《Hatred: The Journey of the Madman [Old]》Ch 45: Reaching New Heights

The next morning I bid farewell with Verrona, she went to apply at the Profound School of Martial Arts and Magic.
My original body went back to Furor to further develop the city.
Currently I was hugged to death by a devoted follower of mine.
"Master... Ahhh, finally you are back."
The tears of Neo stained my cloth.
I pushed him away gently and looked into his eyes.
"Hmm Neo, you have become stronger, you almost hugged me to death."
"I wouldn't dare, wouldn't dare. I was a bit too emotional. I'm sorry."
Neo smiled and wiped away his tears.
We were currently in my old base. Elise was also here she seemed rather timid.
"Elise what's the matter? Aren't you glad that I am back?"
Elise was startled and she blushed.
"M-master, It isn't like I am not glad that you are back."
"Yes, you should have seen her when you were away, she was really depressed."
"Neo, how could you."
Ah, this warms my heart. I was away for too long, they still hold me dear. I was neglecting them too much.
"Ah, master you are back, good good."
I suddenly heard a familiar voice from behind. I turned around and saw a tall guy in a black robe. He was holding a plain staff in his gloved hands.
His face was concealed.
"If this isn't Neurocranium. You look sick."
"Eh? Master, I can't get sick I am a skeleton."
"I mean you look bad ass. Really dark and mysterious. Damn, I kinda envy you, I also want to be undead."
Neurocarnium pulled back his hood. He scratched his head. Trying to look embarrassed.
"Well, there is nothing good about being undead, master."
"Whatever, now that you are all here I have some good news."
Neo raised a brow. Elise looked up without looking into my eyes.
Neurocranium, well I don't know what expression he was making.
I cleared my throat.
"We will be going to school, all together."
Neo's eyes widened.
"Hahaha, finally. I have waited so long for this..." Neo nodded to himself with his right hand on his chin.
Elise on the other hand looked troubled.
"What's the matter Elise? Aren't you happy?"
Elise's eyes moistened a bit.
"I'm already in school. I don't know if my parents will allow me to go."
"I see, I see. No problem, in fact your parents will be delightful. The school we will apply to is the Profound School of Martial Arts and Magic."
"WHAT?" Neo and Elise exclaimed at the same time.
"That school? One of the best schools in the whole continent?" Neo couldn't help but being excited.
"Yes, that school."
"But what about the tuition fees?" Elise asked.
"Money? I have tons of it.I have so much I can't spend it all even if I wanted to. So don't say you can't accept my money. You two are my followers. What man would I be if I can't pay for your education. Do you want that the others to look down upon me for having uneducated followers?"
The last sentence seemed to have washed away the last reluctance of Elise. Such a good girl, thinking of being a burden and all.

The whole time Neurocarnium didn't say anything.
I looked at him trying to figure out his feelings.
He looked at me and sighed.
"Too bad I can't attend with you master. I will be in the shadows protecting you."
I somehow pitied him.
I sighed and said.
"Don't worry. You will come with us. We will just say that you are a summoned servant."
"Summoning magic eh? This might actually work. The problem it that a summoned servant have a mark on them, unless we can't replicated it they won't believe us."
I nodded a few times.
"You mean something like that?" I waved my hand and a purple light shined on Neurocarnium's forehead.
The light faded away and a purple seal appeared on his forehead. It looked kind of like a pentagram.
I did my homework and studied some magic of this world. Casting it was no problem for me.
The seal wasn't just fake. I could feel a link with Neurocarnium allowing me to talk directly to his mind.
'Test, Neurocarnium can you hear me?'
'M-master? You really made a pact with me. This is too unbelievable.'
Neurocarnium's voice sounded excited.
With this pact magic I can give direct orders to Neurocarnium's mind. I could even force him. Of course I won't do such things. Neurocarnium knew what spell I casted and didn't resist. If the distance isn't to great I can even give him orders from afar.
Neurocarnium touched his forehead. He begun to laugh and jumped around.
"With this it can work. I'm going to school. I'm going to school."
Even though he was happy you couldn't really tell except by him jumping around.
I looked at the others. Neo smiled satisfied. Elise was also happy but I could see a bit of envy on her face, must be my imagination.
I cleared my throat to draw their attention to me.
"Ehem. So know that everything's settled you all should go home and tell your parents that you'll change school."

I stayed behind in the base. It was turning dark already. Since I'll be going to school in about a month I wanted to prepare for my debut. My soul force is quite strong but my magic is quite lacking in this body.
I took a munch of mana crystals and observed them for a while. Well, I could make a bunch of body enhancements but I can't help but wonder, what happens if I eat them.
Hmm, maybe it will have some effect since this mana crystal is made of pure mana.
I put the mana crystal in my mouth and swallowed it.
The mana crystal reached my stomach and it felt like it dissolved. I could feel a power surging inside my stomach.
No pain this time? This is new.
Suddenly I could feel an extreme pain. Mana leaked out of my body an my mana veins were on the verge of breaking.
I tried to not scream from the pain but I failed. I couldn't suppress my urge to scream.
"Aaaah!"
I closed my eyes and focused on the changes of my body. My mana pool showed signs of bursting apart. Cracks and fissures appeared on the my mana core. I will die. Well, I can still reset the time.

But some part of me didn't want to.
The mana core showed more and more signs of breaking.
Who needs a mana core anyway. It's just a container.
I opened my eyes, I could see the mana gushing out like crazy. Such a waste.I willed the mana to go back to my body.
Boom. My mana core exploded leaving a huge hole in my stomach. I spat out mouthfuls of blood.
My eyesight dimmed and I could feel my life fading away.
"Ah, sweet release of death...but Not today." I said with a weak voice.
I grabbed another mana crystal. The plan was to make my whole body to become the mana core.
I convert the mana crystal healing my injury and enhance my body so that my whole body become akin to a mana core. The mana core is not only there for storing mana. It also generates the innate mana.
Suddenly the mana stopped gushing out. I could feel the mana all over my body. It's not like before where I willed my mana through my mana veins. I feel like when I infuse my body with mana but much stronger.
I feel strong, I feel like I can grab the stars.
In my body there was a huge amount of mana. It rivals that of my original body but what shocked me was that it was only a fifth full. That means...
I took four more mana crystals and ate them. They dissolved and a huge amount of mana filled my body. This time there were no problems. Since the container has grew stronger, there was no leakage.
After a while my mana pool was full.
I didn't stop there. I planed to condense my mana to make room for more.
Grabbing another mana crystal I swallowed it. I could feel a pressure inside of me. I willed my mana to condense. With the help of the pressure my mana became much more rich and condensed.
After repeating it a few times I reached a limit.
It became more and more difficult.
A big change I noticed is that my mana regeneration has increased thirty fold. Not only that. It seems that my body also produces mana in the same density as my mana currently is.
Hmm, I want to condense my mana further. I need some aid, I can't do it with my strength alone.
I took a mana crystal and converted it into a pill that can help condense mana. Not only that, I also made a pill that can increase the rate I can cultivate the mana in the air.
I made about thirty of each pill. Since It can get dangerous I made some healing pills.
"Let's roll."
I ate all the pills at the same time except for the healing pills. After that I ate a lot of mana crystals in quick succession.
Closing my eyes I started to suck in the mana in the air into my body.
Boom. Something like a explosion accrued. I didn't have time to check, I kept my eyes closed and concentrated in condensing the mana. It was really difficult. The pressure build up and cracks appeared on my body. I ate a few healing pills to compensate.
The mana from outside got sucked in like vacuum cleaner on speed.
"Not good."
I couldn't keep up with the condensing of my mana and the pressure was on the verge of exploding my body.
Through the whole time I was in pain worse than death by thousand cuts.
I open my eyes. Looking around I see the dark sky. Endless amount of mana is getting sucked into my body. I couldn't stop it for some reason. I spat out a huge of amount of blood. In my body there where blue glistering parts.
"This is bad, I screwed up."
I converted more mana crystals into mana condensing pills. I ate hundred more of them.
"Only in a life death situation one can steel themselves. High risks come with high rewards. I Thorus am no coward." I yelled encouraging myself.
I ate more mana condensing pills and mana crystals.
The mana in my body suddenly started to form a blue sphere. There was some hint of red in it.
The moment the sphere appeared the suction force increased by a huge amount.
All the mana in my body moved to that sphere.
"This... I need more mana." I ate all the mana crystals I could get my hands on.
The moment the mana crystal released its power it got sucked in by the sphere.
"Hahaha, look at me. I will become a god." I became excited.
After a while the suction force stopped. The sphere inside my body extended outside my body. It was huge.
The sight was dumbfounding even for me. Than without warning or the sphere retracted in a blink of an eye. I could hear a roaring sound inside of my mind. My body started to levitate for a while. A pain in my eye appeared. It was so painful I almost lost consciousness. The moment I opened my eyes I couldn't believe it.
Nothing looked the same, I could only the see mana. It was not like I was blind. I could still see shapes they were distinct. It felt like I see the world with true eyes. I looked at my hands. I could see my mana raging like a storm. Usually it is pretty calm only when one uses a spell it gets stirred up but even than it is never to this extent. I could even see some red and blue lightning striking in my mana.
When I looked at my belly I almost fainted from the shock.
In the place where my mana core was there is a red and blue sun. They are orbiting around a small black planet.
That makes no sense, the little black planet should orbit the sun not the other way around.
"Well whatever looks cool at least."
"Thorus." I heard the yell of my parents.
I looked at the direction of the yell. They were still far away but I could see them clearly. My vision was no obstructed even thought I'm underground. I could see their mana and the mana core. I need to get used to this.

Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. His first act is to issue notice that no ship is to be without crew nor sit in dock or reserve for longer then required for maintenance and upkeep. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course. Where else is a kid from the gutters going to find that kind of freedom in the service of His Majesty? A [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] 2021.
