Chapter 0104
“Now do you understand how great it is to be my Successor?” Cardis puffed up his chest with the pride Tempest previously trampled on.
“Yes, Google sensei, sir.”
Whack.
“Where does that mind of yours wander to? Call me Cardis or teacher or master.” Cardis said while grumbling under his breath, “Who is this Google sensei the little midget is referring to?”
Tempest wisely kept her mouth shut.
“Tell me, what type of spells do you want to learn first?”
“Escape spells.”
Cardis rubbed Tempest’s head with affection. His airheaded little Successor was paying attention. She learned the number one rule all mages in the Magus Alliance swear by - if you can’t win, run.
Tempest would eventually learn the actual number one rule all mages in the Magus Alliance swear by - if you can’t win, throw out your premade cannon fodder then run for help.
The logic behind the saying is a sound one. If you can’t win it, what made you think you can out run it? If you run, how long do you think you would last? It’s best to run to a more powerful mage and ask for help.
The issue with the enemies coming back with a more powerful back up rarely occurs when it involves mages. Over the millennium, mages have learned never send a weakling after the hero. They’d only serve as experience point for the hero to level up on. When a mage comes back with backs up, they come back with the most powerful mage or mages they know. It’s generally the latter as mages love a gang fight when the odds is in their favor. It had something to do with venting their frustration when they were the weak rabbit.
“I have several movement type spells tailored to wind and lightning mages. You can learn those or you can try your hand at modifying your current spell.”
“I’ll do both.” Why chose one when she can have it all? Tempest might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but she figured with the embodiment of elemental theory at her disposal, she’ll be modifying spells to her conveniences in no time. She needs basic spells to tide her over until then.
Cardis was about to scold Tempest for attempting more than she can handle but he remembered who she is.
A True Daughter of Storm. A much loved Child of the Spirits. A mage so blessed by the spirits, the mysteries of any spells in their elements would be unraveled in no time.
Cardis immediately cast a wind spell to show Tempest the rune words and spell configuration. “This spell is called [A Whisper of Wind]. It allows the caster to move at the speed of sound. Make sure to copy the rune words exactly as it appeared. A spell can not be release if it is spelled wrong and the caster can suffer backlashes from the spell.”

Once Cardis was sure Tempest memorized the spell in its entirety, Cardis release the spell. He moved faster than the eye can see. One moment he was in front of Tempest; the next moment he was over a kilometer away.
“... Ventus, how much does the law of this world differs from Earth?” Tempest was sure the speed of sound back on Earth was around 343 meters per second give or take a few meters.
She remembers the numbers because she was watching a science program and they were talking about MACH 1 and MACH 2. MACH 1 is the speed at which sound travels, around 343 meters per second.
Cardis spells should have enable him to move at the speed of sound, yet he travelled around 1,000 meters per second or 1 km per second.
On Earth, sound waves are affected by the wind, air density, temperature, pressure, humidity and gas mixture. Earth is in a low tier realm with minuscule amount of ambient mana, so low to the point where even the most sophisticated machinery can not pick it up. Most of Earth’s scientific knowledge or universal principles never took into consideration the presence of an unknown force such as mana. Earth’s knowledge and theories about the universe tend to be correct in absence of mana. Once you add in an unknown factor, then the number is skewed.
Cardis appeared in front of Tempest and flicked her forehead. “Quit going into a daze and pay attention.”
“I was in a daze. Despite how I look, I’m not an airhead.” Cardis gave her Tempest a skeptical look. “I’m not an airhead. I was speaking to my wind spirit just now.”
“...You can speak to your spirits with going into a mediative stance?”
“I can speak to Ventus, my wind spirit, anywhere there is wind. If I want in-depth information, then I have to go into a mediative stance.”
“Then the stupid look you-”
“Hey, I’ll have you know my natural charm shines at all time.”
“-have on your face is you speaking to your spirits?”
“Ugh, you weren’t listening to word I’ve said haven’t you?”
“I have been listening. You need to calm down and stop interrupting me.”
Tempest shot him a disbelieving glance, which Cardis ignored splendidly. “I am a bit out of it when I speak to them. They are careful enough not to distract me when I’m busy, but they make up for the time they are silent by nagging me whenever I’m not doing anything important.”
Hey!
Hey!
Hey! We don’t nag you. Three protest by Ventus to present Tempest’s three spirits. The spirits take exception to Tempest’s negative view of them. This was their favored daughter. They couldn’t stand the idea of their beloved child viewing them in anything but a good light.
Their idea of a ‘good light’ greatly differs from what Tempest views as a ‘good light.’

“I see.” Perhaps the only person who can truly understand Tempest’s plight is another True Child of the Spirits. There was a period of time when the spirits tried to speak to Cardis in all odd hours of the day. He shut them up right and quick. His wind spirits still try to talk to him without him going into a meditative stance. Cardis does his best to ignore them.
With regards to handling her spirits, Cardis is the best person to teach Tempest how to handle them. He chose not to give her any pointers now because Tempest need to learn how to manage them on their own. It isn’t his place to interfere.
“Can I play around with the spell? Can I?”
“Suit yourself.”
Tempest waste no time casting [A Whisper of Wind]. After two attempts, Tempest already master the spell, from changing direction during the spell period to judging the distance she moved.
Cardis watched from the side, not surprise at her ability to grasp a new spell. A “Damn favored Daughter of Storm,” comes out of his mouth here and there, but overall, he’s quite numb to Tempest’s ability.
A spell a normal mage takes a three or four years to master, his little Successor succeeds in two to three tries.
“Cardis, teach me another spell!” Tempest begged after traveling around the clearing several times over.
“I’ll show you my escape spell. Inspect the spell closely and try to grasp the underlying principle of the spell then try to apply the concept to your own element.” Tempest’s ability to master spells is good. So good, in fact, it would be a waste of their times for Tempest to learn premade spells all Red and Orange Mages learn.
Cardis cast his special escape spell. It took him over three hundred years, making adjustments here and there, test the spell over and over again, before he got a working model he was satisfied with.
“Ah, I get it now. You used the theory of velocity from the wind element as the core. [A Whisper of Wind] might be a part of the wind element but there is a limit to speed which sound travels. No matter how much you improve [A Whisper of Wind], you can not surpass the basic limit due to the nature of sound in the first place. By using the theory of velocity, which is speed in itself, you can modify the spell without worrying about the conflicting nature of the spell without worry about conflicting elements. The other wind type spell you added was used to reduce wind resistance. By eliminating natural resistance to movement, the speed in which an object moves it increase.
“On the same note, an earth type spell was added with what I’d assume as anti-gravity properties to reduce the drag the natural magnetic properties generated by the planet. One of the spell circle included a magnetic force to pull you towards a certain direction.
“A fire type spell was added to increase the speed by way of thrust or momentum. I think it is a form a combustion spell. I need to learn the language of the fire spirits to know for sure.”
Cardis clenched his teeth as Tempest correctly analyze his spell, the spell it took him over a thousand years to create. It took the little brat less than an hour to breakdown the effect of each spell circle.
No wonder the rate of near death experiences increase exponentially in proportion to their abilities. They don’t know how to be low key. If they are so blunt with their assessment, no wonder they make enemies left and right. They shine so brightly in everything they do, they shame the so-called expert into jealous rages. Cardis was tempted to give Tempest a beating and she was his precious Successor.
“Damn beloved True Daughter of Storm. Learn how leave a man his pride won’t you? You won’t be able to get married if you go spouting off anything and everything that comes to your mind.” Cardis grumbled in his heart.
At this rate, he won’t have anything to teach her anymore.
She already called him useless. How much lower can he fall in her eyes?
“Cardis, just watch me. I’m going to come up with my own escape spell.” Tempest bragged and immediately got to work.
Tempest decided to use the first spell [Velocity] and second spell [Reduce Wind Resistance.] Cardis showed her as the foundation. They are both wind mages. Might as well use spells proven to work.
Tempest can’t use combustion as method for propulsion. She could use compressed water as a form of propulsion.
Tempest go the idea from watching a cartoon when the main character made and launches water rockets as a hobby.
A bottle is partly filled with water then sealed. Compressed air is then added to the bottle to pressurize it. The seal on the nozzle of the rocket is then released and rapid expulsion of water occurs at high speeds until the propellant has been used up and the air pressure inside the rocket drops to atmospheric pressure. The expulsion of the water thus can cause the rocket to leap a considerable distance into the air.
Tempest will call the new spell [Water Propulsion].
Adding an electrical component to her spell right now is impossible. Tempest knows the general basic knowledge of wind and water through watching the tv show and looking up information from the internet. The only thing she remembers about lightning and electricity is the story about Benjamin Franklin flying a kite.
Tempest immediately cast her three circle spell.
The experience reminds Tempest of a song sang by ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic for the Tarzan parody. It went like this:
George, George, George of the jungle
Strong as he can be
Ahhh
Watch out for that tree…
“Tempest, watch out for that tr…”
