《The Immortal》72: Guild

I am first led up by stairs. A lot of them. Five whole floors underground was our position. Once we reach what is the ground floor, she asks me to stop.

"What for?" I ask.

"Forgive me my lord, I thought you would not want to be observed, so I will scout ahead".

I cast read. Noone in the room ahead of us.

"It's alright, it's clear" I say.

She looks a little puzzled, but simply nods and guide me. Walking behind her, I wonder how we look. The clothes she brought me was a robe matching her own, and there is a hood on it. She has worn it drawn over her head from the beginning so I mimicked her.

After I am led outside, I am astonished. The stone roads I were used to were mere flat stone laid down together, but the road here is neat cut stones with an inter-locking pattern. The houses I were used to seeing were either entirely wood, had wood framing and were at most three stories tall, but there are plenty building here, that look to be between five and seven stories, judging the by the windows.

We went out a side route, but I also look to the temple we exited. It is absolutely massive. Maybe a 300 feet tall spire, and several lesser ones. It may not be very much going by my world's original standard but it was completely alien when compared to before I was sealed. Technology really developed quickly.

We enter a street, that is overflowing with people, so much so that I repeatedly have to rub shoulders with people going in the opposite direction. Some streets have signage, most depicting a cart with a red cross over it. "For pedestrians only" it's pretty easy to get the meaning.

We finally arrive at what I assume is the hunter's guild. I judge so, because even though it is far more intricate, with a few extra elements, it has the same usual base symbol of a crossed sword and spear. As we enter, there is a queue to the counter, so we go line up. As we do, I hear some gossip here and there.

"What business do acolytes have here?"

"The hero's dead! What do you think the next one's going to be?"

"The alchemists guild got fined yet again. Why are they always doing such shady shit?"

Is a sample of the most interesting bits I hear. I wonder what the hero is, if it is some sort of special hunter or military position? And are we dressed as acolytes?

As we reach the counter, I state my purpose.

"I need to go to a specific dungeon. Can I borrow your map?"

The clerks is a middle-aged man.

"Sorry, only for registered hunters" I feared this.

"Then, can I register?"

"You need to take an apprenticeship if you wanna be a hunter, though few are actually taken in by capable people here in Roxas, you would do better to start in a smaller city. Alternatively you can take an exam for ten asti."

Fuck, the currency is different too. I have no idea how much it is. I look to my female companion.

"Do you have any, eh.... What was your name again?"

"Acolytes are forbidden from having personal possessions my lord, I am truly sorry." She should stop looking so afraid all the time, it's making me feel guiltier about using her misconceptions to help me. She also didn't say her name.

"If you have no business, move over, the traffic is heavy today." The clerk snarks.

"Please listen to me, I am terribly strong, can't we work some deal out?" I plead.

"Sorry, youngster, I am bound by guild policy, please move over" I dejectedly make way for the others, but one makes a fuss.

"Please sir, you must, you don't know who he is!" It is my escort doing so.

"Hey it's fine, don't bother him." I pull her away. Ah, she is shaking again, maybe she thought she did something wrong.

"What is your name?" I ask once again.

"Amina..: I am Amina..." She says quietly.

"Nice to meet you, I am..." I wonder, I can give myself my own name now. I think a little, but realize I am ultimately more comfortable with Yos than Brian. "Yos, I am Yos". Amina simply nods in response.

"Amina, how would one make money in a hurry?"

"I... I am sorry lord, I have no clue, I have been in the temple all my life" Huh.

"Then how did you know the hunter's guild had maps?"

"That is common knowledge, lord. Ah, not that I would make my lord out to be ignorant, please forgive this foolish servant." This girl is hella weird. She still thinks I am going to destroy humanity, and she is dead set on helping me, as long as I spare her. I don't think many people would literally betray the entire human race so easily.

I get an idea. I gather a little air in my lungs and sound out to the people chatting around tables.

"Any of you pansies got some ill-placed confidence in your strength?" I get a lot of mean looks.

"What the hell is an acolyte saying?" A man says as he rises up. He is both taller and wider than me and looks like a seasoned veteran.

"Ten Asti says I can beat you in an arm-wrestling match!" I am brilliant.

"The hell is an arm-wrestling match?" He says with a sneer. Shit.
