《Hollow Moon》Chapter 7.3 Nyssa

Nyssa:

It was fortunate that the two charging towards Wolfgang were the twins that had done most of the talking back at the markets. Out of the four ogres, the twins were the smallest. If it were the other two, he would be hard pressed getting out of this confrontation alive. As it was, he was outmatched with their two weapons to his nothing.

Wolfgang was swearing madly. Nyssa was impressed with his creativity. Living for hundreds of years meant that he’d acquired quite an extensively versatile lexicon.

The goon with the missing front tooth - courtesy of Wolfgang’s fist - attacked first. The toothless wonder swiped at Wolfgang’s throat with his knife. Wolfgang leaned back, swearing all the while. The knife missed his throat by a hairsbreadth. In the same moment, Wolfgang lashed out, driving his heel into the side of his knee. As Thing One doubled over and clutched his knee, Thing Two attacked, swiping at Wolfgang’s stomach. Wolfgang leaped back, almost running into the oak tree, and kicked the knife out of his attacker’s hand. The ogre didn’t stop for breath, immediately tackling Wolfgang and thrusting him headfirst into the tree. Wolfgang managed to twist in the ogre’s grip and avoided thumping his head against the solid trunk. Instead, his shoulder took the brunt of the force.

They struggled in the dirt for a moment and the first twin began regaining his feet. Nyssa was about to crawl out and attempt to help when Wolfgang kicked Thing two off him and rolled to his feet.

The three faced off for a moment. Wolfgang was still weaponless, besides his sharpened teeth and claws beginning to poke out of the ends of his fingers, but he managed to disarm at least one of the goons.

Wiry hair was beginning to grow out of Wolfgang’s neck and back and his face began to take a more animalistic shape, lengthening to allow for his sharpening teeth. Wolfgang hunched his shoulders, something Nyssa had seen him do hundreds of times but now his back arched and contorted. Popping bones and the grinding of joints echoed through the graveyard. Wolfgang’s deep growl rumbled through his inhuman chest.

While Wolfgang was distracted, one of the twins attacked. He raised his knife and went to plunge it into the twisting flesh of Wolfgang’s back. Without thinking Nyssa yanked at the air in front of her, pulling the knife out of the ogre’s grip and sending it skittering out the cobblestones. The ogre turned instinctively to watch the knife make off down the path on its own. By the time he whipped around, Wolfgang was finished writhing around on the ground. In his placed crouched a shadowy beast that resembled a hyena except for its massive bulk and the demonic red glow of its eyes.

The thing that used to be Wolfgang leapt at him, landing heavily on the ogre’s chest and sending them both to the ground. Is thick paw swiped at the prone ogre and would have clawed his face clear off if the ogre hadn’t warded off the blow with his forearm. As it were, the beast’s claws did considerable damage, shearing through skin and muscle.

The beast would have finished him off if his twin hadn’t come charging in. The ogre charged at the beast, shoulder first, and sent them reeling towards the chain fence. The beast twisted, forcing the ogre to take the brunt of the hit. The ogre hit the fence hard, the beast’s weight forcing him backwards and up over the waist-high fence. He landed heavily on his neck, his head bent at an odd angle.

The beast growled at the ogre’s crumpled form, inspecting for any movement. When he remained unconscious, the beast backed up into the shadows. There was a few minutes of growling and the sound of crunching bone and then Wolfgang emerged, in all his gangly teenage glory.

He vaulted over the fence and landed lightly despite his earlier confrontation. He was glaring at something out of Nyssa’s view.

“I don’t have all night,” Wolfgang rumbled, his voice more demon than human. From the shadows, the final enemy approached. He’d watched as Wolfgang decimated his companions but didn’t look in the least bit worried.

Wolfgang stalked towards him but something was wrong. He was holding his arm oddly. He must have injured his shoulder when he was thrown into the tree. Wolfgang didn’t look concerned, he just looked pissed.

The final ogre hefted a large branch, actually, it looked more like a small tree that he’d ripped right out of the ground. It still had clumps of dirt clinging to its remaining roots. He hoisted the shrub over his head and brought it down on his victim, intending to split Wolfgang’s head open with it. It thudded heavily against the ground. Wolfgang had simply stepped to one side.

The ogre tried again, this time swiping at Wolfgang’s chest. The ghoul ducked underneath the clumsily swung branch. The ogre, expecting solid contact was thrown off balance when his swing missed. He was off balance and vulnerable. Wolfgang launched himself out of his crouch and swung a vicious right cross at the ogre’s exposed jaw. The punch had the full power of Wolfgang’s legs and shoulder in it and was placed perfectly. The little cluster of nerves exposed on the ogre’s jaw sent lightening messages to his tiny brain, short circuiting it.

The ogre was unconscious before he even hit the ground.
