-Vol 5: A New Life- -Kenshin goes to the bank!- It was not until 4 pm the next day that Kenshin return to Mito. After reaching there, he made a beeline towards the bank. When he arrived there, he found that it's about to close. Its already 4 pm, the employees of the bank were preparing to go home for the day. But when they saw him arriving while holding a card, they frowned in displeasure. One of them made an eye signal to the security, who in turn nodded and walked forward to stop Kenshin. “Sorry, sir! The bank was about to close, can you please come tomorrow?” the security put his arms around Kenshin’s shoulders and asked with a smile. He was a man about thirty or so years, his build was massive and fitting for security these days. He was an Ex-Hunter who had even raided a level 4 dungeon back in his glorious days. Now that he received a government job, he left that life behind and began working as security here. Power wise, he should be at most level 24 or so. Currently, he had a smile on his face, he would always do this to weak looking people, put his arms around their shoulders and apply some pressure on them. He loved looking at the squirm and struggle on their faces. Some of the smart people would instantly recognize his intention and act accordingly. But since it was always during his duty time, he couldn’t have enough fun with them, but today Kenshin had come at an odd time, how can he lose this chance? “About to close? How can that be? Isn't the closing time of the bank is 5 pm? Its only 4 pm, there's still one hour left.” Disregarding the hand in his shoulders, Kenshin started walking, dragging the security with him. ‘What?’ the security became slackjawed. He was actually being dragged by this weak looking fella? How can it be possible? He was a level 24 hunter back during his glorious days, although he hadn't hit dungeons in decades, his strength shouldn’t have been depleted to the point that he would be dragged along by a frail guy! What's happening here? ‘Don’t tell me he is a hunter that too on a higher level than me!’ the security’s face paled when he thought of that possibility. If by any chance this guy was on a higher level than him and a magic skill user to boot, his life was ruined. As if being electrocuted, he withdrew his hands from his shoulders and stood on his side. With a feeble voice, he asked: “Are you perhaps a hunter?” Kenshin was just too excited to realize the intimidation this man just tried. Hearing his question, he also answered without thinking “Yes. I am working with DCB!” after that, he looked at the man who was standing on the front, “The closing time should be 5 pm right? Why is it closing so early?” “No! Sir, you misunderstood, the bank has closed for commoners. For hunters, it's still open. Come this way, I will take you to the manager, he will handle your matters.” Seeing a situation to redeem himself, the security instantly started guiding him towards the manager’s chambers. “You wait here sir, I will go inside and call the manager to come out.” After that, he went inside the cabin in hasty. A few seconds later, he returned with a balding man with a round body. His eyes were covered by round glasses. “Ah! You must be Mr. Kenshin. Hello! I am Hiroto, the manager of this People’s Federal Bank of Mito region. How can I help you?” the manager was very polite with his speech, he always was. He knew these creatures called hunters were vicious and tend to keep a grudge. They would find one way or other to create problems for him which would be very troublesome. He was a family man, he wouldn’t want any kind of problems for himself. “Hello. I am Kenshin. I have just returned to the country, I want to check my account for the balance. There should be a deposit happening today, I just want to check that out.” Kenshin was polite with his speech. They were talking about 500 million here, he unconsciously became polite. The manager looked at him oddly for a second but nodded soon after seeing a discreet nod from the security. Kenshin might be oblivious to it the first time, but he wasn’t a fool or ignorant. He couldn’t possibly miss it the second time. But he ignored it. “Of course why not? Please come here!” after that, he guides Kenshin with him to his office, the security also came along to see the rank of the hunter he had just messed with. After entering the cabin, Kenshin was made to sit on a sofa to the side of the table while the manager came to his side with a laptop. The security sat in front of Kenshin, to his side, sat the manager. “Can I have the passbook as well as the license please?” the manager politely asked. “Of course!” pretending to be fumbling with his coat pocket, Kenshin accessed the inventory and pulled out the passbook along with the new license he got from DCB after joining it. the moment both manager and the security saw that purple crystal card, the hunter’s license, their face changed colours faster than a chameleon. ‘He really is a magic skill user! That too working for the government! Fuck!!!’ it was the security’s inner thoughts. Outside, he only sweated like a pig. ‘Wow! He is a magic skill user, I am now working with a magic skill user who works for a government, and he has an account in my branch! My promotion is set after I complete this transaction.’ The manager, on the contrary, was pleased about it. If the office would know that he had successfully dealt with a magic skill user that works for the government, they would surely give him the promotion that was due for a few months already. “Thank you very much!” his attitude made a hundred eighty turn, and politeness seems to come from his very bones. Holding the passbook and the ID card like he was holding a holy relic, he started to open his bank’s database. He carefully entered all the details, and even triple checked it for any errors on his part. Within seconds, his entire transaction history displayed on his screen. The glaring part was the recent addition, a deposit of 500 million golds was made recently by a party whose name was private. He didn’t care about the depositor, he was more concern about the man sitting in front of him. The man who could be called a rich man in this small city of Mito, or probably even in this whole Ibaraki Prefecture. With his current capital, he could almost walk sideways even in the whole of Japan, let alone small places like this. ‘This is my chance. If I can form a good relationship with him, my life was secure.’ The manager thought as his face widened into a smile. He turned around his laptop and showed Kenshin the screen. “Sir, look here. A deposit of five hundred million was made a few days ago to your account. It was by the same person or organization that usually deposits or withdraws some amount of golds into your account. Is that organization, your beneficiary?” “Hmm! You can say that. He is indeed my beneficiary. Well, it is a secret organization, so I hope you keep this a secret. Or else…you understand right?” although he said it lightly, the manager understood the underlying meaning. With his over two hundred points in wisdom and intelligence, how can he not fabricate something for the deposits and withdrawals done by the system? “No..no! Sir. Don’t worry. My mouth will be sealed tighter than the treasury box inside there.” the manager said pointing towards the small cabin to the left of his room. “If you understand that’s good.” although he said that, Kenshin also took a deep breath of relief after seeing the massive deposit. “Well, then Mr Hiroto, can I convert ten million golds into dollars? Like, right now?” after that Kenshin did a cool pose while looking at the manager, who for some reason started to sweat profusely. ‘It's settled! My promotion! It’s settled!!!’ the manager couldn’t help but jump in joy inside his heart. If he makes this transaction, he will surely provide a meritorious service to the bank itself. Getting a promotion would be the least he would receive. “Of course sir, right away!” suppressing all the joy in his heart, he said in a professional tone. Of course, it was just for show.

Many Minded
Synopsis: Issa Pyxis, Spacer orphan and illegal heretic, graduated from living on the streets to running with a gang years ago, but now it looks like that’s all going to change. Her inheritance, more specifically who—or what—she is, is catching up with her, and on a planet with the Emperor’s inquisitors slinking around in every shadow, nowhere is safe and no one can be trusted. What will she do? A cyberpunk story about identity, loneliness, covert infiltration, evil dystopias, and much more! Features: - Cyborgs and cyberpunk galore - This is indented to be somewhat “rational” and “hard” Sci-Fi story - Original Fiction however parts of my worldbuilding are inspired by other Sci-Fi stories (duh) Rationale: The future is cool, AIs are kickass, and questions about consciousness are simultaneously existential and yet unanswered. To me, this story is a vehicle for exploring these topics, and also, I wanted to write a story where the protagonist was unafraid of themselves and where their self is more like a git-repo than a meat computer. Disclaimer: This story primarily takes place in what we’d describe as a “cyberpunk dystopia” with some extra technocracy, autocracy, and religious fervor thrown into the mix, so there will be some “grittiness” in this story. Caveat emptor. Also, [insert your favorite boilerplate “views expressed” disclaimer here]. I shouldn’t need to say this, but the main character and other characters in my story can be wrong on occasion (gasp!) and the way they view the world isn’t always objective truth (if such a thing even exists) nor do their views and opinions necessarily reflect the views of me, the author.
