《Bob's Ascension to Godhood》018: So slow?
After the disappointing, albeit profitable quest, Bob headed back to the adventuring guild.
According to what the secretary had said, he would be able to upgrade to an R ranked adventurer after completing the quest.
Bob still couldn't get over the fact that the S rank was, in fact, the lowest of all the ranks, and that the ranking system actually went so far. Apparantly, the so-called "adventuring guild" in this city was actually a tiny branch of a larger adventuring guild, which would explain why there were so many ranks and barely any people at those ranks.
Now that he had completed his first quest, he would, as stated above, be upgraded to an R-ranked adventurer, and by claiming credit for killing a Rat King, he could probably be upgraded to a... a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r... Q ranked adventurer. This was getting kind of confusing.
Despite this being a bit confusing to Bob, he still felt his brain... Yes, he had a brain! Expanding.
And he had finally reverted to thinking that he wasn't below average.
He had always thought that he was one of the best in his class, but then with the recent growth spurt of his very much existent brain, he had realized that he was probably around the bottom of his class. But then, through further thinking, Bob had then realized that poverty existed, yes, poverty actually existed, and that some people couldn't even afford to go to school.
It was strange how Bob was learning much more about Earth when he was on another planet than he ever had when he was still on Earth.
So, with that in mind, Bob headed to the adventuring guild.

"Excuse me, I'm back from my quest."

"So slow?"
The secretary, who had been sitting a the desk all day, ( When did she ever take a break? Bob remembered asking her about something at 12 yesterday. ) looked up from whatever secretaries around here do without paper.
"I was held up by a Rat King."
Bob held his head up and proudly stated why it took him so long to exterminate a bunch of rats.
"I repeat, so slow?"
Bob stared at the secretary.
The secretary stared back, having nothing better to do. Here, paper and phones were nonexistent, so secretaries couldn't stare at blank sheets of paper, marvel at printers, play games or have access to social media on smartphones, make calls and gossip, or whatever it is that secretaries did on Earth. Because of this, the secretaries here were much nicer and much more bored and thus didn't state openly that people were wasting their time, as they really didn't have anything better to do.
Now, back to the point.
"I killed a Rat King, and I have proof of it, so does this mean that I can get to the...a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r... Q rank?"
Bob then made a fool out of himself by showing that he didn't really have a proper education, or just wasn't paying attention to it. For all he knew, his parents were secretly aristocrats and he didn't know anything about it because they weren't really simpletons and thus kept quiet about money that they didn't want Bob to throw away.
That was probably what actually happened.
Thinking back, Bob didn't think his actual last name was actually something. His parents probably just didn't want him to expose all of their secrets to the outside world with their real names.
"Yes, you should be able to, but why did it take so long?"
"Ah, right."
Bob recalled the self-proclaimed "Super Mega Supreme Cheese Overlord".
"Err... No reason."

Risen
Note: Slight edits to early chapters (and removal of one chapter - previously chapter 2) have been made 2/2/21 The city, my city, had once been alive in a way that was hard to describe. Thriving, active, hopeful. Vibrant. But life, as I had come to learn, sometimes possesses only the most tenuous of grasps. Finally, in the end, it became my city - mine alone. I was, after all, the only one left. Worse, it was entirely my fault. There was red in my ledger that could never be wiped clean. Not while I still lived, anyway. This story follows Eran, a man who became the opposite of everything he had ever wanted to be; in a world where superpowers began to appear in a rare few, his lack of control over his own power relegated him to the role of a terrible villain - the Reaper, named so for the countless lives that he absorbed and made his own, each only furthering his deadly lack of control. Gone mad with guilt and isolation, he strove for a single heroic act - his own demise. Death was less permanent than he hoped. Centuries later, he woke to a changed world and in a body not his own. Unfortunately, his power came with him. Yet this time, things would be different. This time, he had a chance to bring it under control. He could never truly make up for the things he had done; he could never achieve redemption. That wouldn't stop him from trying to be a hero. Until You Do It Right
The world ended on December thirty-first of the year two thousand and twenty, precisely at the stroke of midnight. The human race began to be systematically exterminated by the spawn of the System. We were given a chance to defeat them, to take back our place at the top of the food chain. We failed. The first to perish were those who bravely rebelled. The soldiers. The defenders. One by one, they fell. In their final moments, they begged for aid. Nobody replied. The next to succumb were those who feebly cowered. The deniers. The leeches. Together, they fell. In their final moments, they cried out into the darkness. Countless voices replied in kind. The last to decline were those who shamelessly ran. The deserters. The cowardly. Alone, they fell. In their final moments, they whimpered quietly. There was nobody left to answer. The final human to die was a survivor. A runner. As he died, he begged for salvation. His prayers were answered. He was offered a chance to save himself, along with all of humanity, and he took it. This is his story. “I sat in the dark and thought: There’s no big apocalypse. Just an endless procession of little ones.”― Neil Gaiman, Signal to Noise. I am absolutely new to writing and will take any and all constructive criticism. Please give feedback, it is greatly appreciated. I will update the tags as they change, and I hope that you enjoy this little story I'm writing! Quick warning: Seamus is intentionally a flawed character, and this story is going to explore those flaws and perhaps even change a few of them. I do not agree with all of his actions, but it is what it is.
