender how will not use lava or metal bending at all. No other elements will be learned by him. I am using Grammarly with this work. I am at least planning to write the book earth fully. It will take time. Rest you can find by reading. Even harsh comments are welcome. It is nothing new to me. I hope you will find at least something interesting here. As you can see, I can not draw. If someone is willing to draw, then I am more than happy to receive it.
