《Throwing Dice》Ch. 1B - Maxim (2)

I'm tired. But if I slept right now, I would be even more tired once I woke up. I'm hungry, too, but not enough to get out of bed for food. So I'll just stay lying here, in silence.
It's finally Friday. I have always been the type to look forward to the weekend more than anything else. That's what Inga and Levi always say. I vaguely remember going outside with my mom and my sibling during the weekend to play in the snow, years ago. We used to call those days Snow Saturdays. When it got too cold to play outside, I ran to the living room, and Papa would let me watch him play the piano closely. I sat on his lap and wondered how his indelicate hands could play so elegantly. Sometimes, he would improvise…
What do you want to hear, Maxim? he would ask me.
B Minor! I replied. And Papa made up something just for me. There were times I liked what he was playing so much that he wrote it down for the future.
Saturdays were the days when Mama wasn't at the lab and Papa wasn't at the State Music Hall. Valya gave themself more free time, too, and offered me more attention. They're eight years older, but still spent so much time with me… We would also watch movies together, and since they let me choose, it was always the same two animations, repeated every single weekend.
I think some children are naïvely happy, but I was not. I know it was genuine, almost out of a children's book. And that happiness was the reason I looked forward to the weekend so much, back then. But only back then.
What today I reminisce so sadly will sound like distant fiction in the future. One day, I'll completely forget it, I'm sure. I won't even be able to tell whether or not I miss it. There are no longer Snow Saturdays, and this apartment doesn't have a piano, let alone a pianist. I no longer have parents, and Valya… It's like they're gone. Today, I want Saturdays to come soon because it is ok if I don't get any sleep. Because there are times… When simply closing my eyes is enough to bring back something I don't want to see.

Small Chests Are Fine Too
It is an undeniable fact that good things come in small packages. More often than not, it is necessary to trim the fat in order to bring what really matters to the forefront. Having extra bulk may seem like a good idea, but in reality it is merely a crutch that will one day become a hindrance, as it is no substitute for personality nor ability. Indeed, often times it is the small things in life that brighten up our daily lives and constantly remind us exactly why we do the things we do. However, it is important to keep an open mind, for while bigger is not always better, there are also times when it is. This holds especially true when it comes to hopes and dreams, which have been known to require a suitably large container from time to time. And while dreaming big could potentially lead to massive dissapointment, one will never truly reach fulfilment if they think too small. A truth that one small woman with meager aspirations is about to find out. DISCLAIMER: This is a spin-off/side story of my main series, Everybody Loves Large Chests, which is also mandatory reading to understand this one. It runs parallel to the main plot, branching off from the chapter titled Upheaval 2, so there will be spoilers for anyone who hasn't reached that point.

Monster Apocalypse
When the news started reporting strange changes of mankind, though the information was obviously controlled, it was enough to create commotion around the world. At first, it was only the subtle change of hair color, though it was strange, everyone accepted such a small change, some embraced it, some dyed their hair into normal colors. Afterwards, videos of people doing impossible feats surfaced onto the media, men lifting cars, women crushing walls, children jumping up to the second story of buildings easily. Then, humans started growing beast like appendages and features, horns and tails sprouted, though abnormally small, it was growing, regardless of the age or gender of the affected human. Despite the countless funds supplied into researching why, or how, did these features come to be, it proved to be fruitless. As those features grew, it became more defined, wings capable of carrying humans into the skies appeared, tails controlled by humans emotions sprouted to a certain length, and stopped growing. And on the last day, known as the beginning of the Monster Apocalypse, mankind grew wild.
