《Legacy of the Ancient》Chapter 22 - The Power of Willbender

“Yeah, uncle! This is the Staff of Mgre!” Calbot’s face brimmed with astonishment.

The crystal’s light radius was getting smaller, from across the room to about twice the size of the crystal, then it stayed in that size.

King Termura couldn't say anything. He was just too shocked seeing the legend was real, and thinking his throne would be taken away from him. To the rightful owner.

Calbot felt the staff was lighter after the light burst.

“(The book said, I can do voice command.)” thought Calbot.

“Alright! Ahem!” he cleared his throat.

“Uncle, sit!” he said.

King Termura sat his body down on the throne. No struggle was seen in his movement.

“Wha-what!?” King Termura’s face became grim.

“Oops! Uncle you can’t say a word until I allow it.” said Calbot.

“!!?” only Termura’s expression said it all. Anger, rage and fear.

“I can't believe it worked!” said Calbot after he tasted the power of Willbender.

“Uwoooo!!!” The Sun Knight Order cheered Calbot. It was a victory cry.

Nobles around Termura were confused. Even some of them already ran with tail between their legs.

Farferis Knights were also confused to what just happened.

“Now… uncle, order your troops to stop.” said Calbot.

“Ugh!” King Termura gritted his teeth, trying to resist the Willbender. But, he just couldn't.

Then, King Termura ordered the knights to cease all the fighting.

“Good grief, he made it.” Cain saw all of that. Of course that was the work of Calbot, or rather, the Staff of Mgre.

But when he looked at Bartega’s direction, he was no longer there. Only the remains of Jirjax were scattered on the ground.

“Oh, well…” he shrugged. Cain thought it was no use to go for him, so he sat this one down.

“Tch!” Kaurev clenched his fist.

“We won, Kaurev. Stand down.” said Jared.

Holding back his anger and disappointment, Kaurev walked away leaving Jared. Jared said nothing as Kaurev vanished into the knights crowd.

“King Calbot! King Calbot!” The Sun Knight Order cheered the Prince soon to be King.

After that, King Termura ordered to gather the people of Haneama. He announced that he would step down from the throne, and Farferis Kingdom would become a slave-free Kingdom like its neighbor, Arozora.

While doing so, he revealed to the public that he had conspirations with the nobles to side with him so the Prince would not succeed the throne in the past. This made some of the nobles fled out from Farferis. They were afraid of the consequences, but some stayed, resigning to receive the new ruler’s judgement.

With this, the people of Farferis would get a new King, their true King. Their lives weren't bad nor good under King Termura’s rule. They wished with Prince Calbot’s rule, they would a have better life. Although some of the people would riot because they refused the idea of slave eradication, it would indeed sharply decrease the income of the Kingdom, as their main income was from the slave trade. But Calbot had already planned ahead, he would get help and support from the neighboring Kingdoms to help him rebuild Farferis. Especially from the slave-free Kingdoms.

That day, Calbot almost executed his own uncle, Meira stopped him, and asked to forgive his uncle. She did not want Calbot to repeat the tradition of Hanea royal family, blood for the throne. She wanted him to be a better King.

Calbot granted Meira’s request, in return, Termura and his family lost their status as noble of Farferis and would live among the commoners. Also, 80% of his wealth was confiscated by the Kingdom.

The night after they retook the throne, they celebrated their victory in the Palace, in the guest wing to be exact, that place wasn't touched by today's event. So no rubbles, no burned marks, no crumbled walls in there.

They also invited anyone. Knights, nobles or commoners were welcomed.

There, Calbot socialized his plans for slave eradication to the guests.

While Calbot was occupied by some of the guests, Cain and the Sun Knight Order were enjoying the party.

“And then! He summoned a giant Spirit Beast that looked like a snake! Four times bigger than Kiri’s Yellowback Great Bear!”

“Indeed!” said Kiri, the Sun Knight that summoned the Yellowback Great Bear back in Hanearian’s Rest.

“Oooh!!!”

Some of the Sun Knights were telling the guests that they got help from a certain person, they were talking about Cain.

“Look at that, you’re famous already! Hahah!” said Jared while eating some snacks. He sat with Cain across the storyteller.

“Am I? I’m not really enjoying the attention though.” Cain sipped his drink, red tea. His right rand was bandaged, covered his wounds

“Hah! At least you have to enjoy this moment! This is the proudest day of Sun Knight Order!” said Jared

“Cain!” Rinrai and Marna approached them.

“Oh hi! You guys are okay?” asked Cain.

“Yeah, though some of the Order didn't make it.” Rinrai lowered his head.

Sun Knight Order had some casualties, it wasn't high, just a few. This was actually lower than they expected, if Cain weren’t here, they probably would have been butchered by the Old Beast.

“Quit the gloomy face, Rinrai! We feast tonight also for our fallen brethren!” Jared stood up with a mug of mead on his hand.

“Sun Knight Order!, Let us toast for our fallen brethren! May their soul embraced by the Goddess!” said Jared.

He raised his drink, and drank it all in one gulp. Sun Knight Order also toasted their drinks.

Cain slipped away after they started dancing again like in the camp.

“(They’re really hard at battle, but they partied harder!)” Cain shrugged.

Cain walked around looking for a cheap inn. Like in the Aroum City, Haneama City at night was also restless. And the city was actually calm after what happened. Thanks to Sun Knight Order, they kept the collateral damage at minimum when they fought to the Palace.

Cain rented a room for two nights at an inn. After a bath, he consumed three Hineru stems.

“What will I do tomorrow?” he was munching the stems.

“Hmm… maybe say my goodbye to them then depart for Krevias? I don't have to do quest from Hunter Guild for money anyway…”

He had the diamonds he picked from Mysticbone Hall after all.

“Oh well, I’ll just see tomorrow.” Cain hit the bed after a glass of water.

In the morning, Haneama Palace was busy. Because Calbot had a lot of homework.

Calbot started to order the remaining Markers to release their slaves, and gave them compensation for it. Also applied for the people who had slaves.

About 40% of Farferis people owned slaves, thus he would do this slave eradication step by step. He already asked his neighbor Kingdoms for support. Fortunately, most of the slave owners were the nobles, the nobles that sided with Termura. So, Calbot gave them two options, to be banished, or released their slaves for free.

Also, Calbot gave the newly freed slaves jobs, in the Palace or at the public facilities. He let Meira handled it, because he knew Meira knew them best. Surprisingly, many of the people also took care of them, hired them to become paid worker instead.

Jared also recruited most of the combat slaves to fill in Farferis Knights ranks, they were treated well this time.

As for the Farferis Knights, few of them were dishonorably discharged and banished from Farferis. And a lot of them were sent to other cities and remote villages. The rest were pardoned after they proved they were not Termura’s supporter.

The wealth of the nobles that did not fled was confiscated in half by the Kingdom. They also had to pay taxes with twice of the normal amount for 10 years. Calbot took a different approach for his uncle’s former supporter. He did not want to just blindly execute them, if he could still use them for the good of his Kingdom, why not he said.

Cain went to the Palace. Some guards stood in front of the half repaired gate. They immediately opened the gate when they saw him. The guards had been notified about him. He could enter the Palace as he please.

On his way to the Throne Room, the damage caused by yesterday's fight was being repaired.

“Ah, Cain. You want to meet Prince Calbot? King Calbot, I mean.” some of the Sun Knights greeted him.

“Yeah, is he busy?”

“No, he is waiting for you to come in fact. He is near the throne.”

“Oh? Alright! See ya!”

The knights slightly bowed.

In the Throne Room, he saw the aftermath of the fight done to the environment. Especially his fight. It was quite messy.

“Caaiiiiin!” Calbot waved from across the room, accompanied by Meira and Jared.

“Yo! How’s Farferis?” said Cain casually while approaching them.

“We just retook it yesterday, of course it hasn’t stable yet.” said Calbot.

“Sorry if I made your Throne Room quite messy.” Cain smirked.

“Yeah, you totally went all out, eh? You are really strong,” responded Calbot. “You know, we could use people like you in Farferis.” Calbot winked to Cain.

“I bet Jared is enough for this Kingdom, right jared?” said Cain. He looked to Jared.

“Actually, King Calbot is right, Farferis needs someone like you. General position is empty now, we don't know Kaurev’s whereabout.” Jared crossed his arm on his chest.

“That’s true.” Meira nodded in agreement.

“See, Cain? And I’m not the King yet, Jared.” said Calbot.

“Hahah, no. I don't like being tied to a certain Kingdom.” Cain scratched his head.

“I see. Well, you are a Hunter after all, they’re bound to be free.” Calbot sighed.

“Oh yeah, Cain, I promised you rewards, right? Well, actually I can’t use the money from the treasury because I’m officially not the King of Farferis yet. And also we must compensate the Markers and some of the slave owners, that’s the priority.” Calbot continued.

Farferis was actually quite resourceful, it had good routes for traders, and quite safe for them. Weirdly, they never expanded their military power with such resource. Instead, they allocated them into economy prospect and the Kingdom's stability.

“Oh, actually, I plan to not receive this reward. I took a good amount of diamonds at Hanearian’s rest.” said Cain. He’s not really bothered by it because he had his own pocket.

Calbot, Jared and Meira looked at each other.

“You’re a Gravel rank Hunter, aren't you?” Jared frowned.

“What? What is Gravel rank? I don't think there’s a rank called by that.” Cain replied.

“...”

“Yep, he totally is.” said Calbot.

Meira also nodded in agreement.

They looked at Cain with a weird and ‘i see’ look.

“What? Why are you guys looking at me like that??” said Cain.

Jared sighed. “Gravel or Grass rank is the three lowest ranks of Hunters.” he said.

“Ahh! I see,” Cain recalled what Fay, the guild administrator said when he registered. “What’s the next rank?” asked Cain.

“River rank is the second, and Cloud rank is the third. But the highest rank, Diamond, isn't included in the Cloud rank, it’s just Diamond rank.” explained Jared.

“Hmm… I see. Indeed I’m an Aquamarine rank Hunter.” said Cain.

“I thought you would be at least a Spinel, River rank, Cain.” said Calbot.

“I just became a Hunter maybe one or two weeks ago.”

“That explained it.” said Meira.

“How do you know this, Jared? You’re not a Hunter.” asked Cain.

“Some of the Sun Knights are ex Hunter, so I know a bit about them.”

“I see,” Cain nodded. “Oh, back to the reward, it’s cool if I refuse it, right?” Cain asked Calbot.

“Are you sure? I mean, the very purpose of joining the Hunter guild is for money, right? I never saw a Hunter who refused a reward, even a tiny rewards like the rewards that could only buy them one meal.” Calbot crossed his arms.

“It… was. Not anymore. Besides, you weren’t hired me, you asked me, for help, right?” Cain smiled.

“... Was? But-”

“Well, I’m sure he has reasons,” Meira cut Calbot’s words. “But we shouldn't pry, right Cain?” said Meira. She smiled to Cain then looked to Calbot and Jared.

Cain smiled her back.

“Alright,” Calbot sighed. “But! At least stay in Haneama until the Coronation Day. I won't take no for that.” he said.

“Coronation Day?” asked Cain.

“There will be a Coronation Day, where I will officially take the throne, two weeks from now. Also, the neighboring Kingdoms will be invited. There is so much to be done.” grumbled Calbot.

“I see… two weeks, eh? Well, I’m not in a hurry, so that's fine.”

“Great! Also, I thank you for everything you’ve done for us.” said Calbot.

“But I just helped out a little.” responded Cain.

“You’re too modest, Cain. If it were not for you, I’d be a slave forever.” Meira smiled.

“True, actually, when the Old Beast appeared, I’ve lost hope. There’s no way we could win,” Jared had a bitter smile on his face. “But you proved me wrong. You even killed Ulsarzath.” said Jared.

“See? You’ve done a lot for us. We thank you for it.” Calbot smiled.

“... No problem,” Cain also smiled. “By the way, where is the Old Beast?”

“My scouts reported that they see someone resembling the Old Beast was heading west,” Jared replied. “This is the first time I see him ran away from a battle, you smacked him hard, huh?” he continued.

They all laughed.

“I see, will he be a threat?” another question by Cain.

“Doubt it. Now, Termura is too poor to pay him. He doesn’t work for free. So the contract is no more.” said Jared.

“Great.” responded Cain.

They also talked about the Staff of Mgre. Callbot planned to destroy it. Cain did not ask the reason, it was no longer his business.

After their talks, Calbot offered Cain to stay at Haneama Palace for his two weeks stay, meals included. Which accepted by Cain gratefully. With this, he didn't have to worry about lodging and meals expense.
