《Modern Deity》Chapter 5: Breakthrough

Within an outside stadium was a large stage that had a giant audience facing its front. The bright sun shined down its piercing rays of light onto the groups of people on the ground. Directly in-front of the large stage, which had various decorations like balloons plastered across it, sat the Senior class of Kyte's high school. Seated behind them were their family members and friends, all watching them receive the 'diplomas' as they crossed the stage.
"Sarah Goldsman!"
After the principal said her name, many students and people in the audience clapped and cheered.
Currently, Kyte was seated near the end of the rows of chairs. There were several more students before it was Kyte's turn to receive his diploma. Also, Kyte had turned down the opportunity to read a speech before the Graduation ceremony began.
Unfortunately, he didn't have any guardians to help him with the process of buying the required attire for graduation. Although Kyte's grandfather is his legal guardian, he only gives Kyte enough money to live. Of course, Kyte asked him for some extra money in order to buy the graduation attire, and his grandfather complied. However, Kyte had to complete the required procedure in order to purchase his graduation gown and hat.
About fifteen minutes had passed by, and now...
"Kyte Stone!"
Absolute silence. If it was only a normal silence then it wouldn't have been that bad. Aside from a few faint, pitiable claps that only lasted a couple seconds, there was no other sound. Kyte stood up and leisurely walked down the predetermined path, up the steps, and toward the principle. The principle was a older man that had graying hair, which was almost entirely grey, and he also seemed to be getting wrinkles as the skin on his face was faintly sagging around his cheeks. He eyed Kyte as he nonchalantly walked toward him and held out his hand. The principle gave a sincere smile before meeting Kyte's hand with his own.
Finding this quite amusing, Sol'keer couldn't help but say:
"Looks like no one likes you haha!"
"You know what they say. If you have nothing good to say, don't say anything at all. You should really learn from that."
"Heh, whatever."
As Kyte shook the hand of the principal, he looked directly in Kyte's eyes and said:
"Kyte, have my sincere congratulations."
Kyte let go of his hand and replied with a faint smile:
"Thank-you."
Kyte proceeded on to shake the hands of the board directors and exited the stage to travel back to his assigned seat. He could feel a hard stare in his back, however, he didn't want to turn around to look because he already knew who it was. It was Asshole.
"Don't worry kid, you'll get your chance soon enough. You're almost at the mid Knight stage."
"Yea, I know. But my patience is wearing thin."
What Kyte didn't realize was that Asshole was not the only one staring at him. And, these stares weren't filled with anger, except Asshole, but filled with small amounts of confusion. Because in Kyte's pitch black hair were small streaks of red. It was so small that some people thought that there might be something wrong with their eyes. Most people dismissed it as the lighting, and others just didn't blame Kyte if he wanted to change something about himself. Other than what he already has, of course.
As he sat down, Kyte felt an abnormal presence in the giant room. It's mostly due to his new powers, and partly due to a weird chill that swept through his body. He swiftly looked over the audience but he didn't see anything unusual.

The heck was that?...
What he had missed in the audience was a group of three people. The one in the middle had silver hair that reached down to her waist, and looked as if it reflected all light from its surface. To the right of the woman was a man with light brown hair. He wore a pair of glasses, but even without them he would probably be able to have the vision of a hawk. The left of the silver-haired woman was another young woman that looked to be in her early twenties. Her hair was red like a rose, her eyes as sharp as she looked at the young man in the graduation seats. She licked her red lips with her moist, pink tongue as she carefully reminded herself to not forgot why she was here.
"Rose, why can't you calm down whenever you see a cute boy?"
"You'll neeeeever understand a young woman like me. Probably 'cuz you're just an old woman."
The light-haired man laughingly smiled as he said:
"Watch what you say to Boss. She has much more appeal than you do, kid."
"I'm not a kid! I'm twenty-two and I have plenty of sexiness!"
"Yea, to immature little kids! You're leagues away from Boss."
"Haaaa, can you two shut up please? I'm trying to figure out exactly what this kid's power is."
"Does it really matter? I doubt it will be as powerful as Shadow's, and that's saying something."
"Old man Dan, you're only saying that because you're stronger than Shadow. Plus, I bet Shadow could beat you if you were the same age. Too bad he's like, what, a hundred years younger than you?"
"Do you want your face bashed in, slut?"
"What did you call me?!"
The silver-haired woman only softly face-palmed as she was glad she had put up a sound barrier just in case something like this happened.
"If you two don't shut up right now, I'll take away both of your allowances!"
""HUH?! I'm sorry!""
The two quickly apologized, although all three of them knew that the two of them would never really stop.
The silver-haired woman was quite perplexed by Kyte in all honesty. When she first saw him, she noticed that his power was very small compared to her and the others in the orphanage. But now, it seemed like his power had at least tripled! This was inconceivable to her! In just one day, this kid had improved so much!
I absolutely have to hook him in. But how do I do that? Rose could...no, this kid is different from the other horny teenagers. Wait...is he? Who knows what he does all day long in his house...But, we are in desperate need of help...
The silver-haired woman stood up and said:
"Come on you two, lets go. There's nothing more for us here."
"Alriiight!"
The trio left, and Kyte was still quietly sitting, waiting for graduation to be over.
-One hour later-
Kyte was patiently waiting amidst the cars in the parking lot, carefully watching Asshole and his friends.
Gosh, how many friends does this douchebag have?
"You just have to patiently wait for the right moment to strike!"
Yea, I'm not stupid.
"You sure seem like it sometimes."
Kyte only rolled his eyes and continued to watch Asshole. Eventually, Asshole joined several other people in a car and they drove off away from the school.
"Gosh damn it."
"Haha, good luck next time."

"I guess so."
Suddenly, Kyte felt a weird presence around him.
This feels exactly the same as during Graduation!
Kyte quickly began to run home. Swerving through the mass of cars, Kyte retrieved a mask from within the storage necklace.
Putting the mask on, Kyte's body suddenly grew three inches, his hair turned light brown and grew shorter, and his clothes turned from a dark sweater into a blue overcoat. His pants and shoes also turned into something different. The mask disappeared the same time his appearance changed as well. His graduation gown grew with him as well.
What Kyte used was a Concealing Mask, a very common item inside the storage necklace. Along with other items like medicines and pills that help with practice, the Concealing Mask was one of the things the things that Kyte unlocked in the Novice stage. He just never had any reason to use any of the items until now. The Concealing Mask not only changes Kyte's total appearance, but it also hides his power. Hence the name 'Concealing Mask'.
With the influx of students filling the parking lot, Kyte quickly merged with the crowd. After about three minutes, the mysterious presence disappeared.
"Whew."
After waiting around other students for several more minutes just in case, Kyte walked home. More like speed walked but he still traveled back home.
Once he got into his room, he collapsed onto his bed.
"Well, that was quite interesting." Sol'keer exclaimed.
"Yea, that weird presence is pretty-"
"No, not that. I was talking about the...'graduation' ceremony. My world never had anything like that for education from what I can recall."
"The people from your world must be stupid then."
"Hey! At least the people from my world are able to travel to other planets! Ha! You can't do that with your silly technology!"
"What?! You guys can do that?!"
"Of course, it's not that hard."
"Uh huh, and how long did it take for a a low-talent pig like you to be able to do that?"
"The Hell did you call me?! It only took me eight hundred years. It wasn't that long."
"Yea, EIGHT HUNDRED YEARS. You have to remind yourself that you're talking to an eighteen year old here."
"And you have to remind yourself that you're talking with a four millennium year old man! How about that, huh?"
"That doesn't change anything. I bet I'm still smarter than you."
"Oh yea? Try me."
"What's the square root of two eighty nine?"
"Um..uh..squair?...What?"
"I told you you're stupid."
"Shut up! I'm still older than you!"
"And you act like a kid."
"I...can still have fun if I want to. Doing everything so seriously takes too much of a toll."
"I guess so. Just don't turn into a baby, alright?"
"I won't go that far. I still have my dignity."
"Anyway, what do you think that weird presence was back at graduation?"
"That was someone purposefully showing you their power. Basically they're showing themselves to you in a very open manner."
"Oh? Then I'm not the only one?"
"When did I say you were?"
"Hmph, whatever. So? What's that person's power like?"
"I don't know. I don't recognize what sect that person is from."
"Huh? What do you mean by sect? You're saying there's someone out there that has a technique similar to mine?"
"Not similar in skills and what not, but yes, that is one hundred percent possible. That's the only explanation I have. I could never forget the feeling of someone's Internal pressure."
"And? What's your guess to what stage that person is in?"
"I dunno. But comparing it with yours, I would have to assume that person is in a power stage equivalent to Bloodrage technique's stage seven."
"Stage seven?! I don't even have stage seven's name unlocked! How the heck am I gonna defend myself against that?!"
"Don't worry! If you get attacked by that person, I'll use my remaining Spirit power to forcefully take out a defensive equipment from the storage necklace and make you able to use it for a short time."
"No! I doubt that person knows where I live. Or maybe they do, and they are just waiting for me to come out. I haven't bought actual groceries in about a week...Sheese man, I don't want to go out there!"
"Holy shit, I didn't expect you to be such a scared-y cat! Besides, the energy you receive from practicing should be enough to last you for about a month, two at the most. Sorry kid, you're gonna have to wait on that Asshole guy for later."
"Yea. I'm gonna have to train seriously this whole month. Those pills are gonna be a great help."
--Three weeks later--
Small *bang* sounds could be heard coming from Kyte's home. His backyard has been thoroughly destroyed, and there are palm imprints everywhere. There was a faint smell of death around the area as well, which made the atmosphere seem deadly.
A single white and red colored energy shaped like a palm exploded forth from Kyte's right hand. It shot forward as if it wasn't restrained by the air around it, and it hit the ground with a loud boom. A deep imprint was left in the ground as dirt was sprayed up and out from where the palm had landed.
"I can't seem to get it right."
"Don't worry, you just need one more final step and you will have mastered the first stage of Raging Palms."
"Wait, first stage?"
"Yes, first stage. You'll only unlock this information once you complete the first stage, but I might as well tell you know. The second stage allows you to manipulate several energy bursts at once, basically dealing double, triple, and even quadruple the regular damage. The more skilled you are at Internal energy manipulation, and the familiar you are with the Raging Palms, the easier it will be."
"That's good. Time to practice Windwalker now."
Kyte took one step, and controlling the Internal energy at his feet, an air current quickly followed as he lightly stepped in each direction. He moved very fast, almost being so fast that if you blinked you would miss it.
Kyte unlocked his first movement skill, Windwalker, when he broke through into the low Earth stage. It allows very fast movement, and it was actually created as a quick escape skill. That is, once Kyte is proficient enough with it it will be.
It took Kyte a week and a half to break through into the Earth stage, and another week and a half to break through to the middle Earth stage. It seems the early massive energy absorption rate finally cooled down once he reached late Knight Stage.
After Kyte was done practicing the Windwalker skill, he went back inside to drink some water and rest.
"I have about a week of food left at best. Luckily I have basically unlimited water."
"Don't worry. In a month's time, you'll definitely be at least low Sentinel stage."
Yea, but you'll be gone in a week...
After Kyte rested, he started his breathing technique until he absorbed enough energy to edge ever so closer to the late Earth stage.
