Chapter 31 - Fifth Mission
…
The next morning at the crime scene…
The vicinity was isolated by cordon tape while the shops were not allowed to open and had to evacuate to facilitate investigations going on.
A group from Shadow Bureau crowded near the two corpses with a coroner inspecting the cause of death, although it was pretty obvious as the two daggers were still lodged in their throats.
“Coroner Larry, can you try and determine the events that happened prior to Jake Brown and Aaron Lake’s deaths?”
A high-ranking member from the group stood out and asked.
“I’ll try, you know my ability. I need some time.”
The coroner replied and used his ‘Time Before Death’ ability that he named himself.
The ‘Time Before Death’ was a skill that could rewind the Essences Of Evolution from a corpse that had died within the past twenty four hours to figure out some traces.
The ability contained slight traces of the Law Of Time, but it was minimal, that was why the coroner needed at least half an hour to detect the traces of Essence Of Evolution that was in their bodies.
A short while later, the coroner from Shadow Bureau frowned with his eyes still shut, he explained while his investigation was still going on.
“It seems like the Church Of Chaos is declaring their comeback… But why now?”
“What did you find out? I mean, the daggers were already engraved with their insignias.”
The member said as he looked at the two daggers.
“I feel the traces of chaotic Essence Of Evolution, it’s like it's still lodged inside the daggers! It just feels like how the Chur- Wait, no! I-It can’t be!!! IT’S A TRAP, RUN!”
Coroner Larry screamed in a voice full of panic all of a sudden as he tried to warn his group, as if he detected something horrifying.

Unfortunately, it was too late.
As the moment Coroner Larry interacted with the energy lodged inside the daggers that were in the throat of Jake Brown, it had triggered something that would react violently when in contact with Essence Of Evolution.
BOOOOOOM!
The alleyway instantly collapsed with the buildings beside it having holes blown into the building.
Debris and dust particles flew everywhere, along with the blood splattered on the ground and walls.
No one from the group survived.
The only fortunate thing was that they had isolated the area and no pedestrians were harmed, but no one had remained to witness the traumatizing scene.
“Sir, Sir! Bad news!”
Vice General Anthony was in a meeting room with members from the government discussing the use of Bio-Cores replacing electricity when a member from the Shadow Bureau barged in and shouted harrowingly.
“What is it, John? Can’t you see that I’m in a meeting?”
Although Anthony frowned while saying it, he knew his subordinates would not behave so erratically without any proper reason, he had a sense of foreboding.
John replied in an urgent tone,
“We lost all contact with the group from Crime Unit deployed to investigate the crime scene of Jake Brown and Aaron Lake!”.
“Apologies for interrupting the meeting, but I need to have a few words with my subordinate, if you’ll excuse me.”
Vice General Anthony informed the members from the government as he exited the room quickly with a frown on his face and continued on with their conversation.
“John, what do you mean lost all contact? They are at least Genelock Phased Evolvers. How do you lose contact with all of them?”
“Sir! The GPS and satellite phones they were carrying were all disconnected instantly, I suspect an EMP was detonated!”

Even John did not know that the group were all dead, as the first thing he suspected was an EMP detonating and disabling their electronic devices, they were strong enough for the common villains but this was serious news as EMPs would only be used by crime organizations, cults and terrorist groups.
“An EMP? Is there some sort of conspiracy going on? Find out more information immediately! I’m afraid it’s a planned terrorist attack.”
Anthony ordered his subordinate to investigate more when another member ran towards him with a panicky face and reported news that made him grit his teeth.
“Sir! It’s f*cking bad, someone called to inform of a huge explosion near the location that the Crime Unit group was at, and when the informant went to look at it out of curiosity from the loud sound of explosion, he saw blood and body parts splattered everywhere with no one from our Shadow Bureau to be seen! O-oh my lord!”
Bang!
A deep dent in the steel wall was punched out of pure frustration by Anthony as he shouted in anger.
“F*CK, I’LL GO THERE MYSELF! Inform the people inside that the meeting is postponed till further notice!”
He stormed off in fury and speed worthy of an Ascended as the government members in the meeting room were startled by the loud noise from Anthony’s punch and the dent that appeared began to whisper to each other.

Fragments of Glass
before the 1939-1945 War, most churches in England had stained glass windows, but despite local people's best efforts many of these windows were smashed in the bombing. What could be repaired was repaired, but in many churches all they could do was reassemble the remaining fragments randomly, with extra bits of clear glass added to eke them out to fill the windows. That is what I imagined for my collection of short stories: fragments of stained glass, bits of robe, bits of faces, all sorts of odds and ends randomly stuck together. And with quite a lot of clear fragments among the coloured ones. Just broken pieces of stories that anyone can look through.
