《Phantasmic Light》Chapter 4: Power

Lux thought her life was over as the boy began to scream in agony. His shirt melted off his body and his flesh began to physically boil. Any fat that was on him was being replaced with muscle as he began to lose his child like appearance. Before she knew it the body transformation was over and he was doubled over on the ground and his skin began to melt once more. This time a dragon was being etched into him. It was not only a marking much bigger than anyone’s normal contact, it was much bigger than hers! And she received a contract from a holy beast! Just how strong was this dreadful creature!? What was even more shocking was while he was being marked, the pressure increased, and everyone present was barely able to breathe, nevermind move.
The wings of the dragon had finished, spanning from his shoulder blades to his hips. The front arms of the dragon now began to form, scaling their way down his arms, and on the back of his hand, the claws were present. Everyone could tell the same thing was happening to his legs but his pants weren’t destroyed in this process.
“This child will bring about the end of the current order if he isn’t killed now.” Salus whispered into Lux’s mind.
“I-I don’t want to kill anyone..” Truly innocent, she couldn’t yet deal with the thought of taking someone else’s life.
“My dear Lux, we don’t possess enough power to harm a single hair on that boy’s head, forget about killing him. In a few years we might be able to face him, but that chance is rather slim.” Salus simply couldn’t fathom what kind of fate the world had now. This boy had the monstrous dragon as his contract. The eldest dragon that was in existence. Exidium, the Dragon of Wrath.

“Would Father be able to deal with him?” She asked innocently.
“I am uncertain. He may be able to simply because he doesn’t yet know how to control the overwhelming power that he’s being granted right now.”
The screaming stopped and it was replaced by a groan. The boy got up and shook his head as if trying to wake up again. The pressure was released and the guards began to swarm around him as if they were trying to put him to death on the spot. Soon she could no longer see him as the guards numbered many to his one.
“My dear Lux, it would be best if you look away.” She obediently closed her eyes. That boy isn’t the one controlling his body. She could only think to herself as the slaughter was about to commence.
“Broken Stars” It was the boy’s voice, but the kind of power that was being wielded no doubt was the work of the old demon. A light condensed in his hand and then he crushed it, causing the energy to go haywire. When he opened his fist, the energy was forced out in all directions in a black wave of malice. The guards who were the closest didn’t even have a corpse to leave behind and then those slightly farther away either died from shock or from being split clean in half. The wave collapsed as it was about to touch the princess it faded from existence.
“For the sake of change one must become the devil.” The old dragon’s voice replaced the boys as he walked closer and closer to the princess who was hiding in the corner. “But he seems unwilling to hurt you for now, so I won’t force him to. He is the boss after all.”

Lux opened her eyes to see the gentle face of the boy, only now his eyes were a deep purple. And the expression on his face wasn’t one a 13 year old boy would be able to make. It was one of sorrow and regret. Something that only a being that has experienced countless years would be able to make. His hand was warm as he placed it on her face and then instilled some energy into her and made her pass out temporarily.
Lux was barely conscious when the boy walked out the door then disappeared from her sight altogether. The next thing she knew she was in her bed in the castle. Was it a dream?
“My dear Lux, I assure you it was real. That demon is loose in the world now. He didn’t even use a fraction of his power to slaughter your elite guard and everyone else present.” Salus’ voice was a wakeup call and assured her that she didn’t dream that up.
“Why did I survive?” She was confused as to why he didn’t kill her as well.
“That boy saved you from the old monster.”
The boy known as Noctis Lucifer is now the country's most wanted criminal, responsible for the infamous Red Equinox. The only survivor was the princess of the country, while several high ranking officials and countless knights died with only a thought from the boy.

Divine Progress
Progress is a dubious god. After failing him, three people are banished from modern times and sent to another world. Seemingly out of place, Christoph is snatched from his own time and plunged into a world of violence and magic with no deity to lend him support. Instead, Progress has seen fit to curse him with an eternal hunger for magical energy. Branded as a demon, he must fight for survival while battling the servants of the god who sent him there, struggling against the 'gift' that Progress bestowed upon him and the past he sought to abandon. Can he make his way across the lands and gather enough strength to survive without the blessings of the Divine? Or will the gods bend him to their will, breaking him if he seeks to resist? This is not a short story, and the plot will take many twists and turns before Christoph's journey comes to a close. After all, it is not the destination, but the Progress that matters in the end. Like many other stories on RoyalRoad, this is my first piece. Feedback is more than welcome, so please leave a reply if you have a comment or question.

Liana in between Worlds
17 year old Liana is not as surprised as most people would be when she meets Inaya, coming from another world searching for a mysterious danger that could be disastrous for both worlds. She's always seen things others could not see, and she often finds it easier to befriend strange creatures from dreamworlds than her classmates. But now she's involved in a possible plot to eradicate our whole species, which makes her travel through a dead alien city and the oak wood of the Nummerfa who believe that our species are dangerous demons from hell, and other places in several different worlds. All she actually wanted was read her Tolkien book, or sit and watch the stars without being bothered by the existential problems of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. And how is she going to even explain her absence at school? 'Liana in Between Words' is a weird genre-defying mix of portal fantasy and scifi in a tale of friendship, loneliness, and the role of humans in the multiverse. This one contains absolutely no romance and no serious trigger warnings for sex, excessive violence, bad words or heavily traumatising content if you can handle the idea that there are people somewhere who think -maybe not completely without reason- that our species are destructive demons that should be eradicated.
