《Seeking the Pinnacle》Chapter 20: The First Trial

While Qian Feng was still new to the cultivation world and had no concrete idea of what this was, he could still guess at the general idea of what the Forest King's Mansion was.
He had heard of inheritances from the Iron Fox. Apparently, some experts, nearing the end of their lifespan, wanted to pass on their legacy to someone qualified to receive it, thus strengthening humanity overall. They did this through inheritances, which contained both their skills, equipment, and other things they wanted to pass on, as well as tests they required worthy inheritors to pass. The punishment for failing these tasks, however, was often death.
Given that the other party was able to set up such a formidable formation, concealing a building as large as the Forest King's Mansion, Qian Feng had no doubt that the inheritance was indeed incredible. After all, just the name "Forest King" would imply that he had reached at least the Martial Emperor level(though the stage preceding it, Martial King, had a "King" in its name, cultivators would not typically be granted a title such as Forest King without reaching Martial Emperor stage. This was because the forest was part of nature, and thus insight into the natural laws required at least the fourth stage. If one was a third stage, they would still be referred to as a King, but it would be of a lesser domain, such as Raindrop King or Ember King.)
Though it wasn't too far above what Qian Feng was right now, only a difference of two realms, those two realms could prove a vast treasure for Qian Feng, for two reasons.
First, not everyone was as talented as Qian Feng. A and B class talents were already considered peak-level in the current era, and even then, in an area such as Qian Feng's, resources were too scarce to fully support such a talent. The most likely option was that the Forest King was a good talent, but due to the lacking environment and techniques available, only managed to reach the fourth stage. What did this mean? That reaching the fourth stage would mean the Forest King had likely spent a long time and accrued quite a bit of experience.

That was good for Qian Feng, as it was not treasures he was in need of currently(his teacher had a way of taking care of that), but techniques and hopefully certain things the Forest King found improtant to include in his inheritance, information-wise.
The second reason was that although it didn't seem like he was too far away from the Forest King's level, that two-stage gap was a big one, far larger than the gap between non-cultivators and Martial Warriors(in terms of difficulty to cross, not in battle power. The effects of Qi and cultivating were still too large - a mortal had no chance of standing up to a cultivator, unless special means were employed). There were likely quite a few techniques, treasures, and resources, that, no matter if Qian Feng wasn't really in need of them, could certainly prove useful.
Without hesitation, Qian Feng entered. If he was determined to complete his goal, he would need overwhelming strength, and the only way to get that was to risk his life at every opportunity.
The first thing he saw when he entered was a long hallway. All throughout it, little holes were drilled into the wall, and stone tiles lay on the floor. All in all, the hallway looked like one of the cliche trapped hallways in classics of QIan Feng's previous world, like Indiana Jones.
On the right wall, characters were boldly inscribed into the wood, reading "The First Trial". This could only mean that he had to pass through this in order to receive the inheritance, that and an unknown amount of aditional trials.
Taking a trick out of that book, Qian Feng picked up a nearby stone and tossed it onto the tiles. Almost immediately, a metallic spherical object popped out and landed onto the ground, detonating in a powerful explosion and sending a blast of searing heat towards him. Qian Feng also found it very strange that even after that explosion that could easily kill the Cruel Shadow Dragon, the materials of the hallway and the floor were completely unharmed.

Putting it aside, Qian Feng began to plan the way he would clear this trial.
It seemed that it could only be passed by speed, defense, or trap-dismantling. Of those three, Qian Feng was completely helpless in two, so that left Qian Feng with one option: defense.
Now, even if he were to use his Earth Qi, he would barely be able to withstand a single explosion if at all, let alone the multiple explosions that would come if he were to pass the hallway. What did that mean? More training!
In order to lay the proper foundation, Qian Feng decided to focus on body cultivation instead of Qi. He was near a new proficiency level anyways with Tian Mountain Technique, which would undoubtedly give him the ability to survive the tribulation of the explosions. So, Qian Feng got into a lotus position right where he was and started practicing the Tian Mountain Technique, attempting to break through to Initial mastery.
At the beginning, he was only about 70% of the way to that level, not even at the bottleneck, so it took about three days of straight practicing before Qian Feng was able to touch upon the border to reaching Initial stage.
Qian Feng sat on the ground, taking vigorous breaths and remaining completely still as his skin began to take on a glossy sheen. His face morphed in pain as every single one of his skin cells transformed, becoming more compact and dense. The power of his pure physical body skyrocketed, as even his strength increased, though not nearly as much as his defensive power. Qian Feng was breaking through!
He gave a forceful roar as that one last push was made, his skin's toughness increased many folds in an instant. Now, Qian Feng was confident that if he were to face the Cruel Shadow Dragon again, the worst it could do with its teeth was inflict a small cut.
Standing up and rolling his shoulders, Qian Feng mentally prepared himself for what was to come next as he bounced up and down on the balls of his feet.
Explosion after explosion sounded, shaking even the sturdy wooden mansion and ripping Qian Feng's clothes apart.
After the dust cleared, a young boy could be seen lying on the floor on the opposite side of the hallway, naked and bruised with a grimace on his face, but safe.
First trial, passed!

Small Chests Are Fine Too
It is an undeniable fact that good things come in small packages. More often than not, it is necessary to trim the fat in order to bring what really matters to the forefront. Having extra bulk may seem like a good idea, but in reality it is merely a crutch that will one day become a hindrance, as it is no substitute for personality nor ability. Indeed, often times it is the small things in life that brighten up our daily lives and constantly remind us exactly why we do the things we do. However, it is important to keep an open mind, for while bigger is not always better, there are also times when it is. This holds especially true when it comes to hopes and dreams, which have been known to require a suitably large container from time to time. And while dreaming big could potentially lead to massive dissapointment, one will never truly reach fulfilment if they think too small. A truth that one small woman with meager aspirations is about to find out. DISCLAIMER: This is a spin-off/side story of my main series, Everybody Loves Large Chests, which is also mandatory reading to understand this one. It runs parallel to the main plot, branching off from the chapter titled Upheaval 2, so there will be spoilers for anyone who hasn't reached that point.
