Chapter 135 – Wintery Days 4
The winter came hard upon Gann. The villages that are not on the western side of the nation became buried in snow. The visibility became low and the wind got colder to the point that a single drop of liquid would freeze over. The Encampment located a few distance away from the village of Sardis was now covered with something like an eternal white hail.
This white hail that covers the area, it blocks the vision, like fogs, the white hail makes it hard for anyone to see. Because of this white hail, the activities on the encampment became harder. The soldiers were having a hard time doing their best on keeping guard.
But for the two individuals who came to this encampment for a task. This was a chance for them to succeed. With the fog of white hail covering the encampment, they could do their job of killing the cultist hiding among the guards.
It has been two days since the two has arrived and marked the cultist. The Cultist was someone who worked endlessly inside the encampment barely going out of the encampment. So it was hard for the two to do their task. But with this fog covering their tracks, the two started thinking of things to lure out of the cultist.
The Cultist was always near the western gates, just right next to the room where the soldiers get their assignment. He is assigned in that room and in order for the two to have him out. The two decided to scour for any ways to change his patrol area.
To do so, one of the two, Peronell, went and sneaked inside the room. She looked for the name of the guard which she learned from eavesdropping and tampered with the guard area assignments.

After changing the area assignments, Peronell went out of the room and waited a day with her partner Ramiel for the guard to change area. It worked well and the guard started packing out and changed the area where he is assigned.
It was an area located up a vantage point where there are usually two guards watching. Peronell changes it to only guard and the cultist should be the only one there.
So when the cultist moved to the area alone, he knew there was something wrong. The Cultist wasn’t a fool. He knew that it was suspicious that he was the only in the area and thought of going back to complain to the lieutenant that handles the role assignments. He had the right to do so considering that the area has zero visibility due to the white hail and that being alone was rather unusual.
It didn’t just sit well with the cultist that he was only one in the vantage point. So as the cultist scanned the area once, and started climbing down the vantage point.
He saw a light flash on his back which then activated his protection necklace that managed to block the attack. The cultist was alarmed, and he immediately raised his barrier protection only to see a blue bolt of light, ten of them seeking him.
The bolts of blue light dance in the sky, they floated around, encircling the cultist before raining down upon the cultist’s barrier. The barrier of the cultist sustained heavy damage at the attack.
There was a crack in the cultist barrier. Seeing this, the cultist was even more alarmed to the point he activated his magic perception. But, another bolt of light blasted above his location. This bolt of light flared up, almost blinding him.
The cultist covered his eyes, his magic perception went haywire as his visions distort and blur. He tried protecting himself from the golden bolt of lights that came from the distance but sadly for the cultist the barrier of his was absolutely destroyed.

The unrelenting barrage of the bolts of light made the cultist fear. So he casted another barrier, a mere protection aura as he dashes for it! The encampment was at least visible due to the torches, he could also make out of the gates of the encampment so the cultist tried to escape.
And in his escape, the cultist dodged the bolts of light. It rains like a volley upon him but the cultist was able to dodge through using some of his own magic. The cultist was an experienced soldier and a magus, so it was easy for him to do this, especially when his forte was evading enemies.
The Cultist was half a distance away from the encampment. He could see the burning torches on the road, placed for the merchants to see. But when he stepped forward, he didn’t see that there was someone waiting for him patiently to get back.
This person was Ramiel, and as instructed he waited for under the cold. And seeing the cultist jog, Ramiel use his own barrier, blocking the cultist path and using the improvise magic of his, blasted the cultist back, flat on his back.
The Cultist suffered injuries, the blast was able to crack his barrier and break three of his ribs. Ramiel wasn’t doing well either, his left arm, which he used to do the blast attack got dislocated, it was now facing the other way, and because of this Ramiel was currently feeling maddened. The pain was bothersome, and it was so painful Ramiel wishes he could die.
But Ramiel was rather strange. Instead of crying, his face showed a wicked expression, the edges his mouth reaching up to his ears, Ramiel was giggling like a lunatic as he approaches the cultist who was down on the ground.
The cultist saw the lunatic expression that Ramiel had. He didn’t know why but the moment he saw that his instincts told him that he should run. But even he could even get the chance, holy chains wrapped around his body. These chains tied him up, and because of it, he was unable to move.
The cultist tried to break free, yet when he looked at the person that was approaching him. He saw a blade appear under his wrist, this blade then pierced his diaphragm and the cultist could watch in horror as this blade digs and moves up to his throat.
Blood spurted everywhere.

The Kodoku Game
In Japanese folklore, there once existed an ancient technique among alchemists for harvesting the strongest poison known to man. A poison so vicious, so horrendous, that a single drop could incapacitate an entire nation of humans, several times over. A poison so intense that a single drop could turn the tides of a war on its head. As potent as it appeared however, this poison could be harvested from the blood of a single insect alone- an insect the alchemist’s called the ‘Kodoku’. As lucrative as was attaining this poison however, the problem lied in identifying this insect- its appearance, shape and size changed from region to region and from continent to continent. Sometimes it took the appearance of a ladybug and other times a horned-beetle. In order to determine the identity of this special insect the alchemists came up with an ingenious method. They created an impregnable jar of clay out of the best sandstone they could find and placed hundreds of different insects into the same jar. The jar was made with such great mastery that it allowed no insects to escape and allowed no objects to enter. The laws of nature dictated that the insects would remain together in the jar forever. However, it turned out that as time went on, the insects’ hunger for food and power caused them to turn against each other- one insect ate another until only one remained. This sole insect contained a poison that far surpassed that of all the others and became stronger as it ate more and more insects. The alchemists at this point had succeeded in identifying the Kodoku and could extract it’s poison as long as they continued to feed it regularly. Although this folklore ends here, the actual story does not. One day, as the alchemists cheered in joy of having identified the Kodoku they so eagerly wanted, they forgot to close the lid on the very jar that was considered to be completely impregnable. This small gap was just large enough for the Kodoku inside to crawl out. Famished from not having been fed for weeks, the Kodoku ended up eating the very alchemists that nourished its growth until not even the bones remained. Yet, the Kodoku’s hunger didn’t seem to subside in the slightest. So it traveled to the next village and began eating whatever it could find there. Its poison made it unparalleled in strength and slowly but surely it began to dwindle down the population of the entire city. Yet its hunger only continued to grow. So it traveled to the next city over and ate all it could there. Very soon, the Kodoku couldn’t find any more food to eat. There was no one left to eat and no one left to spectate. So it stood there, by itself pondering what possibly was left to eat that could satiate its hunger. But there was one thing left that Kodoku realized it had never eaten. Itself.
