《Modern Deity》Chapter 31: First Match, Finish

Got this one out faster that I expected. Don't worry peeps, this isn't the only match that Kyte has. If he wins, of course. Anyway, enjoy.
(Any grammar mistakes? Point those nasty dudes out. I've gone over this twice now so hopefully there isn't any left. Hopefully.)
EDIT: I laugh whenever I click back to this chapter. It's quite amusing because I know the full picture while the readers don't. You don't realize that I wrote this on purpose, not just to show that Kyte was a power-hungry and power-drunk idiot. There's more than one reason to everything. Sometimes it takes more than a simple thought to figure everything out. Apparently Kyte doesn't know this.
Also, Kyte is only a 'genius' in comprehension. You know, experiments, theories, puzzles and what not. If you think about his past, you'll know that he has almost no social skills nor the emotional capacity to feel remorse toward someone he doesn't even know. Think about it.

An immense sense of danger welled up within Kyte, and he instantly activated the defensive formation around his robes while stepping to the left and bringing out Heavy Air.
A swift shadow appeared behind Kyte and a white light flashed across his back. The barrier around Kyte instantly shattered and Kyte felt a weight like a mountain slam onto his back. The impact hit his robes, however, they weren’t punctured. Kyte was blasted forward at a weird angle across the entire arena before smashing into one of the walls. The wall greatly indented when Kyte impacted, with large pieces of rubble flying in every direction.
Terris stood in his position, with a slightly confused expression on his face. He expected at least a little retaliation from Kyte, but all he got was a frantic and quick panic. In Terris’s eyes, Kyte could do nothing against him.
A few seconds went by, and Terris only sighed. He looked up at the announcer section, which was placed opposite of the private balcony for the Wux family, hoping for the match to end. However, he was given a simple shake of the head.
Confused, Terris looked at the dust cloud where Kyte had impacted. It was mostly gone now, and Terris could see a dark figure standing in the cloud. A red light spun around Kyte and then it seemed to be absorbed by him. Terris felt a sudden change in the area around Kyte, and to his surprise, he suddenly saw Kyte’s dark figure disappear.
That was only for a split second, as Terris was slightly surprised at Kyte’s sudden increase in power. He immediately got into his stance and calmly waited for Kyte to arrive as he silently watched him move.
Kyte’s figure instantly appeared in-front of Terris, and he watched Kyte swing down his blade toward his head. Terris effortlessly moved his blade to block Kyte’s attack while kicking his leg out toward Kyte’s side instantly after parrying Kyte’s blade. Terris’s foot connected, pushing Kyte back several meters before he was able to stabilize himself.
Terris moved first. Kyte only saw a smooth blur move toward him and small white flash of light. Kyte instinctively lifted his blade and used the several different formations within his robes and on Heavy Air to block Terris’s attack. However, Terris’s frontal attack was merely an afterimage, and Kyte reacted too slowly to block the sword slicing his back.
His robes once again defended him, however, the force from the attack wasn’t diminished. Kyte flew forward and bounced several times on the ground, creating large cracks in the earth with each impact.

Heh, at first I wasn’t able to see him at all. After using all of my buffs, I’m able to see a blur. I can’t even do anything against this guy.
Terris silently landed on the ground and calmly looked toward Kyte. He watched as Kyte once again stood up, and he visually saw the bent bones quickly snap back into place. A look of surprise appeared upon Terris’s face, but he quickly returned to normal. This time, instead of close combat, Terris stood his ground. A white light shrouded his sword as he lifted it above his head and instantly swung it down.
A crescent wave of white light soared toward Kyte. The ground beneath revealed cracks and even steam lifted off its surface. As Kyte watched the energy moving toward him, he faintly smiled and lifted Heavy Air. Crimson energy poured out from Heavy Air which had Kyte’s Spiritual Energy woven inside it.
When the white light smashed against Kyte’s sword, a loud explosion sounded off as the sound waves visibly spread outward. Kyte felt the incredible pressure, however, it wasn’t as powerful as Terris’s physical attacks. Kyte swiped his arm to the right, forcefully pushing the white light around and into the wall behind him. The entire wall was crushed under the immense force, though fortunately the barrier around the area stopped the energy from passing all the way through.
After seeing this, Terris felt even more surprise. Even if that attack was his most basic energy attack, it still held the power of a Silver S rank. If his suspicion was correct, then Kyte wouldn’t have been able to even deflect his attack. That made Terris think that maybe Kyte really was a genuine S ranker, albeit a Bronze S ranker, that was skilled with energy attacks rather than close combat.
To Terris, this what a bad thing. Considering that he mainly trains in close combat, only his physical attacks and defenses are strong. In comparison, his energy attacks and defenses are rather weak. Terris and Kyte were basically opposites, if Terris’s thinking was correct.
And actually, he is correct. Kyte’s close combat and physical attacks aren’t his most preferred type of combat. His energy, mainly because of how powerful his Spiritual Energy is, is much more powerful than his physical side. That’s also because his physical strength is limited at its very peak amount of power for the sixth stage. Unfortunately, Kyte hasn’t been able to breakthrough yet. Along with the physical limit, Kyte could also feel that the speed of his Spiritual energy practice was slowing down, which is definitely not a good thing.
Kyte looked at Terris as if he had sensed something. Crimson energy once again flowed out from Heavy Air, moving in waves around Kyte. Spiritual Energy was already woven within it, thus increasing its power by several folds. Kyte slashed his hand, revealing blood that rose into the air and expanded outward just to shine and quickly spin around his figure. It flowed back into his body, and the crimson energy’s power rose by one more level.
Shadow Twins were already upon his hands, and Kyte slowly relaxed his arm to point Heavy Air toward the ground. The crimson energy around it destroyed the ground it touched like a destructive wave of malice. The ground would turn to ash and then be destroyed even further as the energy sucked it in, never to be seen again.
Kyte waved his left hand, releasing a gentle energy which created a large turbulent of wind in the arena. Terris was a little confused about this, however, Kyte just faintly smiled. Then, his figure seemed to slowly blend with the wind. He suddenly disappeared and instantly reappeared a few meters behind Terris.

Using the flow of the air current, Kyte’s arm followed the air direction and slashed toward Terris, releasing a large wave of crimson energy that quickly swept through the air. Kyte immediately disappeared directly after releasing the energy, flowing along the air currents in the arena.
Terris immediately turned around and lifted his sword, which was enshrouded with a white light. He also lifted his left hand, which had a white glove covering it, and pressed it against the blade of his sword. Instantly, the white light grew increasingly stronger right before the crimson energy impacted.
The crimson energy smashed into the white light, causing the wind around Terris to dangerously distort as a shock-wave exploded out and destroyed the crazy wind currents. An invisible energy swept through those pockets of silent air, causing the atmosphere to once again be full of wild currents of wind.
The energy released from Kyte surprised Terris, as he didn’t expect it to be so powerful. However, he isn’t an S rank for nothing. He also reinforced his defense with another piece of equipment just in case, fortunately for him he actually needed it to help defend. The energy pushed him back a few feet, leaving marks on the ground where his feet dragged across it.
However, the power within the crimson energy slowly faded until it eventually disappeared. Terris stood up straight and looked around to try to find Kyte. However, it was as if he had disappeared with the wind.
In fact, Kyte had just thought of this idea when he was thinking of Terris’s defense against energy attacks. He thought that he should try it out, and fortunately for him, he mastered Windwalker the moment he disappeared with the wind. Though, instead of being WITH the wind, it was like he WAS the wind. A complete fusion between Kyte and the wind allowed him to freely move in every direction the wind allowed him to. And, actually, Kyte controlled all the wind in the arena because of his sudden mastery of Windwalker.
Even though that’s the first skill that Kyte has fully mastered, just that one skill can hold so much power. It’s only a movement skill to begin with, so Kyte felt excited for complete mastery of his offensive skills.
Kyte once again reappeared behind Terris and released crimson energy. The two of them exchanged multiple energy clashes before the wind eventually died down. The ground in the arena was almost completely destroyed by this time. Kyte softly landed on a destroyed piece of earth with small drips of sweat falling off his face. He of course already activated the cooling formation within his robes, but the sweat was mostly due to his increasing exhaustion.
“You’re pretty skilled. However, you’re not really an S rank, are you?” Terris calmly asked.
“...Why do you say that?” Kyte asked.
“I can tell. Usually a Bronze S ranker can keep up with me for longer than this, and even physically injure me. However, I’ve barely wasted any energy and you are clearly tired. Tell me, how did you get your S rank?”
Kyte remained silent for several seconds, seemingly catching his fast-paced breath. Terris asked him another question:
“What’s your secret?”
Kyte faintly smiled, “I guess I’ll show you.”
During these several seconds, Kyte was going over the several different clashes he and Terris had. The several times when he would launch an attack, the movement of his body with the wind, the way energy was released from his body, everything. However, just several seconds wasn’t enough time. So, Kyte decided to use the black light to test its power and other hypotheses.
Standing up, Kyte calmly looked at Terris. A smooth, water-like black light escaped from Kyte’s body and wrapped around Heavy Air. Kyte was trying to fuse the black light with anything that he could. Crimson energy exploded from Heavy Air, however, it seemed to pass through the black light like it wasn’t even there. Kyte once again created large wind currents in the arena and began to move.
As he was moving along the wind, he tried using his Spiritual Energy to fuse with the black light. To his great surprise, his Spiritual Energy actually didn’t go through the black light, but was actually blocked by it. Kyte decided at that moment to stop everything else and continue to only use Spiritual Energy to fuse with the black light.
Kyte reappeared in-front of Terris.
“Hey, Terris. I have to thank you.”
“For what?” Terris asked confusingly.
“You helped me realize something that I didn’t realize before. I honestly can’t believe I never tried doing it.”
“...?”
“Anyway, I want to finish this match quickly so I have to practice my new discovery. So, goodbye, Terris.”
Kyte formed a small sphere of black light within his hand and outstretched his arm. Kyte silently looked away, and transformed the black light into small spark of energy.
Almost instantly, the spark transformed into a small ball of energy that simultaneously expanded. However, just as the ball of energy was going to explode, a dark figure appeared in-front of Kyte.
The figure reached out its hand and grabbed the ball of energy, absorbing it. Thus, the energy disappeared, much to Kyte’s to surprise.
At first, Kyte thought Terris was the one in-front of him, but Kyte noticed that Terris never moved. When Kyte saw the figure in-front of him, he was confused because he felt like he had seen the man before, but couldn’t place a name to his face. However, once Kyte saw the man’s apparel, he instantly remembered.
“D...David Wux?!”
David lightly smiled and pulled back his hand.
“Were you really go to kill Terris here, Kyte?”
“Uh-uh, ye..yes…”
David sighed and continued, “Well, I don’t allow killing to happen in the arena, did you forget?”
“-Oh...yea, I forgot that…” Kyte’s face suddenly turned even paler than it was before.
“Why were you going to kill him, Kyte?”
“Uh, because...I needed to, uh...end the match...so…”
“Kyte, you idiot. Killing someone isn’t the easy way out. I guarantee that if you had killed Terris, you would not have left here alive. Terris’s support is like a mountain while yours is like a pebble. Think carefully next time.”
“...Y, yes, sir.”
David turned around and looked at Terris, simply nodding.
“The winner of this match is Kyte Stone! Is there anyone who thinks otherwise?” David stated.
However, of course, no one dared to make a sound. Who would provoke David Wux, the only Fighter within Sector 31? The head of Sector 31? No one would. Therefore, Kyte won his first match against an S ranker, even though David himself interfered before Kyte did something that he would not be able to go back on.
And, what David said is true. Kyte is new to GG, he has absolutely no backing at all. Terris on the other hand, has been an S ranker for several years. He’s one of the strongest Gifted in Sector 31. He definitely has the full support of at least one of the top three families, if not all of them in general. The consequences to killing Terris would be, without a doubt, death.
David turned back to Kyte and said:
“Follow me. I want to show you something. It’s quite important, however...Actually, you can go see your friends first. I’ll be waiting in the waiting room.”
“Huh? Oh, yes, sir.” Kyte nodded.
David suddenly vanished, as if he wasn’t even there to begin with. Kyte felt quite embarrassed, having just been reprimanded by David Wux himself. Kyte looked over at Terris only to find him releasing a cold, heartless aura around himself.
After knowing that Kyte was going to kill him without hesitation, Terris’s opinion of Kyte suddenly dropped to the lowest point. Terris knows that if David hadn’t interfered, then he would’ve left this world. Terris felt a small amount of hatred surface, mostly because there were many people that would be greatly saddened by his death. His own personal family, as well as his close friends that he’s been fighting with for years.
However, even though Kyte felt embarrassed, he felt no remorse. Firstly, he doesn’t know Terris or anything about him. Kyte has no clue that he has a loving wife and children, along with close friends. Terris’s influence stretches farther than Kyte knows, as he has helped multiple families and branches all across Sector 31. Kyte doesn’t know any of this.
This is precisely why Kyte would have never gotten out alive if he did kill Terris. Without enough information, Kyte won’t have the necessary knowledge to deal with his opponents. Without enough power, he won’t be able to deal with them by force.
However, Kyte could care less of this at the moment. The thing he’s focused on is the black light. His next match is the next day at five p.m., so he has time to thoroughly think it through.
Kyte silently told himself to be prepared next time, because making strong enemies is the one thing that Kyte doesn’t want to do. There’s no way to get rid of the growing hatred that Terris has for Kyte. Kyte doesn’t even know what to do about Terris except walk to the elevator, which just appeared, and step into it.
Because of the embarrassment Kyte felt, he couldn’t even look Terris in the eye as the elevator doors shut.

A Fragmented Mind
"Hi there. My name is Richard Maddox, but my — admittedly nonexistent — friends call me Rick. I live in a world of superheroes and villains. You think you're good at deluding yourself? Well, stand back, because it's time for a master to show you his craft. Welcome to my life, the life of a madman." This story was originally inspired by the 'Legion' novella series written by Brandon Sanderson. If you've read those books and liked them, it might be worth giving this a read. The same goes if you haven't read them either, I guess. (Currently re-writing earlier chapters)
