《I Will Be Recognized》75. No Tentacles Allowed

“Run! What the h*ll are you doing!” I shouted at the moron who was standing in place.
“It’s the effects of Mental Corruption that she can’t move.” Said the guy beside me.
“Mental Corruption? Then how can you move?” I asked.
“I have resistance to it. The real question should be how you can move.” He looked at Rachel and said, “just ditch her, we won’t be able to run away if we help her.”
Ignoring him, I ran to Rachel’s side and did the same thing as last time, throwing her on my back in a fireman’s carry.
I turned to the guy who I had expected to have run away, but he was actually waiting for us to catch up despite what he said.
—x minutes earlier—
It's been about a week since we got here. Rachel and I have been steadily making our way down the stream in hopes of finding signs of other people.
I figured out a way to create a portable tent with the leaves and wood. With the storage ring, I could store it as well. At first, I didn’t think it would work since it was a combination of multiple items, but it seems I was wrong. One more thing to clarify was that the system’s inventory could only store items bought from the system itself, so the storage ring was quite useful.
On a side note, ever since I unlocked the sealed function of the True Dragon Eyes, I had been able to see some weird things on my status.

‘What was this soul thing?’
As I thought about the countless meanings behind it, I heard a loud screeching. There was no mistaking it; it was the noise of a homo sapiens. There were other people in this forest.
Rachel seemed to have heard it too as she turned her head to me as if asking if we should check it out.
I gave a simple nod, and we headed into the deep areas of the forest, away from the stream we had been following.
After a good minute or so of walking, we arrived at the scene. There was a small group of four people fighting one of those slug f*ckers. From the looks of how it was going, it didn’t seem like they would win. Two of them were frozen from fright and the other two were trying their best to fight it off.
Either way, I figured if I helped them here, they may be able to lead us out of this forest. Unlike the last encounter with the slug, I was fairly confident now that I could kill it. If I couldn’t beat it physically, I could just spam Fire Balls or something.
I took out the Molten Spear of Mutilation, preparing to dart straight in and land a surprise attack. From what I saw, it didn’t seem like physical damage could harm the slug much, so I was hoping that the burning effect of the spear would cause some damage when paired with a sweep. Thinking about that, I decided to bide my time for the perfect moment.

‘Now.’
Just as a tentacle latched onto one of the men, I dashed in and performed a sweep, aiming at that tentacle. As I had planned, it cut the tentacle directly off but missed the main body of the slug.
The slug, being aware of my presence, instead of coming to attack me who was the greater threat, it continued its tentacle onslaught on the group of men.
I continued sweeping until every one of its tentacles was cut off. Finally realizing my threat, instead of coming to me, it blasted into the air...
When were these f*ckers capable of jumping!?
‘Sh*t.’
I hurdled over to the side expecting it to jump on me but it wasn’t aiming for me, but the group of men. What kind of troll was this? One of those guys could avoid the slug, but the other three weren’t as lucky. Watching them inside the jello like body of the slug, I had to admit that it was really repulsive. They were decomposing at a steadfast rate inside the body of the slug. Was the slug acidic as well?
There was nothing I could do to help them when they were already dissolved into skeletons. Dang was that fast. I should try my best to keep the fight against it far ranged.
I threw another sweep at it with my spear which cut its body in half but it was able to reattach its body back onto itself again. It made its way to me while gathering the fallen tentacles. Sweeping it worked, so I kept going at it with the sweeping. As my next sweep was about to land, the slug started to shine in a bright golden color for some reason.
When the sweep struck the slug, instead of cutting through it, it just made a slight deformation before disappearing. Nani?
As the shine disappeared, the slug appeared to be much darker than before.
It looked at me.
“You... Me. Remembers.” It said.
‘Since when the h*ll could monsters talk?’ I thought as I threw a few more sweeps.
Just like before, it only made a slight indent on the slimy body. Other than being a literal fortress, this thing could also regenerate. Just how was I supposed to beat it?
“Sh*t, it just evolved. Only Mythical creatures can talk. We don’t stand a chance against it.” Said the guy who survived. Wait, how did he get over to my side without me noticing?
‘Appraise.’

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
