《The Immortal》38: Nightwatch

I approach Kamas to tell him of "my discovery".

"Hey old Kamas, I was kind of anxious last night, since an attack may come and I repeatedly woke during the night. Once it was about to get bright, I stayed up still tired, but as morning came around, my gift seems to have activated and cleared me right up. So I can stay on night watch and still be fine."

Kamas makes a difficult face. "Look, it is obvious Atna told you, else you wouldn't have spent the entire day talking together."

I kind of just end up admitting fault by instinctually looking away, which in turn makes me embarrassed.

"By the way, what did you say to her? It is like her animosity just disappeared."

"Oh, I merely told her the truth. That her attitude was impertinent, childish and would hold her back. She was simply mad at you for being praised as being better than her, but I got her to see that was no reason to hate you, but rather a reason to imitate you and grow together."

"If you know, then I guess I will ask, why didn't you tell me of my gift?"

Kamas looks a little sad or thoughtful, before he nods and starts to talk.

"Bosir and I once had a master, much like we are to you now. He had a powerful gift, one that seemingly wouldn't allow him to break. He even held an exhibition once where he took down a monster completely naked in Roxburg. People not only revered him, but also feared him. As you can probably guess, what with him being a young, orphaned Silvester's master, he wasn't much for social conventions."

He looks sad, a chews a little on his words, like it is hard for him to say.

"Let's just say that one day he went against power, and fearing his might and popularity, he was crushed. It is good to be strong, young Yos, but bad to be too strong and too willful. If you shake the world, it will put you down. You are already developing at a terrifying rate, and we fear you will not learn what fights to pick before you are too strong to stop. As such, we thought it would be best if you didn't gain yet another boon to your growth as you have done."

That warning, it sounds ominous given my plans for the future, but I don't mind. I don't think I will be "shaking the world" by merely wanting to create some competitive sports.

"Sooo, can I take night watch?"

He looks at me a little and sighs "Fine, but you should know to preserve your strength in case anything happens" He says. "The rest of us still need to sleep, so we will go you and me first, then Bern will switch out with me." He heads over to Bern and Larn, where I see Larn doing a fist pump.

During the night, we keep watch, sleepiness still comes over me, but Kamas keeps me awake by chatting. I learn of Roxburg, an apparently magnificent city more than a hundred times the size of Brahms, and it's many wonders. Among these are what sounds to be an amphitheater, where Kamas' master fought. They capture monsters alive and use them to do exhibition shows, in addition to duels or what he calls small wars, which I guess are just team battles. I would like to go see it some day.

Suddenly, a read I cast gets a signal. "Six people in that direction" I say as I point. We camped on a hill to get a better view, but under the cover of darkness I can't even spot them just by looking, even though I know that they are there. Scratch that, I definitely saw something move. "Go wake the others, if we can show them that there are guards, they will turn around." I do as he say, waking and informing Bern, Larn and Atna. As I return I check with read again and they within 150 feet.

"Shouldn't we ambush them, so that they can't cause more trouble for the people here?" I whisper to Kamas.

"That is not the thinking of a hunter who grows old" Kamas responds. "Our responsibility ends with our job" In other words, better to be safe and let harm come to others than to risk fighting for altruistic reason. We all take simple positions, with Larn in the back, Bern behind me and Atna behind Kamas. I use Read again. "Still 150 feet away" I inform Kamas.

"We know you are there! Leave or die!" Kamas says in, while not a loud, an audible and threatening voice, but no response is heard. I use my Read again. "500 feet away". We relax and wait a little longer. My read now picks up no signals not close to me. "Beyond my range" I say, as we all fully lower our weapons.

"Well, I am going to get some sleep and let Bern take over" Kamas says. Soon he, Atna and Larn go back to sleep.

It annoys me something fierce that we didn't take a more radical approach, but I have learnt by now, that you don't talk back to your elders. I am looking forward to growing up.
