Chapter 1.9: ‘Prison Break’

Year: 2483 Month: June 4th

Kai presses send on the message. It was time. He, Kent and Nyx exit the apartment and make their way down the street to the agreed meeting location. They arrive to the alleyway two streets down and greet the men wating for them. Jonathon and Owen nod their heads and gesture to the others behind them. Apollo, Cayde and Harrison all wave from within a dark grey van. Kai waves back, smiling. Jonathon and Owen chuckle and hand Kai a small set of papers, they then turn and climb into the front seats of the van. Kai inspects the papers, realising that they were detailed plans of what route they were going to take and who is going to be positioned where. He hands them to Kent and nods. Kent skims through them, mumbling to himself and taking mental notes. Kai gently takes Nyx’s wrist and leads her to the back of the van. They pull open the doors and clamber inside. Harrison looks Nyx up and down and snickers, she cowers away from his gaze and tugs at Kai’s sleeve.

‘’This girl is going to help?’’ Harrison remarks, raising an eyebrow.

‘’She’s stronger than you think.’’ Kai argues.

‘’If you say so, boss.’’

Kai ignores Harrisons antics and takes a seat next to Cayde. Kent climbs inside and seats next to Apollo, still reading the papers. Nyx closes the van doors and sits down next to Kai. Jonathon turns around and passes a briefcase back to Kent.

‘’You’re unpowered right? Take this. Very good weapon. Help you in a pinch.’’

Kent opens the briefcase and grins in excitement. Kai strains his neck to see but Kent closes the case before he can make out what it was. Jonathon pats Owen on the shoulder and starts the engine. Kai and the others put on their seatbelts. Jonathon grins.

‘’Let’s make some noise.’’

12 miles north of London, they pull over and prepare to walk the last three miles to the prison. Equipping all black clothing and relatively high tech earpieces to communicate provided by Jonathon and Owen, they siphon into three separate groups and head in accordance with the plan.

Kai breathes heavily as he treads through the forest towards their designated point. His group consisted of himself, Nyx and Owen. The plan was for Jonathon and Harrison to cause a breach on the west side of the prison whilst Kai’s team stealthily entered the east side. Apollo, Cayde and Kent’s job was to stay on standby for immediate support. From there, Kai’s team were to use Owen’s power to interrogate a guard to locate an exact path to the objective’s prison cell and break him out. It was mostly fool proof.

Kai reaches the edge of the forest and takes a deep breath, according to Jonathon, they should only be a few hundred metres away from the prison.

Kai presses a button on his earpiece and quietly contacts the other teams.

‘’This is team A, closing in on the east side now.’’

Jonathon’s voice replies.

‘’Roger that, ready when you are.’’

Kai motions to Owen and Nyx and they nod in confirmation. He turns and starts to climb the hill in front of them. As he reaches the top, Kai is taken aback by the sight before him. A massive ditch spread out wider than about three football fields and was deeper than any ravine he had ever seen. In the centre, there was a large steel building with several concrete walls surrounding it. Each corner was accompanied by a towering, metallic, humanoid figure that almost looked like an inactive Mech out of a movie or tv series. Owen slides down the crater without saying a word. Kai jumps at this and almost shouts at him. Containing his frustration Kai nods to Nyx and slides down as well. As they reach the bottom they take refuge behind a large piece of rubble and Kai contacts the others once more.

‘’This is team A, we are in place. All plans are a go, I repeat all plans are a go.’’

‘’Copy that, good luck teams.’’

A large explosion makes Nyx and Kai jump out of their skin. Sirens sound and giant spotlights activate, scanning the surrounding area. The giant mechs spring to life, all groaning as if they had not been used in decades. Kai gulps in fear and starts to shake, only just capturing the magnitude of the situation. This was a prison designed for keeping power enabled inside of it. If they mess up, there was a low chance of them escaping. Over the comms, Kai hears Harrison let out a command.

‘’Shit. There is no chance for stealth anymore! We are taking this prison by force, all teams storm the northern side. That’s an order.’’

Kai curses and turns to Nyx.

‘’Listen, I know it’s scary but I need you to create a wall of ice between us and the prison as we run ok?’’

Nyx clenches her fists and nods. Kai grins and gives a thumbs up to Owen. Nyx activates her ability and slams her hands onto the ground, as she does so a colossal wave of ice erupts out of the ground towards the prison, collapsing one of the walls and nocking one of the mechs off balance.

‘’NOW!’’ Kai shouts. They all break into a sprint and Nyx keeps up a shaky but effective ice wall between them, deflecting the rain of bullets from the guards. One of the mechs climb over the wall and cuts them off, its metal parts screeching in anger. Kai grits his teeth and activates his power, once again the mask takes over his body, giving him incredible anger and energy. He dashes forward and builds up energy into his right hand. As the energy grew, the flames did as well. The mech screeches and slams its fist downwards towards Kai, he avoids it and climbs up onto the mech, rushing towards the its head. The mech lifts its other arm and attempts swatting Kai off only to miss. Kai lets out a demonic roar and slams his right fist into the mechs head, all the energy being released in one punch. The shockwave of energy causes the mechs head to implode and partially disintegrate. Kai jumps off the mech and lands safely into a combat roll next to Nyx and Owen. As they reach the north side, they spot Jonathon stood still, catching every bullet the guards fired with his ability and sending them back. Harrison stood behind him, amazed by this show of power. They spot Kai and nod to one another. Harrison equips his own mask and rushes towards the prison, Jonathon nods to Kai and points towards Harrison. Kai reads the gesture and follows him. Nyx follows closely behind Kai, keeping an ice cover around her to prevent getting shot. Owen splits off and stays with Jonathon.

Kai, Harrison and Nyx reach the prison wall and Kai punches through it as if it were paper.

‘’Hahaha, now THIS is fun!’’ The voice echoed in Kai’s mind once more, and Kai couldn’t help but agree. He had never felt so much power in his life before. He felt unstoppable. Harrison swiftly takes out guard after guard, expertly disarming them and knocking them unconscious. Another mech appears from around the corner and Nyx drops to the floor, sending out another wave of ice and freezing the legs of the mech. Kai grins inside his mask, they could do this. As they reach the walls of the main prison, Kai lifts both of his hands above his head and slams them onto the wall, sending out a wave of the dark flame, bursting a hole into the steel reinforcements. They all rush inside and Nyx seals the hole with a thick barrier of ice. She deactivates her ability and sinks onto the floor, exhausted. Kai scans the space around them and concludes that is some sort of main hallway. It was dimly lit and had multiple routes off with barely any signs. Kai nods to Harrison.

‘’You take right, I’ll take left.’’ His voice boomed down the hallways. Harrison nods and sprints down the right hallway. Nyx stands up and wipes her forehead.

‘’Let’s go.’’ She exclaims.

She and Kai rush down the left hallway, hoping to spend as little time as possible in the building. They turn around a corner to see a large group of guards discussing something outside what seemed like a large vault. One of them spots Kai and Nyx and opens fire on them, Nyx tries to put up an ice wall but is too slow. A few bullets wedge themselves into Nyx’s chest and she gets hurled backwards by the force. Kai freezes. Nyx starts to scream at the pain and coughs up blood. Kai feels veins start to boil. He hears the voice one more.

‘’You care about her right? They just hurt her didn’t they?’’

Kai grits his teeth and feels the flames start to burn hotter.

‘’Let out your anger. Kill them. They deserve it’’

Kai’s breaths grow heavier and he feels his body grow in size. The flames around his hands spread up to his shoulders and the fiery claws vanish. Suddenly he sees the dark flames start to form in the air in front of him, they contort and stretch into a shape so new, yet so familiar to him. Black rock forms a hilt, and the flames form a deadly blade. The voice commands him once more.

‘’Take the weapon. Slash. Them. Down.’’

Kai responds, his voice full of malice.

‘’Gladly’’

He grasps the sword and feels it connect to him through his power. He turns towards the guards and dashes towards them, cutting down three of them in an instant. The rest of the guards scream and shoot at Kai. The bullets are consumed by the flames as they near and fuel Kai’s anger, he grabs another guard by the throat and crushes it with ease. He tosses them to the side and then slams another into the wall. The remaining guards start to beg for their lives, some grovelling, others simply praying. Kai didn’t care. They all deserved to die. In a few seconds there were no guards left. Kai stood in front of the vault filled with satisfaction. He was no longer afraid. He suddenly notices Apollo out of the corner of his eye, she stood with her hands over her mouth, her eyes wide with horror. Kent was clutching the briefcase, his face full of shock. Cayde was crouched over Nyx almost throwing up as he tried to heal her. Kai relaxes his shoulders, Nyx was safe. He turned to the vault and slashed it with his sword. It cut like a hot knife through butter and Kai entered with ease. Inside there was a small cage. Inside the cage was a small rubber chair with a person strapped to it. On Kai’s approach they looked up with a grin.

‘’So I take it you are Kai?’’ Their voice was deep and husky. ‘’Pleasure working with you.’’
