The two figures stood at opposite sides of the pad Finn laid on, having dragged the padded ledge to the middle of the room and ignoring the fact that it had originally been attached to the stone wall. He, and the ledge, levitated in the missile of the room with a conflicted expression on his face. He was fighting something, and it looked to be a frustrating fight.

I was worried about him, but more than that I was battling the urge to stare at the fairy and the goblin that glared at each other.

It was easy to see that he was related to either of them and what parts of their visuals he had borrowed.

His great-grandfather didn’t look a day over twenty-five and had short silver hair that reflected on his horn, bright silver just like the one Finn had grown. The jaw, the thin but still full lips and the heavyset eyebrows were reflected in his great-grandson’s face.

Finn’s grandmother made up for the rest of his features, with her long golden hair, bright golden eyes and overall beautiful features. If I’d seen her on the street I would have sworn she wasn’t a minute over the age of twenty-three. Her large and enticingly limpid eyes, the structure of her cheeks and her soft but still well-defined nose, they all made an appearance on Finley’s face.

They both held a hand over Finn, gold threads drilling into one side of his chest and bright silver threads filing into the other.

“Watch it, Heloise.”

His powerful voice, deep and threatening rumbled over to Heloise, who only returned a gentle smile as she retorted in an equally gentle voice, despite her irritating words.

“Its hardly my fault your goblin magic is so much weaker than mine Theodulus. Perhaps you should just back off and let my grandson become a full fairy.”

His lips tightened into a straight line and a single fang poked out of it, showing an unfairly charismatic expression even through his frustration.

“As much as I would love to take this outside and battle it out with you, that’s not what my Great-grandson would want. Stay in your lane Heloise.”

If anyone had told me even a month ago that I would be watching a custody battle between the emperor of the goblins and the queen of all fairy kind over my best friend I would have promptly checked them into the closest mental hospital and prayed for their eventual mental well being.

“Watch your tone with me Theodulus. I am still the queen of the Fairylands.”

“Only as soon as you mind your attitude, Heloise. I am similarly still the monarch of the goblins. I don’t take kindly to being spoken down to.”

Finn began to stir and the soft whimpering started again. Sweat beaded down his face and he bit his lower lip so hard that blood bubbled out of it and dripped down his chin.

The blood was more of a silver-gold than the rich gold of last time or the molten silver of earlier on.

“Hey! Yeah, um sorry to interrupt but will he be okay?”

I broke my silence for three first time in about three days and interrupted their bickering. While it looked like they knew what they were doing, I didn’t want anything to happen to my friend. I didn’t know how magic worked but I at least knew that any operation involving someone’s life should be done with one’s utmost attention.

The two snapped their heads sideways as they remembered I existed.

“Ah. You’re that human Aies likes to keep around.”

“A human? What has Cai been doing?”

Hearing Finn be referred too by all of the different names somewhat tripped me out, but it wasn’t anything I wasn’t planning to get used too.

I could feel my skin crawl under the intensity of both their gazes and my breath caught in my throat and was only released once they redirected their attention back to my unconscious friend.

“I’m prepared to make a momentary truce Theodulus. It looks like Cai has decided to try and accommodate both his fairy and goblin powers. It would be reckless for us to try and take either one of them away from him.”

Was that why he was unconscious right now?

I hadn’t been aware that was a choice he’d had to make. All through his training with Ion I’d been under the impression that he’d had to integrate both.

Finn’s grandfather nodded in agreement with his grandmother’s proposal.

While the two non-humans focused on healing Finn, I could only stand to the side and pray for him to get better.

I inched closer to him and placed and on his forehead, making space for the horn between my fingers.

“Come on Finn. Hurry up and wake up so we can get out of here.”
