《Bathilda the Bat》Dejected Triumph
Advertisement
Both happy and sad in equal amounts, Bathilda is sitting in her lair in dejected triumph.
She is constantly examining her new body as she smiles then frowns one after the other in a continuous circle of resignation.
"Why can't I just get what I want for once?" her childish voice asks rhetorically.
I thought this was what you wanted? Responding with a question of his own, Hiro's words only infuriate Bathilda more.
"Are you joking? Look at me, Hiro!" she shouts whilst standing up.
Standing at almost 3 feet tall, Bathilda's childish face pouts in disdain at her most recent chain of events as she looks down at her new body once again. It reminds her of an anemic child that they had once cared for in the hospital where she worked when she was still human. Frail and malnourished, the young-girls body is the only thing Bathilda can compare herself to.
With barely any muscle or fat on her, Bathilda releases a tear at the sorry sight of herself. At the same time, golden hair slips over her shoulder and she smiles as it brings her attention away from her body.
"At least I've got silky-smooth hair. When I read 'Lesser Vampire' in the upgrade section I was honestly expecting more than... this." Bathilda words trail off.
As a vampire, she plays the gloomy foreboding character rather well. Even if she doesn't realise it herself.
It could be worse though. You could be a Brat. Remember that. Hiro adds, trying to help Bathilda climb out of her pit of misery.
"I suppose you're right. It could be worse. At least this is a step in the right direction. Even if I am a little girl again."
Bathilda once more looks human and can pass herself off as a regular person. Finally in a body that isn't covered in hair and teeth, Bathilda should be overjoyed and ecstatic, yet sorrow has its clutches deep in her heart as she thinks of the next problem on her list.

"Why did I have to come back down here? I should have evolved in the Slime's room!" she complains.
With her new childlike-body, escaping the pit seems like no easy feat. Especially since there are no wings on her back anymore.
There's nothing you can do about it now though. Looks like you're going to have to climb out of here.
"Why does everything have to be so awkward?" Slumping down once again, Bathilda pulls her knees in close before wrapping her arms around them and cradling herself whilst she thinks and curses her current situation. She wasn't to know that her wings would disappear with her most recent evolution.
Luckily, wings aren't Bathilda's only option for getting out of her home.
As she thinks of the word 'Clone', a second body appears before her. This gives Bathilda a chance to get a better look at herself.
Her eyes are the colour of flames and baby-bloodsucking fangs can be seen inside Hiro's mouth after she asks if she can inspect it.
"I don't like this, Bathilda. It's not right. I was a guy in my last life you know so switching gender like this is really throwing me off," Hiro complains in a high-pitch voice.
"You didn't complain when you had control of the bat," she argues.
"Yes... Well... That was because I didn't see it as a female bat!"
"Well, you were and someone's got to test out this body. If I die whilst trying it out, then so do you. Whereas if you die, your spirit will return to me and we can try again. It makes sense for you to be the guinea pig, Leech," Bathilda smiles evilly.
"Don't call me that please. It's demeaning," he frowns.
"I'm sorry, Hiro. I'm just a little vexed out right now. I don't wanna have to climb up this pit but I know the damn exit is up there!" Grumbling, Bathilda checks her status.

Bathilda laughs inwardly before sighing once again at her current predicament.
"Well, I suppose there's no time like the present. Go, Hiro! You can do it!" she shouts, full of confidence.
"I'm literally right next to you and I'm not a dog, you know? What are you even expecting me to do? " He replies in the same high-pitched voice as before, unnerving Bathilda slightly as he lives to the exit.
"You need to climb the pit. Just like you said," giving Hiro a thumbs up, Bathilda smiles her brightest smile to Hiro's shocked face.
"OK, but just so we're clear. I'm not happy with always being the scapegoat, or the tester, or the bait, you know!?" Hiro voices his complaints as he begins to scale the wall.
To his continued shock, it's actually a lot easier than he anticipated after hearing Bathilda's ridiculous idea. Having small hands and feet make it easier to climb as they fit into the nooks and crevices of the pit's wall better than an adults would.
"To be honest Bathilda, this is actually quite easy! You may as well set off now because I doubt you'll lose grip whilst climbing up he..." Speaking too soon, Hiro loses his footing whilst reaching for the next hand hole and he ends up plummeting downward.
Hiro's fall actually goes slower than he would expect, shocking him even more than Bathilda's carefree statement and how easy the wall was to climb, even though he lost his grip.
Unable to alter his slow-moving course, it gives him time to lock eyes with a satisfied-looking Bathilda as he passes by on his way to the bottom of the pit. With each millisecond that passes by the only words that come to Hiro's mind are, 'Why did I open my mouth?' before he eventually crashes into the floor.
Shock is now running through Hiro on an unprecedented scale. Through some type of miraculous circumstances or divine intervention, Hiro isn't dead and he lifts himself up from off the floor in a dazed manner. In fact, he's a far way from death as he's hardly even injured from the dangerous fall.
After quickly checking his stats, Hiro finds that he's only lost 10HP from the 150 foot drop he has just involuntarily undertaken.
"Well, shit!" He smiles in satisfaction at his resilient yet petite body before wondering how strong Bathilda's main body is.
"Hiro?" Bathilda shouts down from above, "You don't need to worry about climbing now either. I've realised that we can still fly without wings! How cool is that?"
"Of course we can," Hiro sighs as he wonders why he had to try and climb the pit in the first place. "Why didn't we try that in the beginning then!"

I have been absolutely delighted to see such a positive response to this (On Scribble Hub) and have decided to continue Talo's story. I have several ideas about this and will be twining her story into the novels as I figure it out. I am very much a Pantser so I have no idea how this will play out. I hope you enjoy the ride as we explore these concepts.
