-Vera’s Surprise!-
Kenshin and Vera sat facing each other while the snow bore hung in the middle above the fire. The atmosphere was a bit awkward with neither trying to start a conversation. At this time, Kenshin really felt uncomfortable about this weird silence. Even though he wanted to break it, he didn’t know how. Fortunately, Vera decided to start a conversation and end this odd silence.
“Kenshin, can I ask you a question?”
“Of course.”
“After I lost my consciousness, what exactly happened?” she was very curious about this and also that purple streak that saved her from being stomped to death. Although she knew except her and Kenshin, no one was around, but still, she wanted to confirm her speculations. But in her heart for some odd reason, she wished that purple streak to be Kenshin. She wanted to hear that it was him who saved her.
Hearing her question, Kenshin stiffened a little. He knew this question was coming ever since he saved her and was mentally preparing for it all this time. For his plan to succeed he needs her help, and to gain her trust it was necessary for her to know about everything. But Kenshin simply couldn’t tell her about his uncanny abilities, neither he could tell her that he had killed one of her summons approaching level 150.
For one she wouldn’t believe him. And even if she by chance believed him and in a later date pass on this knowledge to some high official, his future would be miserable. In the worst case scenario, he would be captured and become one of the test subjects to some lunatic scientists. After all the gap that separated those below and above level 100 couldn’t be surmounted merely by having a powerful skill. And until now nobody had succeeded in this endeavour, not even the famed Aoi, and she got a Divine Skill at her disposal.

Before coming here, he heard the news that Aoi Yamazaki was now level 99, on the verge of taking that colossal leap that would separate her from ordinary mortals in the world. She would officially become one of the powerhouses that had the qualification to make a decision regarding the world as a whole.
If even she couldn’t surmount that gap then how can anyone else? If the world suddenly has to know that there was a person who could overcome this gap where even Aoi had failed, their reactions won't be as hospitable as what it was to Aoi. Besides after gaining the power himself Kenshin came to realize one thing, in this world, Aoi might not be the only Divine Skill user. There must be others with the ability, but due to this exact reason, they choose to hide it, like how Kenshin was doing. At this time even Kenshin began to suspect the origin of his System.
He was afraid that Divine Skills weren’t as simple as they look. There might be an underlying reason behind its appearance. Like how his system and its quest function works. All those compulsory quests that appeared till date, Kenshin realized that one way or other it helped the world to avoid some kind of crisis. Its as if he had become some kind of lackey to some god that wanted to make the world balanced.
In summary, he had become an uninterested hero that was forced to save the world time and again.
And if his system was a Divine Skill then what about others? What was their Divine Skill? What purpose did they have to serve? And in the end what was Aoi’s Divine Skill? Till today nobody knew about it, not even the senior officials of DCB of Japan. Thinking about all this made Kenshin frown, he couldn't help but feel that he was manipulated by someone all this time. He really hated this feeling.

Looking at Vera seriously, he decided to speak the half truth.
“It's not that I don’t want to tell you, but this is related to one of my skills. I simply cannot reveal it’s existence to anyone.”
“I see. Then leave it!” she looked visibly upset but hid it with a cool face.
“Sigh! You didn’t let me finish. I am saying that since it’s related to one of my skills, I can’t just reveal it to anyone. But you have saved my life twice while I only saved yours once. That’s a debt needed to be paid by me. I will tell you about it but please take it as my request, please don’t speak about it to anyone.” These words honestly came from his heart. She had saved his life twice while ready to sacrifice her life a third time to save him. He had only saved her once. He felt like owing a debt to her, and to someone like Kenshin, this debt was even heavier than a mountain in his heart.
Hearing Kenshin’s honest words that were laced with his true feelings, her heart couldn’t help but skip a beat. But with a solemn face, she nodded and placed her right hand above her heart.
“Don’t worry. I, Orlov Vera promise on my honour that I would never reveal what you are going to tell me today. If by any chance these words leak from my mouth, I will pay it by blood and have the life of the listener no matter who it is.” Her solemn promise made Kenshin so surprise that he nearly fell off from his seat.
‘This woman is very stiff!’ “You don’t have to take that kind of promise!” Kenshin frowned as he spoke.
“No, let me do this. This promise will remind me to never make this mistake ever in future.” Vera was very serious when she spoke about this, she was someone who valued relations more than anyone thanks to her sad background. When Kenshin asked her to not talk about his secret, she feared that her verbal promise won't make Kenshin believe her. That's why she took the oath impulsively. She didn’t want to be hated by Kenshin no matter what.
“Is that so! Sigh*” after sighing, Kenshin looked at Vera, and Vera too looked at him intently, urging him to speak. But suddenly she noticed something weird. Kenshin, who was sitting in front of her started shrinking. But on closer inspection, she noticed that he wasn’t shrinking but submerging. He was immersing inside the ground like how a submarine enters the water. It was indeed bizarre for her to see a skill like that. Finally, in front of her watchful eyes, Kenshin fully entered the ground while making a plop sound in the end. The weirdest thing was that after he wholly entered the hard snowy ground, it rippled like a water body before becoming solid.
She was very dumbfounded after seeing this skill. Just as she was about to inspect the ground Kenshin was sitting on earlier, she suddenly felt like someone grabbed her leg, then before she could make a noise, she was already inside the ground, being hugged by Kenshin. This time he didn’t dare to embrace her intimately, he only held her shoulders and hug her platonically.
As for Vera, she tightly closed her eyes and mouth, afraid that something would happen to them. Seeing this, Kenshin couldn’t help but laugh in his heart.

Entangled Fates Book 1 - Quantum Beginnings
“By far, the greatest danger of Artificial Intelligence is that people conclude too early that they understand it.” —Eliezer Yudkowsky Hey all, we're moving over to book 2. This content is in a state of transition. The book is now availble on Amazon (includes extra chapters): https://www.royalroad.com/amazon/B07W1534R8 Artificial intelligence was nearly mankind’s last invention. AI took off like a rocket, then when it racked up an impressive death toll, it crashed before it could blossom and took most high-tech industries with it. Resistance and fears became deep-set. Two decades after the infamous Rev. 4.6 incidents, humanity hasn’t quit dreaming of the wealth and power that could be at their fingertips. A new generation of mega-corporations rose from the ashes. When one melds a quantum computer to a barely functional mental patient as a PR move, there are those who seek to profit, those who want to destroy it, and Alex. Alex Sage is a typical college student trying to keep up his grades and maybe find a meaningful connection with the fairer sex. Then, an automated semi crashes into his home, killing his family and turning his head into a pin cushion in the process. Alex awakens to find most of his memories gone and an illegal AI hidden in his brain implant. Now the pet project of a tech billionaire and heavily in debt, Alex struggles to stay valuable enough to be kept online. Still grappling with the repercussions of his injuries, and threats from a dangerous anti-augmentation political movement, there are no easy answers and threats loom around every corner. Alex must use whatever resources he can to escape from under the thumb of a ruthless corporation, while keeping those he comes to love safe. Chapters will stay up on RRL until Aug 10. It'll go up on Kindle Unlimited after that. How do you get those extra chapters I didn't have planned for RR? If you want them, they'll be in the published book. Book 2 will still make sense without them - I made sure of that. But... isn't $3 a lot for extra chapters? Think of it as tipping me for a good job and you'd also be getting my eternal thanks. If you enjoyed it so much that the idea of missing out a few chapters haunts you, I did my job as an author and made an engaging story. What's in those extra chapters? Resolving a few issues, set up for the cybernetic revolution, a rather intense sex scene with a new partner, revelations of who's really pulling strings, and a bit of set up for book 2. Complaints that people missed out on it when it was published here won't help (sorry!). I posted this for the folks who helped me shape the book, which is you all! (Again, yay!) But... Why! Why not keep it all on RR forever? My editor likes being paid for one. For two, I'd like the ability to get broader readership. If I break even on editor costs, I'll be incredibly happy. What about book 2? Drafts for Book 2 will go up around Sept 10. My draft of Book 2 is done, and it will be handed to the editor once Book 1 is published. Feedback has been even more positive. Beta readers devoured it and wanted more. I'll add a link to Book 2 once it's up on RR. I'm more or less, using you all for Beta Readers, so you get it before it's "canon" and edited. I invite active and meaningful feedback during this process. In return, you get early access to chapters. That does mean that the book content or plot might be adjusted before it gets published as I refine it. Sex Y/N? Yes. I heard the feedback, 90% wanted it explicit. You all will get the "full" experience. Will I dump all of book 2 here? Honestly, I'm not sure yet. At a minimum, it'll be up to the 75% mark as we collect feedback, much like what I did with book 1. It really depends on how good the feedback is and how nice people are. Lots of support + meaningful feedback to make it better = higher likelihood you get all the book. Will be it up here indefinitely? No, it'll probably go up on KU at some point, but I'll make sure there's enough time for a large readership to grab it here. Then we move to book 3 which already is around 60K words already. What about other adventures in the same universe/characters? Yep. Absolutely. Nothing ready to share yet though. I plan to keep those side chapters and more slice of life stories as RR exclusive. Since I'm carving this off in book-sized segments, I'll have to figure out where those disconnected story arcs belong. I'm open to suggestions.

At The Lions Gate
In the 20th century America reinvented itself. Devastated by depression, scarred by war, rocked by a revolution, Americans banded together to preserve their country and their freedom. They had faith in themselves, faith in one another, and for those who believed…faith in God. This novel tells the story of one American who lived through those turbulent years….years that would test his character and the character of a nation. For Josh Sanders it begins in 1935. A star athlete in school, pro football is a ticket out of poverty during the Great Depression; but when his father, a WWI veteran, is killed during a robbery, Josh’s spirit is broken, and with it his boyhood dream. To honor his father Josh joins the war effort in 1942, distinguishing himself as a fighter pilot, until a fateful decision near the end of the war changes the course of his life once again. But many years later, after a stint as a boxer and a failed marriage, Josh finds his calling…at a time when the country is at war with itself. The year is 1968. King and Kennedy have been killed, race riots are breaking out, and Vietnam has become an albatross, causing massive protests across the country. In the streets of San Francisco Josh watches a crowd of students march for peace. As a veteran he’s conflicted, toward the war and those who oppose it. But when he encounters Rosy Goldin, a spirited young protester in need of help, a voice from the past calls him to action. His good intentions are soon tested when Rosy falls in love with the fugitive anti-war activist Erick White, a young man determined to oppose the war at all costs, against the wishes of his own father. Fearful of what happens to Rosy, Josh confronts Erick, unwilling to be part of his plan to escape…until he meets the boy’s father. A high-powered criminal attorney, Karl White is also a flag-waving patriot demanding that his son follow the law. But as White makes his case Josh is jolted by a painful war-time memory, a crisis of conscience that will soon determine the fate of Rosy Goldin and Erick White.
