《An 'Ordinary' Adventure》Chapter 1 - Imprisoned - Part 12

As Knight walked through the silent tunnels, long gone from the clanging of pickaxes and the jovial humming of the chained speaker, dotted lights appeared in his vision. Yet, they only adorned the path ahead, not the offshoot to the left. The last offshoot before the exit.
Knight was cautious. If it was right near the exit, then anything could be down there. However, before he could even debate whether to shine his light, a rough, hoarse noise entered his ears.
Knight bolted down the tunnel. He wanted nothing to do with that was there. He doubted they slept but it must have been a guard.
However, it was only a few seconds before his bad luck in this new world would come to an end. There was a bright, warm glow emitting from the end of the tunnel roof. It was accompanied by a ladder.
Knight couldn’t hold his excitement as he dashed toward the ladder. Looking up, a hand on the ladder ready to climb, Knight could see an arched stone roof lit by the sconces on the wall.
His sudden enthusiasm died down, realising that it may just be the way to another section of this prison. Though at this point, he had to take every chance he could get.
Before Knight could begin climbing, booming footsteps echoed through the tunnel. It was like slabs smacking concrete repeatedly.
Knight couldn’t help but glancing back to see what it was, despite it being obvious from the snore before.
It was a cloaked giant and it was rapidly approaching.
His heart now racing, Knight threw his foot onto the ladder whilst swinging the other one up simultaneously. His foot slipped, shifting his body weight backwards. With only one arm to support him, he fell to the ground instantly. “Shit!”

He heard a cackle, and then with a flash of pain was on his back, dazed.
Knight was given no time to wonder why it was draped in a cloak as a cold hand gripped his face. The creature wasn’t messing about.
Time passed ever so slowly, as the giant carelessly lifted him off the ground. The crushing pain was stifled by the sheer fear Knight felt. The creature wasn’t like the others. Insanity was oozing from under its hood.
The sight of Knight squirming to free its grip seemed to amuse the creature, as it let out a snort followed by hysterical cackling.
However, Knight’s fear was replaced with an intense feeling of disgust as the creature unfastened the clasp at its throat, the cloak slithering over its scaly hide and off its body. Knight noticed how the crimson scales became human flesh at the shoulder. But what the thing that disgusted him was its head. It was like thousands of ocelli squashed together on top of the scaly neck. It was completely different from the other creatures Knight had become so familiar with.
Just as this abomination entered Knight’s gaze, blueish rays shone from the thing’s scales. Before Knight knew it, he was unconscious again.

NOVA INTERIT.US
It's 2063, and the town along with much of the nation are in disarray. The decay started years before the Great Event. Our town still had hope thanks to the five families, who'd created a blockchain based water distribution system for the locals, a valuable secret hidden from the Global Water Commission and their network of mercenaries. Earlier in the mid-2040's, right after the state secessions of Idaho, Montana, and Texas, the Global Council of Water Commissioners made their deals and moved into towns throughout the country. They called it "the integration." The Commission and their contractors integrated with municipal water departments, using their organized network to invade like parasites on local services. It all coincided with the 29th Amendment to the United States Constitution, later referred to as the Regional Trident Plan. Nova is a story about survival, power structures, the turning of relationships, and the networking between people and the systems to which they belong. It’s about A.I. blockchain possibility, and its potential for human betterment versus our detriment. It’s about the question of whether or not we need to be saved from ourselves, and by who or what? The Great Event at the end of the first chapter might just be what actually saves us. The epilogue will take place in 2517. This scene is fully sketched and the full arc of the novel is set. I expect to finish Nova Interitus by summer of 2023. This is realist hard-sci-fi dystopian fiction. I hope you find Nova to be a challenging and consuming story. This is not something I planned to write. It all came to me in a dream and I haven't been able to stop writing it. This Royal Road posting is basically a beta test with chapters and drafts to get some feedback and see if there's any readership for this narrative. For the full experience read Nova on Substack. I will be narrating a podcast version later this year there. https://novainteritus.substack.com/

Briars and Thorns
Millenia ago, humanity faced a catastrophe. Some devastating, catastrophic event that even to this day leaves its impact on humankind and the Earth. That’s not where our story takes place though, instead we look to space, where humans have taken up residence among the stars. Living in huge industrial space stations, life is a bore. Dull daily routines are broken only by extravagant fashion, music, and other means of self expression. Also, of course, the lifeblood of the stations- games. Four months ago, humanity was contacted by the first ever known alien life forms. These aliens, calling themselves the Erta offered their designs and schematics for their True Virtual Reality (TVR) console, as well as access to their game in exchange for peace. And humanity, excited at the opportunity to achieve one of their life long dreams (that is, to experience True VR), graciously took them up on their offer. Now, after scientists have finally confirmed the console to be safe for humans, the game is to finally be released to the public. This comes to the joy of most of the population, but a small portion of them can't help but be upset. As thousands of the researchers meant to be developing virtual reality, are fired overnight. Meet Brian Reed, one of these newly unemployed workers. Now, join Brian as he explores the very game that was the death of his job. And watch as he learns that the game is not quite what it seems.

You can join my Discord here. Keynes Kid is gifted with a photographic memory and being several months away from receiving Level 1, and a Talent, he finds himself in the center of attention of people who want to shape his Talent. If they can get him an intelligence related Talent, they will hit a jackpot. The Talent Unlocking ceremony finally comes and Keynes Kid receives… Error… Anomaly (What?) His new talent is… useless. Why then does the World Government want Keynes so badly they will silence anyone who knows about his Talent? At the same time... Somewhere in the Universe, ancient beings stir from their slumber, awoken by the system alert and the wall of glaring red warnings. Their greatest fear just manifested and they are hell-bent on erasing it from existence. -------- It is a slow-development story, so you won't find the MC with super powers at the beginning. -------- It is a coming of age story and focuses on a Talent system (in the beginning) with several additions that bring to the table upgrading of a planet’s tier and such (a bit later). There will be quite an amount of rebuilding society as new, unknown resources enter the economy, and a lot of travelling, delving and naturally, unlocking the secrets of the Universe. As for the setting, the story starts in XXI century, which technology-wise isn't much different from what we have now, but it is enhanced by magic associated with Talents. This allowed the humankind to colonize the solar system, but the technology that allows for interstellar travel doesn't exist (yet). Because it’s my first attempt at LitRPG, please be forgiving but constructive. I hope you will enjoy the story! --- Cover by Daniel Gembus https://www.artstation.com/daniel_gembus instagram.com/danielgembus
