《The Aether Universe》Chapter 39

Anna stared at the spell that was currently flying towards her. It seemed like she was in slow motion as the spell approached her ever so slowly. She didn't feel it before, but she could feel the mana from the spell now and it was dangerous.
Anna knew that this was a last desperation attack from Rargos and it worked. She was baited into attacking him and if the spell hit her, then she would die, and fail the trial.
"The winner is pretty clear, isn't it?" one of the women said to the other, which nodded in response.
She tried her best to dodge the attack, but it only needed to graze her for the spell to take effect. Rargos smirked as the spell approached her and ultimately touched her skin.
Anna screamed in pain as she fell to the ground. Injuries of various kinds appeared on her body as she coughed up blood. Her eyes started leaking blood. The tentacles that were holding Rargos disappeared as Anna lost concentration.
Rargos smiled and laughed. "Finally, I can go to the land of the living."
Rargos's face had a happy expression, but that expression soon disappeared.
As Anna laid on the ground, her heart beat its final beat and her heart beat no more. Her nose was bleeding, blood was coming out of her ears, but something odd was happening.
Even though she was seemingly dead, her mana grew and grew, way beyond her normal capacity. Her eyes turned pitch black, and her forehead split apart, revealing a third eye. Gigantic bat wings made of darkness appeared from her back. Her skin had black parts corrupted by the darkness.
Long, sharp claws made of darkness appeared on her hands, and a pointed tail appeared behind her.
"W-what?" Rargos was truly alarmed. In his long life in the underworld, he had never seen something like this.

The women spectators were also staring at the scene with wide eyes, intrigued with what was happening.
"Have you seen something like this?"
"It's called corruption, and more common with the darkness element, but what's weird is that I've only seen this happen with people above level 1000."
Anna grew fangs on her teeth, and her legs started changing to that of a cheetah's to move faster. Long, black horns appeared atop her head, longer than Rargos's own horns.
She slowly stood up, staring at Rargos. Frightened, Rargos fired another dark arts spell, much weaker than the last, but would still injure someone.
Anna smiled, revealing her fangs and sharp teeth as the spell touched her body, and just dissipated into the air not affecting Anna in one bit.
Using her now enhanced legs, she approached Rargos, who had teleported away with his remaining mana. In an instant, she appeared in front of him and grabbed him by the neck. She was about to crush his neck then and there, when she got a cruel idea.
Using her sharp, pointed tail, she stabbed holes in the demon's body, blood coming out of every hole. Anna let out a deep, and sinister laugh, clearly enjoying the scene.
After a few stabs, Anna had hit some of his major organs and Rargos died shortly after, meaning that Anna had completed the trial, but Anna, if she was even Anna, didn't care and continued playing with the dead corpse.
"The trial is complete, you have passed. Stop this."
Anna yelled at the woman and continued with what she was doing. While assaulting the dead corpse, she noticed something weird coming out of the corpse. A glowing, white orb.
She grabbed the white orb and placed it into her mouth, swallowing it out of instinct.

"That's impossible. Quick, subdue her and collect the soul before she digests it."
What Anna had eaten was Rargos's soul, and there can only be one soul, so if a soul was destroyed, then they were as good as dead and wouldn't even go to the underworld.
The women stood up and rushed towards Anna, who was patting her belly.
"Sleep."
Hearing the words, Anna had a sudden urge to sleep. Her limbs didn't respond to her instructions, and her eyelids became heavy and eventually closed as she fell asleep.
The women's hand went through Anna's stomach and grabbed the white soul, sending it back to reality.
"What a pain. Is she going to go back to normal?"
"Yes, but corruption is a blessing and a curse. It'll save you from death, but you'll be a bystander in your own body until the darkness gets bored or decides to leave," she explained, fixing up Anna's burned and ripped clothes for her. "But she can learn to control it."
Anna's body slowly returned to normal. The horns, tail, fangs, and claws disappeared.
When Anna awoke, she found herself in a forest, and a series of notifications appeared in front of her.

OUTLIERS
30 years ago brought the first superhumans, regular people given great power seemingly at random. 15 years ago brought the paranormals, stranger and often weaker in their abilities, but far more numerous. Today, the world holds its breath . . . Or at least, it should. Most people, though, are just trying to get on with their lives; some successfully, some less so. It's a sensible goal, but it can be hard when shadowy conspiracies and worldwide N.G.O.s are turning your city into a proxy battleground over world-shattering secrets. It’s bad enough when you’ve just woken up with superpowers and terrorists are holding your school hostage. It’s even worse if you’re an illegal vigilante stuck in the middle of the whole Charlie Foxtrot after a supervillain raid drops vital information in your lap. For Hannah Eiling-Kingsford and Flint Perez, life is about to get a lot harder to get on with. ----- Outliers is a superhero story. Okay, so not so much superhero as vaguely superhero-ish. It's about two teenagers dealing with, among other things, new powers, psycho exes, mysterious datapads and a giant, secret war between the foremost powers-that-be, over information that could forever change the world. Again. You know, normal teenage stuff. Outliers contains some foul language and mild sexual references. It is a complete story, and can also be read on its own website.
