《Evolution God》14: Devil Snake

["The Host has killed 11 Lord-ranked beings. Awarding with 1,100,000 XP."]
After a little while, Lucifer had already killed 11 individuals at the weak end of Lord rank. Seeing the huge amount of XP he'd gotten, he couldn't help but be happy. Although he wasn't that strong compared to some of the peak Lord ranks, he was still dominating the battlefield. Flying around and scouting out some of the stronger Lord ranks, Lucifer was pondering what the two sides were fighting about, and whether he should help the humans or beasts. But if he began helping one side, he would be restricted as to how much XP he would be able to get, and that wasn't something he would want. Ever since he was bullied back on Earth, he'd always wanted to be stronger to not be oppressed and looked down upon.
Suddenly while flying around, he spotted a massive snake-like creature. It was around 30 metres long while its scales were a pale-white colour. Small skull-like patterns covered the white scales on its body, making it look like it had small skulls integrated into its skin.

[Race: Devil Snake]
A snake which is known to be extremely tough to kill when in a battlefield, as it can regenerate infinitely as long as corpses are nearby. It is also extremely dangerous, as it can corrupt the opponent's mind while also releasing poisonous gasses from its body, that will keep the opponent from getting close to it.

'That's something I can't afford to get into a battle with! It's even double as strong as that Giant Troll I killed some time ago.' When Lucifer read of the stats of the snake, he couldn't help but take in a cold breath and fly further away from it as to not provoke it.

'I'll have to get stronger if I want to fight with that a win.' As Lucifer hurriedly flapped his wings to get away from the snake, a few kilometres away he spotted yet another one. it was much smaller, only about half the size of the other.
'I might be able to kill this one if it isn't too strong.'

When Lucifer saw it's stats, he couldn't help but break into an evil smile. There were two skills he was interested in getting. First, 'Corpse Regeneration'. If he ever ran out of MP to use the Constant Regeneration skill, he'd be able to heal with that skill if there were corpses nearby. Second, 'Corruption'. He could already guess what that skill would do, and it would help him immensely if he could get it since he'd be able to both attack the mind and the physical body of the opponent.
He flapped his wings, and flew toward the snake as fast as he could, with no regards as to what happened around him. He was too focused on the snake since it's skills were like heaven for him.
He landed with a loud thud, making the ground crack beneath him as he looked with a murderous glare at the snake that had now put its attention on him. It was only now that Lucifer spotted that its pupils weren't like other reptiles. They looked exactly like skulls, representing death.
- "I haven't seen you before. What are you doing here?" A hoarse and deep voice was released from the snake's mouth as it kept on staring intensely on Lucifer.
- "Just a little snack is all I need." As Lucifer replied with something unexpected, the snake instantly backed off as it's sixth sense was telling it that the red-scaled dragon in front of it was dangerous. The snake was rather confused as to why it felt danger because when it looked at Lucifer, it could only see a dragon that was much weaker than itself.

- "Expand!"
As to getting an answer to its confusion, Lucifer's body rapidly began to expand, while his strength surged immensely. Suddenly he'd grown to have a total of 17,000 TB, a total of 4,000 above the snake's peak condition.
- "Orcus Dragon Flame!"
Immediately after Lucifer expanded, he used his strongest skill to try and instantly kill the snake without too much of a hassle. But because the snake had known that he was dangerous, it had quickly gotten out of range of his flame and easily managed to evade the attack. Although it had backed off, it didn't seem to try and flee from Lucifer, as it had most likely already figured out that it couldn't run away from him.
Suddenly a green gas was emitted from the snake, while its skull-like pupils began changing colour into a reddish one. It stared directly into Lucifer's eyes as if to try and see through him.
Lucifer's mind became blurry and chaotic as they kept eye contact. As soon as he spotted the changes within his mind, he instantly looked the other way out of instinct that told him what skills the snake had used on him just now.
Feeling frustrated that it's skill 'Corruption' didn't work on Lucifer, the snake charged towards him as if it didn't care about its life. It kept on emitting a green gas out from its body, leaving a trail of green mist behind it. Because Lucifer wasn't prepared for it to charge towards him after the attack failed, he was caught off guard as the snake instantly bit him and injected some of its poison. As if it had already won, the snake began to curl around his neck and strangle him with a mocking smile on its face. Because it had injected the poison it believed that Lucifer would soon fall unconscious.
After a while of him being strangled, Lucifer got tired of waiting and wanted to trick the snake into letting down its guard. The poison from the snake didn't have much of an effect on Lucifer as he had the Constant Regeneration skill that would constantly heal what the poison would destroy. As Lucifer silently closed his eyes and landed on the ground with a loud thud, the snake let down its guard as it had a hungry look on its face.
- "Orcus Dragon Flame."
But before it could even think about eating Lucifer, it had already been engulfed in his dragon flame which reeked of the aura of death. The flames died out and it had a confused look on its face as it didn't understand why the flames hadn't done anything to it. The confusion was soon replaced with mockery and pride as it looked at Lucifer as if he was too dumb to understand that his attack had failed.
Suddenly it's countenance changed dramatically as it felt it's lifeforce decrease at a rapid pace. It replaced the mockery and pride with panic and fear of death as it quickly looked around to find some corpses it could use to heal. Absorbing the nearby corpses could barely regenerate the lifeforce it was losing.
- "Execution."
Before it could calm down, Lucifer used his skill 'Execution' to cleanly stab through its head with his tail, instantly killing it hanging it to bleed out.
- "Absorb."
["The Host has successfully killed and absorbed a Devil Snake. Awarding Host with 1,000,000 XP, the 'Unique Skill: Corruption', and 10% of the Devil Snake bloodline."]

But your prospects in this Malthusian world are limited. Johanna Milton and her friends have an answer: delve into Ancient ruins, avoid Changed beasts and mana pockets, and salvage Ancient materials, collectibles, and trinkets to sell. It pays well if you avoid the perils of the Ancient world. But when they find the skeleton of an Ancient, their lives take a strange turn. Suddenly, Talents straight out of fantasy novels become theirs. While they try to make sense of what happens, eyes turn to them, to the four who seem to break all rules. Or are they merely following them? Because, in the Beyond where he's spent 150 years waiting, one dead Ancient knows the truth. Douglas Moore has played those games often enough when he was alive to make sense of the System that rules the Changed world. He can no longer act on his own, but he has access to the Interface. And four people for which he can bring whatever it takes to face the world. Change is coming. The Changed Ones is a slow-burn litrpg fantasy trilogy (Ancient Bones, Ancient Books, Ancient Bonds) set on Earth, 150 years after the RPG Apocalypse... which mostly failed. It is an homage to the venerable ancient RPGs of the Golden Box era, the Baldur's Gates, and many others, offering adventure where You must gather your party before venturing forth. Keywords: LitRPG, realistic setting, low-leveling, post-post-apocalypse, fantasy earth, slow-burn, secondary POVs, female primary MC, team adventure, worldbuilding. Trigger warnings: casual swearing, adult innuendo (no explicit scenes whatsoever, though). Oh, and potentially a bit of politics. Bonus content: a Litrpg Easter Egg hunt. With lots of eggs across the book, some easy, some hard to find. Current score: 6/20 (20 eggs, 6 found) Publication schedule: on hold until September for book 2.
