《Deathlord Eugene》Chapter 10: Eat The Engagement Ring

It’s Sunday already. I could’ve been at home relaxing and preparing for the start of the workweek. Yet here I am, looking to buy myself an engagement ring. Who’s the lucky lady, you ask? None other than my status screen, of course. Ever since I saw her, I just fell in love with her. I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. That, and I need her to survive.
The store clerk is eyeing me suspiciously. I must look entirely out of place here. Nevertheless, I look through the selection available, not letting it bother me too much. Most of these rings only have a small gem on them. I’m looking for a big stone on a thin ring, preferably on the cheaper side. Looking back to the clerk, I give him an awkward smile and beckon him over for help.
“How can I help you, sir?” he addresses me politely, but over the years, I’ve learned to distinguish the difference between voluntary and mandatory respect. This was of the latter kind. “Uh, yes, I’m looking for an engagement ring, preferably with a decent diamond on it and a thin band. Somewhere around 2000 dollars if possible. Do you have anything available?
At the sound of money, his demeanor changed rapidly. “Why yes, sir, let me get out a few for you to look through.” He eventually decides on a few that could potentially fit the description. “Here’s eight rings that could fit your needs, sir. Some of them are a bit more expensive, but I’m sure your girlfriend would appreciate them. Maybe you can even bring her to look them over if it’s not a surprise engagement, of course?” The salesperson in him seems to have awakened, hoping to lure in my nonexistent partner to woo her with the most expensive rings and guilt me into a costly purchase.

Luckily for me, he made the mistake of letting the decision be in my hands. “She’s not yet aware,” I answer deftly. Aware of his error, my opponent gives me some room to look over the merchandise and also introspection to figure out his next move against me. Eyeballing the diamonds’ sizes, it feels like the most expensive one is the cheapest diamond per dollar. It does cost a whopping 3400 dollars, almost double my initial price.
Thinking it over, though, I realize this is probably the only time I can come in here to buy an engagement ring. If I come in every week to buy a new ring, people would start talking. Sure, it wouldn’t matter too much what the average person would think, but that information could end up in the wrong hands. Perhaps someone else who is dealing with the same problems I am. Maybe, they want a quick and easy level-up in the form of a weak player. Though chances are small, Eva is right that we should keep a low profile for as long as we can. We don’t know how fierce the competition is just yet.
I’m pretty sure there’s no other choice but to get the most expensive one. Though my bank account will despise me for it, I must make this disgustingly costly purchase. “ I’d like this one, please.” pointing down on the most impressive of the bunch. The fiend in front of me smiles, no doubt thinking he has tricked me into buying the biggest one. Don’t get cocky, kid. I only bought it cause I needed it. You haven’t won this battle. If I ever face you again on the storefront, I’ll make sure you’ll feel my full wrath.
“Would you like to pay in cash or credit card, sir?” the man smiles annoyingly brightly. “Credit card, please.” I smile back, despising my loss. The clerk packs my item neatly and hands it to me. “I’m confident your soon-to-be fiance will love this!” grinning as he gives me the bag. After thanking him, I quickly make my way out, not wanting to spend a second more in the store than I have to.

“Is that a big rock in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?” I hear Eva say behind me. I can’t get used to the fact that only I can interact with her. It adds more legitimacy to the theory that I’ve finally lost all my marbles than I’m comfortable with.
I think of a snide remark, knowing she’ll get my message. I can’t just talk in public to her. People will think I’m insane. We’ll talk properly after going to the pawnshop and seeing if I can sell some of these precious coins and materials. I’ll probably lose money like that, but I need the comfort of cold hard cash to get me through this nightmare right now.
The shop we’ve arrived at is exceptionally seedy. Going inside is essentially consenting to get ripped off. Nevertheless, I must make a profit. The man at the counter has a heavyset physique. That might be an understatement as he weighs more than me by a factor larger than two. Looking closer, he reminds me of that one pawnshop show that used to air on television back in the day. Chumlee, I name him in my mind.
“Whadya want?” his voice is rough and unwelcome, putting me off and making my voice meek. “Uh, how much for this?” I show him a few gold coins. He inspects them and asks me to test them. I’ve already tried them myself at home, I used to find gold trinkets all the time on the flea market, but I decided to humor him. Going through the motions, he checked the coin.
“Sorry, pal looks fake to me.” he lies horribly. “But it’s a cool-looking coin. I can give you five bucks for each?” There’s the scam. I was hoping I could at least sell a few things, but if even my gold isn’t safe, this isn’t the place for me. There were a few more shops on the list as I got back onto the beaten path, walking door to door to see if I can earn a quick buck.
Eventually, I manage to sell a chunk off. At a loss, of course, but the money is necessary. Exhausted by the ordeal, I head back home, trudging along to the sounds of Eva alternating between rubbing it in and comforting me.
“While it didn’t quite go as planned, we did make some progress,” she encouraged me. More importantly, now we can level you up properly. She instructs me to absorb the ring, whatever that may mean. I try for a few minutes and eventually succeed after concentrating hard enough.
[Congratulations, you’ve gained 40 points to allocate]
We both look in confusion at the pop-up. I thought that was supposed to be Eva. How come I got a pop-up like this if she’s right next to me. “I don’t get it either,” I hear her say,” But what matters is that only using one potential, you already got 40 points. With this, we can finally bump you up and send you off to defeat the first boss!”
“Boss?” I can feel blood draining my face. Should’ve known there were boss creatures too. “Jep, you thought it was hell now, just wait till you see what I’ll be putting you through next!”
I wonder if it’s too late to become a monk and learn to live a peaceful life.

Kind’s Kiss
MAGIC DOESN'T KILL, NOT BY ITSELF. IT NEEDS A LITTLE HELP. Jessica DeRidder is a substitute teacher and mage in hiding, her daughter Ellen a killer on the run. Their next job lands the mother-daughter team in Hellhole, a small town in the middle of nowhere. All they need to do is their job. For Mom to identify the problem, and for Ellen to... fix it. Easy. Simple. But not this time. The pair find themselves caught in the struggle between the Man-in-White and the Wicked Witch of the West. A mysterious image and the theft of a deadly flower lead the pair to a score of dead prisoners, magical drug dealers, and red-eyed assassins falling from the sky. And somehow it all seems to be related to Ellen's murky past. All Ellen wants to do is do her homework, eat ice cream, and protect her newfound friends (not necessarily in that order). She'll go all-in, guns blazing. But when the smoke clears there may be nothing left but a stranger's past and a lonely future. --- 'Kind's Kiss' is a light, modern-day fantasy, easy on the magic, heavy on the snark. Though complete it is still a work in progress. One reviewer described it as 'Buffy meets Sabrina, as done by Tarantino'. I'm still not sure if I should consider that a compliment or hire a hitman :-)

Kyle signed the contract because he wanted to join an exciting pre-release eSports tournament. But now, he’s stuck in an immersive virtual reality world, fighting against hundreds of other players in a competition that might take years to complete. At least, it would take years unless the players unite to tackle the game together... A rules-light VRMMO fiction. The mechanics have a strong survivalcraft influence. The protagonist is far less powerful than in most VRMMO stories, and must exhibit heroism despite weakness. Its themes include the social dynamics of a VR world, a game world's effect on identity, and the influence one person can have on the culture around them.Releases every other M/W/F. Written without prior knowledge of the RPG-Lit genre; I was surpised to find out it was even a thing.

8 114The White Horde (Revised)
The rewritten version of the same ongoing story, recast into Past Tense and lightly edited. Inspired by the intrigue, drama, and destruction whispered to us by ancient history, this story is set in a world where magic is slowly dying, and decadent empires struggle against each other as well as against the barbarian hordes pushing ever westward. The story is told from the viewpoints of three people whose actions will change the fate of nations and empires alike: Amazonia. More than just a female gladiator but a champion of the arena, she will win her freedom at a price: to become a Reaver Knight not seen since the days of ancient Babylonia, with a mission to save the empire that enslaved her from destruction at the hands of a rival empire, the Sasnayams. Wysper. A Celtic priestess stolen away from her homeland by Muzen, high priest of the Sasnayam deity Yun-Kax, she possesses a mana node like a second heart inside her body which Muzen rips out each time he 'sacrifices' her to their god to appease the masses. Despite her strong will, everyone has a limit, and Muzen's actions have driven Wysper close to the edge of suicide. Greywolf. Son of the infamous Shadow-walker, Ghostdog, and the Celestial Asena, who was once revered as the Wolf-mother goddess, but now guards caravans for drinking money. His boring life will change when his impulsive act puts Wysper's life in danger, yet saving her risks his death, or enslavement at Muzen's hands. And all the while, the White Horde sits on the edge of empires, biding its time...

Five Lines PitchJoin Mark in his fight against a God and change the game's destiny! Delve into a slow-paced story focused on the progression of the main party and the development of the world. Mark himself will be narrating his life inside the game, and to a much lesser extend outside. Guild building, economy, and strategy are the central pieces of the novel. Mark is not overpowered, he will have to build his own power through action-packed battles, trials, traumas, love, and death. Accompany him, the healer and the strategist, an agent of chaos, in the adventure of his life. Without further preamble, I will let Mark take the mic. SynopsisHi! My name is Mark. This is my story, my life as I live it day after day. I’m in my thirties, and there’s nothing I love more than playing online games. I’ve just joined the action on the newest VRMMO game, Pawns of God. An immersive experience you can play while sleeping. Of course, as a game that takes pride in its long development and technological advances, everything inside seems and feels real. Beware, this is not a game-turns-real story. I love my own world and I would detest being summoned into another one. If that ever happens, I’ll just quickly take my life and be done with it. I play with my friends, in a party of 5. We have taken several roles, but lately, I've come to love being a healer. It's my secret ambition to someday be the shotcaller. I am not overpowered. If there is any bug or exploit in the game, they are yet to be discovered. Anyhow, for a game of this scale, the company is pouring all of its resources into test servers, QA, and beta tests. I don’t expect to find any, so I’ll be playing the game just like any other person. I must say, though, I am easily distracted, as you will immediately notice once you start. I'm working on it, I promise to improve! I am no hero. Being in my 30s, my heart is too old for this shit. I wouldn’t mind being one, of course. Who hasn’t dreamt of it? Either way, I’m not doing any grand quest to save the world. Whatever the game throws to their users, I’ll be there to experience it. Most of my life, at least the interesting parts that I’ll be narrating, happen inside the game itself. Rarely, there will be some IRL (In Real Life) chapters. You’ll understand, however, that as a freelance software developer, there is not much I can entertain you with when outside the game. Did I say I love games? Well, I’m also a fan of LitRPG literature. You know, journeys of magic, relationships, personal development, items, skills, discovery… In the spirit of not overwhelming my public, I’ll condense each chapter into circa 1500 words. You might have noticed some tags over this story, let me elaborate. I like to swear. I’m not shy when it comes to cursing my enemies, friends, or even myself. When there’s blood, I tell it as I see it. And… it hurts to admit it, but I’m not a casanova. Of course, this doesn’t mean that I won’t ever find love. So, in case I do end up finding it, let’s keep my sexual options open. As for traumas, none yet, but the future is vast and unknown. Release Schedule The schedule is subject to change, particularly if enough readers end up loving it. All chapters are already written, thus there is enough freedom to modify them. Arc 1 * Chapters 1-14: Each released one day and an hour later than the previous. Starting with chapter 2 at 09:20 UTC+2 on day 1, and finishing at 21:20 UTC+2 on day 13. Elapsed: 2 weeks Total: 2 weeks * Chapters 15-30: Releases every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 11:30 UTC+2. Elapsed: 5½ weeks Total: 7 weeks (1 month, 3½ weeks) * Chapters 31-49: Releases every Wednesday and Saturday at 11:30 UTC+2 Elapsed: 9½ weeks Total: 17 weeks (4 months, 1 week) All subsequent arcs will follow the same release schedule, 2/week. 8 181Manticore's Rise.
After the Old gods had been killed, the new age of freedom had begun. For two centuries, the people that had once been played against each other in pointless wars have worked hard to make new lives for themselves, unknowing of those that had retreated into the shadows beyond the realms. Amongst those shadows, as thankless protectors hold out hands for aid and peace, the servants of the old gods awaken. Those who know them work to foil their plans, those that know of them covet what they bring. Those who remember, fear the return of the old. This is the story that follows one such protector, dedicated to the elimination of those that have grown strong in the outer realms, gathering others from within to push them back. Will try and update each week. Also posting on Scribble Hub and Webnovel.
