《Song of the Phoenix》Chapter 4

The only person left behind was her personal maid, the same young girl who sincerely cried on her behalf. On account of the previous owner’s memories, this maid was named Xiao Bao and was the only one in the Huang’s household who treated her well and harbored no ill intention toward her. She was also loyal to Huang Baihe, but as an assassin, trust and loyalty was a sacred commodity that didn’t exist in her previous lifestyle.

For the time being, the maid posed no threat, so Baihe ignored Xiao Bao’s bewildered look as she gathered all the valuable loot. Jewelry and hairpins would be too dangerous to pawn off since it could be traced back to her, especially if all of them were custom made for nobles.

Without hesitation, she scooped them up and dumped them all into the burning coffin. Her clear eyes darted to the multiple pouches of heavy coins. Inspecting the amount inside, Baihe reckoned it’d be enough to ensure her lifestyle for a while, but she wasn’t stupid enough to pocket all the money.

“Give me your money pouch.” Her sudden command jolted Xiao Bao out of her silly daze.

“Miss…ar—are you a ghost or a human?” Xiao Bao stuttered.

Baihe looked at her lazily before replying nonchalantly, “Why don’t you come over and see for yourself? But first… throw me your money pouch.”

After a moment of hesitation, Xiao Bao threw her tattered money pouch over, which Baihe caught effortlessly. For some reason, she couldn’t help but feel that something was different with her Miss. Yet, she couldn’t exactly wrap her fingers around what was off. Only that now, each word and command her Miss issued was laced with authority behind them, making it hard for others to resist.

Puffing up her courage, she walked over to Baihe, who continued to ignore the maid. With an inward sigh, Baihe flipped the empty money pouch upside down.

Penniless! Completely empty!

This was exactly what she was afraid of! It was good Baihe had the foresight to make those scoundrels leave behind their valuables; otherwise, she’d be no different from a destitute beggar by now!

Sigh, so much for being the eldest daughter of the Huang’s general household…

Quickly, Baihe began to pour out all the currencies from the pouches she received. From time to time, she felt Xiao Bao’s small hand touching her to confirm that she was the real deal and more than a few times already, she heard small shouts of “ouch” as her maid pinched herself to check if she was still dreaming.

Continuing to ignore Xiao Bao, she focused on the task at hand. Baihe took a bit of coin from each pile, including some money notes, but also made sure to leave some behind. She wasn’t stupid — once those people calmed down, they’d suspect something was amiss and would return here for further investigation.

Her current strength was no match for martial practitioners. She had already taught them a small lesson and received a little compensation in return. But, if they were ever to find out the truth, Baihe had no doubts she’d be in for a handful. She’d rather spend her time and energy on training this weak body.

Still, the corner of her lips couldn’t help curving slightly upward, knowing how all those snobbish, noble people got swindled by her — a girl labeled as the good-for-nothing trash.

Baihe stopped once the tattered money pouch was filled to the brim. For all the remaining coins and money notes, she dumped them into the coffin, allowing them to burn along with the accessories. She caught those scoundrels by surprise and used their momentary weakness of superstitious nature against them, but it won’t be long until they’d start wondering why a ghost would want real money or even need such valuables for. After all, you only burn joss money for the dead.

The reason why she removed all the money from the pouches and lumped them together was to make it impossible for those people to calculate if any was missing. Hence, why she also left behind some of the money notes for evidence, even though she really wanted to pocket every last sheet.

Right now, only a scapegoat was missing from the equation. Baihe searched the memories of the previous owner, trying to find a suitable candidate.

Target found!

The fastest and most convenient scapegoat would be Fei Fei’s head maid. The maid had similar height and body structure closest to hers. Most importantly, Baihe had a score to settle with her. From all the memories given to her by the original Huang Baihe, she had lost count of how many times the head maid had tortured this body.

Time was of the essence, Baihe quickened her pace as she sneaked into Fei Fei’s courtyard in the quiet night. As a former assassin from her previous life, masking her presence wasn’t that hard.

The problem was killing the head maid. Currently, this body she possessed was too weak and fragile. Even if she knew how to execute the moves, the body might not be able to perform it due to lack of strength. Hurried footsteps were heard from a short distance. Baihe hid behind the fake rock garden in the courtyard and watched the approaching figure of a maid from the small cracks.

She recognized her as part of Fei Fei’s entourage — another lackey under the management of the head maid. The only difference was, this maid was comparatively weaker than the rest of the group and yet, she still never missed the opportunity to trample the previous Huang Baihe under her feet.

The gears in Baihe’s mind began to rotate. Due to lack of information, she didn’t understand the divisions or levels of cultivation in this realm; however, using her best judgment, Baihe believed this maid was only slightly stronger than a normal person with no cultivation and a hell lot easier to deal with than the head maid — at least for now. With that thought in mind, she made her move.

The young maid was clueless of the danger lurking close-by; her head was facing downward, distracted by something plaguing her mind. In the next second, all thoughts were cut off by the tight arm locked around her neck. She didn’t even get to see the killer before the person behind her ruthlessly snapped her neck. A sharp pain pierced through her and she tried to struggled, but to no avail. After the fourth snap of her neck, she no longer felt anything.

Baihe looked at the dead maid in her arms, a mocking smile appeared at the corner of her mouth.

What a joke!

If any of her old acquaintances saw how the infamous assassin needed to snap a person’s neck FOUR times before the victim finally died, she’d die from shame!

Without wasting any more precious time, Baihe pulled the dead corpse behind the fake rock garden and stripped the maid naked, swapping their clothes, including all accessories. After making sure everything was in place, she dragged the body of the deceased maid back to the location of the coffin, making sure to keep themselves hidden. Thankfully, the dark night provided her with some great extra coverage.
