《So What If The World Is About To End? I Have Side Quests To Finish!》Chapter 2: Class Testing

Miles woke up from a dreamless sleep. He had more or less blinked the night away, but that was normal for him. Thus, it was with little regard for his awakened abilities that he got up from the cold hard floor and began his morning routine to start his day.
Leaving the basement, the only other space Miles was allowed access to in the house was the ground-floor bathroom. Though, even there, he didn't even have the most basic toiletries of a toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, or even a towel. He had to make do with simply cleaning his mouth and face with frigid ice-cold water.
Still, Miles didn't complain. He had grown used to his lifestyle and knew it could have been way, way…. Worse.
…
Now en route to the Frontier Guild, a sudden curiosity inspired by the boredom of being more than ten minutes away from his destination led Miles to tinker with his System.
Miles thought, 'This thing mentioned a 'Shop,' righ—'
[Shop:
-System Improvements
-Materials
-Artifacts
-Medicines
-Skills
-Information]
Carelessly, Miles wondered if he could estimate the value of a System Point in terms of real world money, so he looked to see if he could recognize something from the Materials catalogue of the System Shop.
[Shop (Materials):
…
Cavaliere Carrots x10 kilograms | 25 System Points
…
Doucette Kernels x1 kilogram | 15 System Points
…]
"Ugh..." Miles groaned as he nursed the headache he had developed from having shifted through that abysmal alphabetically organized list of materials. He'd only found two "materials" he recognized, and they seemed to suggest System Points did not exactly correlate to a set amount of real world money, but he knew he'd need to look for other points of comparisons to be sure.
He'd do that—

Shop Optimization | 1,000 System Points
…]
—Only after he bought that one System Improvement, though; probably...
For now, however, he'd focus on trying to make money. Now that he was recognized as an adult with a Class of his own, he wasn't stopped at the Guild's entrance. Alas, before he could look through the Job Board for some work, Miles needed to register himself as a member.
"Uh, hello," He awkwardly said, trying to get the attention of the sole working receptionist at the moment. Once the man behind the counter looked up from his CrysTel, Miles continued to say, "I would like to register, please..."
"Hmm? Must be another one of those brats that went through the ritual yesterday," the man sighed as he sat up and started procuring documents begrudgingly. A minute later, he handed them over to Miles with a pen and said, "Don't bother me again until you've completely filled those out."
As Miles nodded and moved to fill the details out elsewhere, the receptionist added, "Though, you might want to be quick about it. If you're too slow, all the testing spots and accommodation for new members will run out."
[New Quest Alert]
[Side Quest 2: Early Bird.
Description: It's the day after the Class Awakening Ritual and hundreds if not thousands of "new adults" want to get registered with Guilds to begin their careers. You better get your ass into high gear and fill out your registration forms quickly or you won't even be able to work until tomorrow!
Rewards: Provides a greater selection of Skills you may be able to learn through your accommodations the faster the Quest is completed.
DEADLINE: 10 Minutes]
Motivated and now slightly anxious, Miles speed-walked his way to the nearest open table at the Guild's cafeteria and began to scribble information down as fast as he could; provided it was accurate.

Seven minutes later, upon handing over his completely filled out forms back to the grumpy receptionist…
[Quest Completion Alert]
[Side Quest 2: Early Bird (Complete)]
The receptionist gave Miles instructions on where to go to complete his round of Class Testing. Luckily, he didn't have to loiter around for long before the time came for his group, the last group of the day, was called to be tested on the Guild's private courtyard.
Mile's time with the group was... disheartening to say the least.
For all intents and purposes, he was a Primary Cultivator — and adaptable, non-specialized, non-unique kind of Class — in a sea of impressive juggernauts born and bred for battle. It was hard to not feel embarrassed as most Cultivators upon awakening possessed no unique benefits or Skills.
Where just yesterday, he and everyone present were equals for the most part, today, he was still a normal person and they were capable of superhuman feats.
Crunch! Inheritors of the Warrior and Soldier Classes demonstrated their innate strength by easily breaking through wood, horribly disfiguring plates of metal, and cratering holes into the ground.
Whoosh! Boom! Mages had the horrifying ability to summon constructs of nature — massive balls of fire, spears materialized from the ground, and sometimes even literal lightning — to decimate dummy targets at a distance.
Boom! Bo-bo-boom! A girl with a bow who had previously nocked four arrows, fired them all at once and they somehow obliterated her target dummies, earning her the fear of her peers and respect from the supervising Guild attendants conducting the Class Testing.
Miles didn't even have the power to simply throw an explosive close enough to the ranged targets to achieve the same feat. With regards to combat, he was frankly pathetic. He also had no talent, else a Skill would have manifested.
Unable to fight up close or at a distance… By the time the group moved on to test other aspects of value to the Frontier Guild, Miles had earned the scorn and disgust of most of his peers.
Seeing as Miles had no intention of giving up and moving, perhaps testing his potential with a different Guild, the hateful Frontier Guild initiates were almost rightfully justified in being so against Miles.
After all, out in the real world, beyond the safety of the town walls, was the domain of the Frontier Guild. There, where missions pit one against the unknown dangers lurking around every corner, there was nothing worse than being in a group with a person incapable of helping out in a fight.
Then, as the Class Testing was about to finish with Miles proving to be average if not sub par in all things related to fighting — unarmed and armed combat, defensive combat, magical combat — he found his talent.

Ravyn's Nights - Book 2
Claire's life led her to love. Love led her to death. Death began her eternal struggle to retain both her love and her humanity through 5 centuries of endless nights. Book 2 covers the 18th century. "Ravyn's Nights" is a six book series, with each book covering a different century. Book 6 was actually started first, and it takes place in the near future, bringing the story to a final conclusion. I then started writing the rest of the series when I decided that I wanted to share the details of the life that made her into who she is in Book 6. At the time of posting the first chapter of the series, books 1-2-3 are completed and books four, five and six are in various states of completion. There is currently a novella following a side character that does include a few crossover chapters featuring the main character. The novella will be included in the completed versions of books 4 and 5.
