《Red Flash》Chapter 8 - The Definition of a Genocide

- (Anna’s POV) -
Shiro is running in the forest with me and Alice on her back. Before the genocide, I would like to find a few weak monsters to let Alice test her magic.
I spread my mana around us to cover a surface of a few kilometers and I can sense all kinds of monster…
Ohh! Here we go, this mana signature should belong to a goblin!
“Turn to the right, Shiro!” (Anna)
Shiro obediently turn to the right side and then we can see the goblin.
“Shiro, stop!” (Anna)
She stops and lies down to let us jump out of her back. Then I turn toward Alice and speak to her.
“Alice, you will be the one killing this goblin! Remember what I taught you! You should be able to kill it.” (Anna)
“I-I will do my best!” (Alice)
She stiffens her back; she is way too much stressed…
“No stress! Take it slowly, me and Shiro are here to protect you if you fail.” (Anna)
The goblin notices us, and start running toward Alice. She circulates her mana slowly and try to give shape to a fireball then she fires it. However, the goblin dodges the fireball by a small margin.
“Don’t stay at the same spot! You have to move while firing your spell! And don’t use fire magic inside a forest!” (Anna)
The fireball hit a tree and starts to spread so I instantly extinguish it.
Alice is now running in a circle around the goblin. A goblin is quite slow, so it’s fine. She creates some kind of ice peaks and launch it toward the goblin. This time, the spell reach its head and it dies on the spot.
“Quickly absorb the mana from the monster!” (Anna)
You might be wondering how to get stronger in game and why I killed millions of monsters, right? Well, when a monster (or a human) die, its mana goes back to the air. So, we need to quickly absorb it before it disappears into the air to increase the amount of mana that we possess. However, to absorb it, you need to control the mana flow to bring the mana to your heart, so the citizens of this world can’t do it. It also explains why my magic is stronger than some mage that trains for 60 years despite playing for only 11 years.
She absorbs it too slowly, so the mana starts to disappear. She could only absorb half, so I take the rest for myself before it disappears.
Well, it’s not like Alice can become OP in a few days if I let her absorb the mana of a few monsters. A goblin’s mana is close to non-existent. Furthermore, I killed millions of extremely strong monsters for several years to reach my current amount of mana!~ And I had no risk of dying in the game, so I could take a lot of risk like going in a dungeon alone.
“The second half of the combat was pretty good! Let’s find more weak monsters!” (Anna)
Currently, Alice’s magic with a catalyst is as strong as her magic without a catalyst. But in a few days, the magic without catalyst will be stronger.
***********
Around 5 minutes later, Alice killed 2 more goblins and absorbed half of their mana.
I guess it’s time to start the genocide, right?
“Ok, good job Alice! Now it’s my turn! So here is the plan: I will run extremely fast while using my ‘radar’ and kill everything that I can detect, then instantly put them in my inventory. Shiro, you will follow me with Alice on your back, make sure that she doesn’t fall and don’t get hurt!” (Anna)
Shiro should be able to follow me even if I run at a speed higher than 100 kilometers per hour (=28 m/s). By the way, I don’t need to touch the monster’s corpse to put it in my inventory, I only need to reach it with my mana. The monster has to be dead though, I can’t put living being inside somehow.
The plan is EXTREMELY efficient, but it also consumes A LOT of mana. But since I control my mana very well, I can still keep doing it for a few hours.
I think I need to explain first how does the mana consumption work.
To be short, if I fire a spell with ALL my mana, the spell would be extremely powerful, BUT it doesn’t mean that I will be out of mana. I will only be out of mana for a few seconds. When the spell reach the target, all the mana will go back to the air, BUT since it’s my mana and I control it very well, I can get it back by pulling it back to me. However, there is still a loose, I can’t get back 100% of my mana used, but only about 90% of it.
It means that:
- Big amount of mana = stronger spell
- High control of mana = low consumption of mana and the spell is created faster.
If you want to be a strong mage, you need both.
So, for this ‘genocide plan’, I will try to get back most of the mana used, so I can keep up for a few hours before running out of mana.
Ok, let’s go back to the genocide, alright?~
I start to locate the monsters with my ‘radar’. There is really a lot of them… The receptionist was right when she said that the number of monsters increased those last few days. I wonder what’s the cause of it... Well, all of those monsters won’t exist anymore soon so it’s fine, right?~
I take my sword from my inventory and start running toward the closest monster. When I pass close to a monster, I slash it with my sword, killing it instantly. When the monster is dozens of meters farther, I kill it using magic, then I put all monsters in the inventory. I don’t even look what monster is it or if I need it for the quest, I just kill it and put it in the inventory.
“Alice! Try to absorb as much mana as you can, I will take what you can’t take for myself. Also, be careful to not fall from Shiro.” (Anna)
I take a look behind me and Shiro is properly following me without problem.
Let’s continue this genocide!~
***********
It has been approximately 2 hours since I started my ‘genocide’. I try to find more monster on my ‘radar’ but I find nothing, even if I expand the range for 5 kilometer in diameter. Maybe I went a bit too far with this genocide?~
It’s the first time since I came to this world that I’m exhausted. I only have about 20% of mana remaining, I’m exhausted physically for running at top speed for hours, and also mentally for casting 5 different ‘spells’ at the same time.
“Let’s stop it here for now and see what monster we got.” (Anna)
“You are even more amazing than I imagined, you were so cool Anna-oneesama!” (Alice)
Alice sound very excited and unlike me, she is not tired. Well, she was on top of Shiro during all this time. By the way, Shiro is not really exhausted, as expected of a mount! My maximum speed is similar to her maximum aswell, BUT I can only last for a few hours while she can continue for days if she wants to. That’s why I will rely on her when I need to travel a long distance!~

“Haha, but I’m very tired right now, uh.” (Anna)
There is still something EXTREMELY annoying to do…
I took out all the monsters that we killed. It’s literally a mountain of corpses! There are several thousands of them!!
“So… I’m sorry Alice, but please help me to class and dismantle them all! Here is a good knife for you.” (Anna)
Seeing the amount of work that we need to do, Alice make a disgusted face… Haha, as expected.~
But once I give her the knife and start to dismantle a monster, her face lit up.
“Wow! I can cut it so easily with this knife! I never saw something of this quality!” (Alice)
“Well, the material for this one is mithril.” (Anna)
“MITHRIL?!” (Alice)
Why does everybody react like this when I talk about the material of my items??
“Well, I guess I should stop thinking about common sense when I’m with you, I might die from a headache.” (Alice)
HEY!! That was very rude, you know?!
Ignoring her comment, I also take out a knife and start dismantling the monsters.
“Shiro, your role is to protect us while we dismantle the monster!” (Anna)
*******
It has been approximately 2 hours since we started dismantling, and we only dismantled half of the monsters!! We are mainly taking the monster core and the meat. The guild needs the monster core as a proof of subjugation. For certain case, we also take out the horns or the teeth if they have a good value.
“Let’s take a break to eat lunch!” (Anna)
Yes, it should be around noon according to the sun’s position.
I take out some food that I cooked yesterday and share it with Alice. It’s a well-cooked steak with vegetables. It looks like Alice like it, so everything is good!~
After lunch, I stand up and say:
“Let’s continue where we stopped, alright?” (Anna)
**********
Approximately 3 hours later, we finally finished to dismantle every monster!
We also placed all the quests on the ground, there is 4 C-rank, 11 D-rank, 24 E-rank and 2 F-rank. Somehow, most F-rank quests are ‘material gathering’ like herbs or others stuff so we only took the monster subjugation one.
Every item that is needed for the quest is placed on the paper! So, we got everything needed! By the way, I recovered my stamina and half of my mana.
Somehow… I killed from 3 to 10 times more monsters for each quest than it was needed so even if I give the material to the guild for the quest, I will still keep a lot of material (we also dismantled the others monsters, not only those needed for the quest).
I put everything in my inventory while being careful to separate each quest to avoid mixing everything!
“Let’s go back to the town!” (Anna)
We jump on Shiro’s back and we go back to the town. It takes around 10 minutes to go back.
Once we can see the gate of the town a few hundred meters in front of us, we stop, jump out of Shiro’s back, then I unsummon Shiro because I don’t want to scare the citizens to death!~
We cross the gate and the same guard saw us.
“Was your day fruitful?” (guard 1)
“Haha, you can say it like this!” (Anna)
I think that ‘fruitful’ is an understatement!~
We walk until we arrive in front of the Adventurer Guild. We go inside the building, then we go to the receptionist that gave us the quests.
“I suppose that you are here to give up the quests, right? Let me find the document stating the price of the penalty.” (receptionist)
“No, I properly took care of it.” (Anna)
What a rude receptionist! Is that how you treat the adventurers?
“Uhh? What are you saying?” (receptionist)
“I’m saying that we completed all the quests.” (Anna)
Then I took out all the material and split it on the desk without mixing it. Her face freezes and then she runs toward the stairs. Ah… She ran away… Let’s put back the items in the inventory and wait in that case.
I’m waiting in front of the desk for a few minutes, and the receptionist suddenly come back.
“The guild master wish to see you. Please follow me upstairs.” (receptionist)
I follow her along with Alice. We then enter the guild master’s office. He sighs when he sees me and says:
“So, a few hours after receiving your guild card, you are already making a ruckus?!” (Geoffrey)
“What are you saying? I only do my job as a fellow adventurer!” (Anna)
I say so with a sarcastic tone. I know that what I did is not normal, I only play along with him!~
“Then, if every adventurer were doing their ‘job’, we would be out of quest every time!!” (Geoffrey)
Haha, I like his humor!~ Oh, he sighs again!
*sigh*
“More seriously, please show me all the quests and the proof of subjugation. You can put it on this table.” (Geoffrey)
I take out everything, every item placed on top of the paper for the quest. We all sit on a chair near the table.
“They told me that you took ‘several’ quest, but I didn’t know it was THIS MUCH!!” (Geoffrey)
“Well, sorry I guess?” (Anna)
“So it’s 1, 2, 3 ..…. 41 QUESTS AT THE SAME TIME?! Are you crazy?” (Geoffrey)
“So? What’s the problem about it?” (Anna)
“The problem is YOU!!” (Geoffrey)
Wow! So rude!
“Whatever, I don’t even want to think about it anymore, it gives me a headache…” (Geoffrey)
Me and Geoffrey turn toward Alice because we can hear some giggle. She was totally amused by the situation. Seeing her, Geoffrey sighs again.
“I see, you decided to take 41 quests at the same time, alright. Then you do a genocide in the forest, no problem about it. BUT YOU EVEN HAVE TO BRING THE LORD’S DAUGHTER WITH YOU ?! What the hell is wrong with you?!” (Geoffrey)
RIP Geoffrey’s common sense. Let’s all lit a candle for him!~
“What’s wrong with that? Her parents told me that it was fine to bring her so she can experience the life a ‘normal’ adventurer for a day! (Anna)
I can’t help but tease him!
“DON’T SAY IT’S ‘NORMAL’!! I don’t want to get a letter from her father tomorrow asking since when do every ‘normal’ adventurer take 41 QUESTS AT THE SAME TIME!!” (Geoffrey)
“Hahahahaha!” (Alice)
It looks like Alice couldn’t stop herself from laughing. I also want to laugh but I should restrain myself.~
**SIGH**
Geoffrey drops a big sigh, then he speaks in a more serious tone.
“Well, let’s leave it at that for now… You completed enough quests to rank up to C-rank!” (Geoffrey)
Oh nice! Those hours of pain were not for nothing, I guess!~
“You will get your pay and get your card edited once you go to a receptionist. But I want to talk about a few things before. How was the forest, did you find anything strange?” (Geoffrey)
“The number of monsters was quite high, but I didn’t find anything else unusual.” (Anna)
“Well, the fact that there is C-rank monster is already unusual… I wonder why all of those monsters decided to migrate in the Green Forest… The only thing that I can think about is that they were chased from their home by a way stronger monster. If my theory is true, it might be very dangerous since our only A-ranked adventurer went to the capital. But the only thing I can do now is investigate… I already sent some B-rank adventurer to do the job.” (Geoffrey)
Mhh I see, it might explain everything. But at the same time, I’m a bit excited because I might finally find something worth fighting!~
“I didn’t find any sign of a strong monster.” (Anna)
“Well, we will see the result of the investigation. You can go for now, don’t forget to see a receptionist for your reward and guild card.” (Geoffrey)
*********
I leave his office along with Alice, take my reward and change the rank of my guild card to C. I got a total of 18 gold coins for the 41 quests. Not bad, it’s nearly 2 years worth of salary for an average commoner! There was only 4 C-rank quest after all!
I go out of the Adventurer Guild with Alice, then I turn toward her and smile.
“So, Alice, what do you think about the ‘normal’ life of an adventurer?” (Anna)
Both me and Alice explode in laughter after I say that.
“Hahaha, yes it was amazing! I also want to do those ‘normal’ thing, hehe! (Alice)
“By the way, I have some business with the merchant guild and the orphanage. Do you want to come with me, or should I escort you to your house?” (Anna)
“I want to go with you, Anna-oneesama!” (Alice)
Well, it’s only 4PM according to the sun’s location. I still have many things to do today!
