Chapter 6
Laying in the dungeon of the castle, black were slowly awaking. He tried opening his eyes but eyes but his view remained blurry. Someone was trying to open the lock of the prison door. “Is this the mercenary..?”, Black thought while the door opened. Black's eyesight got clear.
“Wait, this isn't a mercenary.. It's Kiomi!”, Black couldn't believe his eyes. “She came back? After all I said?”, He tried to speak. “K-Kiomi.. why are you-” “Save it. You need to save your energy.” She said in a bossy tone. Hearing Kiomi speaking to him again gave Black a little smile on his face. She got down to him so he could put his arm on her shoulder and she could support help him walking.
“How are we.. gonna get away.. from the knights like this?”, Black breathed heavy while trying to talk. Kiomi didn't answered but then suddenly whistled. At first nothing happened, but out of the dark Haru appeared. Black got stunned how well Haru was listening to Kiomi, normally he wouldn't listen to anyone but Black. Kiomi helped him to sit on the wolf and then sat herself on Haru.
“Haru is fully recovered.. How?”, Black asked, admiring and confused. “I healed him.”, Kiomi answered, turning her head around to Black, looking at him with a proud expression. Before Black could answer, Kiomi shouted, “Haru go!” and Haru started running up the stairs, and out of the castle dungeon, riding away from two knight who were guarding the dungeon exit. The knights couldn't do anything beside being shocked by the big wolf and screaming “Halt” and “stop”. Nevertheless Haru kept running with the destination to the exit gate of the kingdom.
The unexpected speed boost of Haru made Black hold close and tight on Kiomi's waist.
The knights who guarded the gate to get outside of the kingdom saw Haru and were letting down the gate.
“We won't make it!”, Black shouted worried. Kiomi didn't payed any attention to what Black just said and told Haru, “Faster Haru!” And Haru kept running even faster. The gate was almost closed now but Haru kept running.

Black closed his eyes, afraid to run against the wood of the gate. But instead, short before they would have smashed against the wood of the gate, nothing happened.
After Black realized it, He slowly opened his eyes. He looked down and saw that they were flying above the gate and the walls. It felt like everything happened in slow motion. Black could see the shocked faces of the two knights, watching how fast Haru was flying over the wall. Kiomi hold herself on Haru's neck, while giggling after she saw how confused everyone was.
Haru landed on the other side of the walls and kept running to a forrest, that was a little further away so they could hide. When they finally arrived at the forrest, Black was speechless.
Kiomi got down form Haru and put her hand softly on Haru's head.
“Don't look at me like that, You never saw the effects from a magic potions?” Kiomi asked Black.
But Black didn't looked like he understood what she was trying to tell him.
“Mhm.. okay, I will explain it to you. While you were busy killing our knights..” she said and looked reproachful at Black. “Yeah.. sorry for that..”, Black mumbled to Kiomi.
But Kiomi still didn't seemed very pleased. “I got too angry..” Black added looking guilty at the ground.
“Sigh.. anyway.. I was mixing a potion for Haru, a jumping potion. When I came down to the dungeon, I used my powers to heal Haru. Then I gave him the potion and he drank it. Then I just hoped that he understood that he needed to jump when we reached the gate.”, Kiomi explained with a unfortunate smile.
“Now.. let me heal you.”, She said in a calm voice.
“You.. need to put your shirt off..”, She said, trying to not get red. Black humorously smiled and did as the lady said. The efforts of Kiomi were useless then she got red right away, when Black put it off. She asked him to sat down. Now she pressed her hand gently on his chest.

“If I touch you, closer to your heart.. It's.. easier.” Kiomi quietly said. She got both hands on him and closed her eyes. Her hands started to glow and she made an expression of pain. Black looked curious at her hand and didn't realized her expression. After a few seconds the fresh blood and wounds disappeared. Kiomi gave a exhausted exhale and leaned next to Black on the tree.
“Wow.. looks like I never had wounds!.. impressive..”, Black said in an admiring tone, looking all over his body were the blood used to be. “Youre welcome.” Kiomi said in a breathy voice.
“Are you okay?” He asked her while he noticed she got very exhausted. “I am fine. So where are we gonna go now?” She answered him, directly changing the topic.
“We?”, Black asked. “Yes. We.” Kiomi answered again. “We are not going anywhere. You will go back to your kingdom where its safe and you will say that I forced you to help me escape. So nothing will happen to you.” Black said, putting his shirt back on.
“No! I will come with you. All my life I dreamed about going on adventures.. And since you are here already I will come with you!... I don't want you to leave me for another 18 years again..” Kiomi admitted to him.
Black thought for a moment and were about so say something but she already started to talk again,
“I even already bought my bag with all the things that I wanted to bring to our adventures!! You can't leave me again! You owe me something.. without me you wouldn't even be outside of the castel dungeons! And-”
“Okay, okay.. You can come with me for now. But I have a condition.” Black said serious.
Kiomi looked at him with a happy committed face and nodded.
“You need to learn how to fight. I will go to dangerous places, without any clue of fighting you won't come far.”
“But I already know how to fight! You would be surprised how good I am at it.” Kiomi said proudly.
“sigh.. Magic is based of emotion and control, it is not good to only rely on it. If you feel too sad or too angry it can go crazy or doesn't work at all. So.. I will teach you how to fight.”
Black firmly told her.
“if I have to okay.. I will try.” She said and closed her eyes.
He turned his back to her and instructed her, “Well you shouldn't just try, Its very impo-” Black stopped talking when he heard Kiomi falling to the ground. He directly turned around and layed her head on his lap. “Hey! Are you okay?”, Black shouted very worrying.
Kiomi slightly opened her eyes and said: “I am alright.. It was just a very exhausting day..” And closed her eyes again.
A stone fell from the heart of Black. “Of course she is exhausted.. She isn't used to this stress. I will bring her to the next tavern and give her some water and food.. after that I am sure she will regain her strength.” He thought and sat her gently on Haru. He sat behind her so she could rest on his chest and he could hold her.
“Buddy try running careful now, we have a princess on board.” Black whispered to Haru.
And so Haru started running, not as carefree as usual, to the tavern and so to a new adventure.

There will be some action, but it won't be the focus of the story and Vee and his friends will usually overcome their problems with their minds and their pocketbooks instead of their weapons. Since I'm participating in the writeathon, I will probably be uploading chapters almost daily for the duration of the event. Thanks for reading!

Paternum: A Superhero Story
When Quinn finds an experimental superpower-granting costume in their parents’ attic, they didn’t expect to be drawn into a web of superhuman intrigue, but their discovery serves as the catalyst for that conspiracy to slowly unravel. At it’s heart, Paternum is an extended coming-of-age story for the main character as they become a superhero, in a world with more reasonable stakes and less powerful heroes than many superheroic worlds. Themes include what art means to different people, and what it means to be a patron, whether as a sponsor, a parent, or a supporter. I consider Paternum‘s primary influences to be the various versions of Spider-Man, J. C. McCrae’s own superhero story Worm, and Drew Hayes’ story SuperPowereds. I hope that fans of such stories can find something to enjoy in mine as well. Paternum is primarily hosted on my website (thevoidwrites.com) where it updates weekly in groups of scenes totalling approximately 2000 words. Here on Royal Road, it will update once daily with one scene at a time, but only after each act is completed on the home site - the next batch of updates is scheduled to begin on February 5th. There is a discord channel for discussion (discordapp.com/invite/QFMM6yA), and you can vote for Paternum on topwebfiction (topwebfiction.com/vote.php?for=paternum) as well. Finally, you can buy the first book of Paternum, The Swift Uplifting Rush, in a couple different ways - as an ebook through Amazon, or directly from me for a discounted price, or as a physical paperback from Amazon. Buying the book will give you access to Drawing Hands, an exclusive arc that won't ever be published on either my site or Royal Road.
