After finishing his chores with nothing exciting happening he heads over to the mine to check on Kib. The walk is a tough less than an hour now that he knows the best route, and has grown far more athletic. The increase in his muscle definition, speed, and combat skill in the last month has been surprising.
It must have been because Bandlor activated his heroic aura. El can’t recall feeling any substantial progress before that. Well, there was the dream he had on the first night of the month. Couldn’t have been anything more than a fey mood.

Top’s Plan
After Kib is finished working El helps prepare some food for him. Top sticks around as the other laborers disappear and proposes a plan to El and Kib for him to do a five-day route between here and Crestfall.
“It would be a synch.” Top explains. “For supplies and a wagon, I would only need ninety gold. Then I could get the mine’s extra resources together and El could go on my first trip. We would go to Crestfall, the nearest city that was larger, and sell for profit. There were other halflings who could take my spot on the mining team and I could generate sixty silver every five days in profit for us.”

“That’s unreasonable.” Kib crosses his small and scaled arms.
“No, it’ll be good to establish trade. I’ll pay for it, we leave on the first of next month. No delays.” El looks to Top for confirmation.
“You can count on me.” The halfling nods eagerly.
“Fine, I’m paying twenty of it.” Kib gets up to fetch his gold.
“Thanks, buddy!” El calls out before returning to Top. “My money is stashed in the barn. You’ll get some on the trip back home.”
“Then you’ve got a driver.” Top and El shake on it.
El and Kib do a bit of hunting before El goes back to the village. The two face-down some wolves and keep tabs on some goblin tracks.

El heads back to the village, he checks into the barn to grab his gold and heads to the tavern to find Top. The halfling is at the bar halfway through a pint when El sits beside him.
“Agh!” The halfling says, spitting some as he slams his drink down. “The town's very own hero is here!”
“Hero?” Erin passes by. “If you’re a hero are you finally going to have a drink with me?” Erin leans against the bar angled towards El.
“Arkin wouldn’t approve.” El shrugs. “And I’ve brought more trouble to town than good.”
“Well, that's just not true.” Erin scoffs.
“So that's why you had to save my ass from the guards?” El folds his arms and sinks into himself.
“Didn’t you get away from them? They haven’t been a problem for the town since.” Erin comments.
John stops and thinks over her wording.
“They left town?” El looks between her and Top.

“Yeah,” They both answer.
“Why do you think you’re still alive?” Top smirks.
“Luck.” El readjusts himself in his seat. He normally never lies.
“Well, what brings you in today then?” Erin asks.
“Oh, I got this for Top.” El drops the bag of seventy gold coins in front of Top.
“Are you kidding me?” Top hisses. “Here?” He grabs the bag and retreats from the bar. “Thank you!” He calls out as he runs out the tavern door.
“How much was that?” Erin’s confusion catches El’s attention as he turns back to her.
“Seventy,” El answers quicker than he can decide if answering is a good idea or not.
“How do you make that kind of money?” Her mouth stays slightly apart and she leans in to listen to El. “Are you secretly a gigolo?”
“What! No.” El leans back as his face grows red hot.
“What, it's an honest profession, considered dabbling myself if times ever get too hard.” Erin smiles wickedly.
“Well then.” El brushes the comment aside. “Cheap rent with amenities included, competitive wages, and intense savings.”
“Oh, that’s all? Are you sure you aren’t just lucky?” Erin teases.
“Maybe I am.” El shrugs.”I have to get some sleep though. I’ll see you again later.” El stands and leaves the bar.
“Damn it,” Erin mutters.
El walks through the village back to his barn, climbs up into his loft space, and drifts off to sleep in his comfy bed.

Gateway
An archaeologist by the name of Søren Quinn wakes up elsewhere after boarding a plane for Iceland. Now he has to come to terms with a significant loss of recent memory and his apparent death and rebirth, provided he can survive the rigors of the Tutorial on Gateway Station and whatever waits for him after the Tutorial. Updates. When I can... sorry. Author's Note. Gateway is a portal/isekai style GameLit novel, but it has two main lead characters and will eventually have a small cast of minor lead characters to support them. There will be small elements of base building / kingdom management added as well over time, but they will not be the focus. Gateway really is a slow burn that takes some time to get going unfortunately, but I hope you find it's worth the wait. Thank you! p.s. Book One is finally done (only needed one more chapter unfortunately...) but I'm off hiatus now and will be starting on Book Two right away!
