《Of Deities and Dimensions》38. The Giant Death Robot

Zack watched the battle unfold with creeping sense of dread as he looked at the intensity of the conflict, then he decided the best way to get rid of his fear was to pump himself up by playing a heavy metal thrasher song in his head.

I AM a giant metal doom. Crushing the peons, sent to their tooooombs!

Razing the earth and killing ALLLL!

Beast of steel! Great deathball!

Resistance is naught! Giant death robot! Giant death robot!

It was the obvious choice of song but soon Zack began to realize that he couldn't have picked worse.

Coordinator Luke T Ace looked at the omniscreen through his omni-directional cybernetic eye gear attached to his head. His three pairs of arms, both biological and mechanical, typed furiously. His fingers slamming the keys on the keyboards, as was his style throughout his former E-sport career. His inputted commands and spoken orders directed the flow of what would be the final battle in their branch of the invasion force.

Rifleman Becker's walking tank blasted plasma round after round at the moving metal mountain. The giant android calculated the paths of all the incoming waves of fire at it, then pulled its massive frame into the lightest volley using it's innumeable thin legs that went on for miles. Several of Becker's plasma bursts severed a few legs but it was meaningless to the many legged three mile squared gun platform.

Void deconstructor cannons shot out rippling waves and everything they touched turned to mist, even taking chunks out of their metallic environment.

In midst of the pandemonium, a corner of Luke's mind thought 'Wasn't the usage of ordnance capable of damaging the floors and walls of this crazy place against the rules?'

Swarms of Tkiktch attacked the legs of the metal monstrosity but they were fended off by the endlessly mass produced ten foot tall androids. Scissor blades attached to their forearms sliced apart metal as if it were merely paper. Laserbeams flashed red across the air. Burnt oxygen and charred exoskeletons pervaded the senses of everyone who could smell.

But the Coordinators strategy was working. The entire force was attacking the many legs of the monolithic android. Many of it's long limbs were severed but got reattached by the repair bots that flocked around it, albeit at a slower rate than what was being cut off.

One of the Tkiktch threw a scythe blade from his arm at an android which was holding a key position, killing it. The blade quickly growing back and it took flight again, his wings beating almost a hundred times per second. Even the androids were having trouble getting a fix on the giant insect that darted and dived randomly at great speed. The coordinator didn't miss the oppoutunity, he ordered the units in the immediate vicinity to press into the android formation. Taking out multitudes of the many legged robots in rapid succesion. Then the giant started blanketing the area in vertical drop shrapnel rounds and all of the units that had been advancing pulled back. Luke frowned at the effectiveness of the giant's barrage, the bodies of over a hundred Tkiktch went flying and blew apart in every direction.

He cursed himself for not predicting the usage of the wide area of effect weapon and putting too many troops forward at once.

Likiper transports twisted in the air, evading the laserbeams from the androids. While their occupants retaliated using their own laser rifles. Each trying to keep their aim steady even as the geforces soared.

Tkiktch brood queens wielding biotech rifles lobbed two foot in diameter balls of insect colonies. Upon impact they burst apart and great multitudes of thumbnail sized Tkiktch swarmed out. Each one's mandibles capable of cutting into even the hardest of metals. To meet them, the androids deployed nanobots of similar size. All across the massive indoor battlefield, Coordinator Luke T Ace saw clouds of blue friendlies and clouds of red hostiles intertwining with one another. The microscopic battles waged on until the intertwined areas of the clouds turned completely one color. Occasionally the miniature soldiers of both sides would converge on and cut into the larger several meters tall units.

Luke saw that Becker's mech was getting overwhelmed by the little nanobots and he had no way of getting them off. The coordinator called down a priority assistance request on his location and not ten seconds later, a ball of Tkiktch insects fell down and pounced on the miniature robots. Even pursuing the nanobots into the holes they made in the mech.

Most of the other members of the invasion force faired better against the tiny mechanical swarm. The samurai wearing the mechsuit spun his lightsword in a complex array of slashes, changing the shape of his blade as he cut apart individual nanobots. The swarms of miniature robots were fodder to the Metallokinesis and Electrokinesis users, but soon they were quickly targetted by the android's lasers. A few of the Tkiktch spit out globs of something sticky at the red clouds of hostiles whenever they came towards them.

Becker's mech shook while it was in the process of rerouting power to deal with damage that the nanobots had caused. Then the rippling wave of the giant android's deconstructor cannon hit him dead on, turning him into a cloud of dust. He didn't feel a thing.

The giant android wobbled slightly as it lost one of it's larger legs, but still continued firing superheated plasma rounds over a wide area to keep the invasion force personal away. It ducked around a corner for cover and the invasion force continued firing at it using rounds that curved mid-flight, but they knew that most the shots would be intercepted by repulsion charges and the ones that hit would do minimal damage. There was no doubt among the invasion force that the repair bots were swarming around it in greater numbers now that the metal monstrosity was in a relatively safe position. The invasion force took the oppourtunity to press into the android's formation while the giant wasn't shooting rounds in every direction.

Without their fire support, the android forces desperately tried to hold but quickly gave ground. Both sides took mounting casualties as the battle reached it's highest point. All units took cover behind the mounds of metal and flesh. The Tkiktch behemoths spewed out their brown gel to make temporary barriers for the exploding larvae to consume. Then the living suicidal projectiles burst out and blew up at least forty androids in a long series of green explosions.

Coordinator Luke T. Ace was sending out commands to specific units when a dense fog crept towards the rear of the invasion force. After a momentary panic, he saw that the Eidolan Contractor Zackery Taylor was at the center of it.

Luke sent a message to him "Bro, where ya been? And what's up with the fog?"

"Oh just taking a swim under several thousand feet of ocean. A recently contracted Eidolan gave Hydrokinesis. It was a bit tricky learning how to make a cloud, but I got it easily enough. By the way, are you still a permanent fixture in that sphere?"

"Not funny. Proceed to this location." Then Luke set a way point near the middle of the field and Zack skated towards it while making a wave underneath his feet. The fog advancing far ahead of him.

Instead of giving him orders, Luke focused on maneuvering the other units while Zack was told the lay of the land by Akma. After several minutes the Eidolan Contractor dove into the red marked clouds of hostile micromachines. Luke panicked out of fear that his friend had just killed himself out of ignorance, but then he saw that Zack was wracking up nanobot kills. The water surrounding him crushed all of the thumbnail sized androids that entered it.

A few of the android regulars opened fired lasers into the fog after elevating the threat level of it. But they failed to hit anything and didn't notice the approaching Eidolans until it was too late. Hroyd pounced thirty feet in the air and landed on one of them, Ether Swipes cleaving the android into five seperate pieces. The Poirauds flew overhead but did little more than disrupt the aim of Xarkris' robotic forces using their magnetic powers before retreating back to the safety of the spiritual ether at the first sign of danger.

Then once Zack had closed the range to a few hundred feet, no less than twenty Okwarg rose up with a seventy foot tall tidal wave that sprung out of the ground. The androids assaulted the wave with a volley of laser fire in what Luke could have sworn to be a panic, but only one of the Okwargs was struck by random chance. The battalion of androids got swept up within the tons of water that overtook them. The lasers continued to fire in every direction and red beams shot out of the tidal wave without any targets. Luke zoomed in on what was going on inside the torrential water to see the Okwargs riding the currents and using their momentum to strike the submerged gun platforms with their boneless yet hard as steel fists. The androids received numerous dents until going lifeless. The coordinator then saw that the objective of the Okwargs was to damage the exterior in order to create a hole, allowing water to get into their interiors thus short circuiting them.

'Zack, your mind is as sharp as ever.'

With a sizeable chunk taken out of the android's formation, the giant android was tactically forced to come out with only partial repairs completed, the holes in it's armor half filled and not all of it's legs were reattached. Then it immediately showered the sphere of water with shrapnel that had sprung up out of nowhere. But there was nothing better than water to slow the momentum of a fast moving object and the Okwargs were completely unharmed from the barrage. Then the deconstructor cannons opened up but their penetrating power was limited and they proved to be ineffective against anything not solid. The mist formed simply turned back into water. A panel on the giant metal monstrosity slid back and a large missle launched.

A bright flash. A deafening boom. A concussive force felt by all on the battlefield. When the coordinator sphere sensors measured the atomic explosion as approximately two miles in diameter. Based on the size of the giant android, it was likely carrying several more high yield warheads.

Luke's screens showed him that Zack had been retreating ever since the giant android came out of cover and he was well outside the blast zone during the detonation. However, the Okwargs had large bodies that did not allow them to escape into the spiritual ether quickly enough and most were incinerated.

Briefly Luke looked over the weapon's information to find that it wasn't nuclear in nature. It was chemical. An unstable isotope named A32456BWNI mixed with an exotic particle named H3432UGH. In his annoyance he remembered that since humans had yet to obtain true understanding of the objects, the names of them would be shrouded by a series of letters and numbers.

Cursing himself for allowing himself to be distracted by his curiosity, Luke spread out the invasion forces to minimize the casualties should another high yield warhead be launched.

The battle turned into a grindfest. The deconstructor cannons turned whatever cover the invasion force could use into mist. Yet the Tkiktch behemoths continued to erect their brown barriers at a rate faster than what the android forces could destroy. A few of the melee units managed to maneuver themselves into a very far forward position and activate their various skills to charge into the enemy formation. Wreaking havoc and drawing fire until expiring.

The giant advanced into an aggresive position on the right flank and Luke chose that time to give orders to Galroop to go on the attack. Zir body turned to acid and melted through several pieces of internal critical hardware. Then the giant used the Barrier skill to encase the slime to protect itself. Soon Galroop ran out of the chemical that allowed zir body to become caustic while ze was trapped. What remained of the nanobots in the vicinity flew into whatever holes they could find to deal with the intruder inside.

Amidst the great many chaotic things happening on the battlefield, Luke perchanced upon Zack's location. He had somehow managed to fly just below the ceiling and make his way all the way to the insane position of being directly above the metal monstrosity and not a single being in the entire battlefield had noticed his movement! Every single one of them had were completely focused on what was in front of them, not what was above!

A fifty foot tall Eidolan slowly materialized out of the Spiritual Ether above the one hundred foot tall giant android. A large shadow came over the metal giant and it looked up to see the Okwarg leader dropping down on it from above. Meryuik generated several tons of water as he fell and his clenched fists of tentacles crushed the center of both the deconstructor cannons in what Luke could only describe as a vertical superman double punch. And then the Okwarg leader was behind it with almost a hundred thousand tons of water floating around him. The gun platform at the top of the giant android slowly rotated a full 180 degree and wasn't nearly fast enough. Meryuik wrapped his tentacle arms around his larger foe's legs and constricted the numerous metal legs using both his massive tree trunk arms and the water under the control of Hydrokinesis. Lasers tore into Meryuik's back from above and half the android forces also did an about face to kill off the Okwarg threatening their most valuable unit, exposing their own rears.

The two godzillas wrestled and Meryuik was blasted with barrages of concentrated laser fire. But his skin was thick from it's size and it was quite hard from living down under the pressurized depths, the androids' fire were merely superheated needles to him. After a tense ten second struggle he ripped off all of the metal monstrosity's legs, leaving it immobile and defenseless before a great volley from Terran Mechas, Tkiktch exploding larvae, and kinesis practitioners. The sheer quantity of destructive forces unleashed spoke volumes about how much the members of the invasion force had had enough of the damn thing. Almost nothing remained of it afterwards.

Meryuik took fifteen full seconds In a green burst of light. Galroop, whom everyone had forgotten about, oozed out of the wreckage, although ze was much smaller after getting hit by several friendly fire energy blasts. And all that was left to do was the clean up of the few remaining androids.

Just before retiring, Luke thought about the battle winning move that Zack did 'Back when we were E-sport professional gamers, I feared him for his ability to surgically strike at the most critical of moments. From his actions just now, he very well may have improved.'

With his mental faculties at the point of exhaustion, Luke watched the last few androids get taken out and he said with exasperation "Victory" then he typed in a set of commands. A few of the tubes running into him began to inject him with concentrated melatonin and he fell into a deep REM sleep.
