Baal POV

Its been a week since mom told us about who we were and today we are being allowed inside the church to learn light magic by one of the bishops.

Going around within the town was startling I felt really small when I saw all the people and buildings. Me and Lilian have only ever stayed on the plains outside of town or at the edge of town were only small houses stand. To be in the middle of such a large city was almost scary but we had our pets with us. Plum and Rook walked next to us while the our fox pups, Kitsu is my pup and Kumi Lilian’s pup, sat on our shoulders with their tail wrapped around our neck. As we walked with mom we drew lots of looks from the people. A stand sells man called out to mom he was a food seller.

Merchant: Miss Steph, how is your morning?

Stephanie: good, do you need something?

Merchant: well I was just wondering what my favorite customer was doing with two children and monsters.

Stephanie: these are my adopted kids and their pets, please treat them well.

She gave a kind smile and said the phrase loud enough for everyone in the area to hear. She was planning to have rumors spread to make sure her kids weren’t treated badly. And it worked like a charm almost immediately the rumors started to spread as people talked. Mom urged us on and we headed to the Cathedral.

I wouldn’t be lying if I said I was scared when I saw the size of the Cathedral. It made me feel so tiny and I could see Lilian was the same. Mom pulled us in and inside we saw that it looked smaller inside so that meant there were more floors upstairs.

Steph: ok just so you know kids, when you enter a church any church really you first go and pray to the god and thank them for taking care of us and giving us protection.

She led us to the altar and kneeled down and prayed. We did the same as her and thanked the goddess for taking care of us and our mom. Then we headed up the stairs and into a large room. There were some strange symbols on the walls all over the room. In the center there was a man sitting cross legged meditating like we did. He had black and grey hair which said he might be around 50-60 years old but his face wasn’t as wrinkled as you would think a man his age would normally be.

Steph: Bishop Slade, I have brought them.

The eye of the man opened slowly as he looked towards us before giving us a wide smile like you would see a grandfather would give to his grandchildren.

Slade: oh you’re finally here, I’ve been anxious to see you two ever since you were put under Stephanie’s care.

Lilian: mom who is he?

Steph: he is one of the 12 bishops of our church. Please always be respectful towards him, he an important man.

Slade: oh please Stephanie you can call me by my name or just uncle but only when we are alone any other time please call my sir like any other person.

I was curious about the man, he looked gentle but I couldn’t help be anxious around him.

Steph: sir please stop releasing that trace amount of mana its scaring Baal he is still weak against light magic.

Slade: oh sorry its a natural reflex I do when near someone from the underworld. It attracts strong ones and repels weak ones.

Steph: I hope you can have him gain resistance for light magic. It will become a great hindrance when he starts adventuring later on.

Slade: yes I plan to but it will hurt a lot now then shall we begin.

Mom bowed and left us and our pets to the Bishop.

Slade: now then I am curious about how strong your magic is so Baal please fire off your magic.

I nod and put Kitsu down and summon a ball of fire. I fuel it with my mana and fire it at him though it does nothing to him as he swats it away like hitting a fly.

Slade: Imp Fire hmm much stronger than a normal imp but that must be thanks to your lineage. Can you use darkness magic yet?

Baal: no sir. This is the only thing I can do but Rook can mix fire and darkness to make a black fireball

Slade: oh please do so I want to see all of them.

I order Rook to charge and fire a ball of fire. His horn glows and a black fire ball appears and rushes at the bishop and like my own he slaps it away.

Slade: oh hot that one burned a bit. Black flames much stronger and gives a slight curse quite powerful and worth of a demon rabbit. Now can the young fox do any magic.

Baal: I haven’t seen Kitsu do any magic by I can see if he can try.

I order kitsu to make a fireball and fire it at the man. Looking at the man the short hair stood on end with the tail sticking up as a yellow ball of fire appeared and launched towards the man and half way to him it expanded greatly before hitting him and raising lots of smoke.

As the smoke cleared the Bishop appeared with a thin clear barrier of water around him.

Slade: now that is impressive to make me us a basic level barrier that young fox has much potential. I cant wait to see how it grows. All in all you three are a powerful group I’m sure I can teach you how to effectively use your magic and not just fire off random fireballs. Now then young lady lets see you then. I believe Stephanie told me you have water and light affinity lets see them.

Lilian: yes sir.

She loads her mana and water starts appearing before forming into ice shards. They fly towards the man but suddenly a ball of light appears in front of him and bursts letting out a bright light just before the ice shards reach him.

I was completely blinded by the light and it took a few seconds for it to clear up. When I looked at Slade he was grinning. In his hand several ice shards where there while some were on the ground around him.

Slade: hahaha that was good really good young lady. Seems you have more grasp of your magic then the boy.

Lilian: I learned from watching mom the few times I saw her use it since she uses the same magic I do.

Slade: ah that explains it. I guess I should have seen that coming considering no one in our church uses darkness magic. Now your pets.

Lilian order plum to attack first. Like usual the horn was quickly encased in ice and she ran towards the man to impale him. He looked rather disappointed at least until the rabbit stopped and the ice horn shot out at him from close range though he caught it all the same.

Slade: oh nice sneak attacks are good as well though we will need to train her abilities. Now then the little fox.

With the same orders to Kumi the little fox tilted her head while she looked at the man and pacing around him a very small white flame appeared on its tail. And like Kitsu she shot it out and it expanded as well engulfing the man. We came out unharmed but unlike Kitsu he looked like he didnt even move.

Slade: holy flames does light and fire damage to its opponents and heals allies as well quite the power though against someone who is also of the holy faction it won’t do much to them but powerful all the same. Well I guess I have seen what I needed please come all of you here and we can begin the training I think would help.

With that we start our training or at least for Lilian. I was subjected to take damage from an orbiting ball of light that constantly damaged me with holy damage. My training was to get rid of my negative affinity to light since I wouldn't be able to use light magic otherwise. One the other hand Lilian was trained in light and water magic which are her specialties.

By the end of the day I was completely drained and really annoyed since all I did was take damage while listening to Slade lecture Lilian on her magic. I was so angry that during the night I left my room and headed into the plains where were covered with rabbits but no foreigners.

I closed my eyes and rewinded all I heard from the bishop as he taught Lilian. I choose water magic first since it seems more possible to us then light. I bring out my mana but unlike I normally do I suppress the urge to let it out like a flame and instead I think of water. Fluid, constantly flowing through the air and ground. As my mana gathers in the hair around me I continued concentrating. When I finally notice I see a few drops of water floating around me. I make them all gather until it was a small water ball about the size of my fist.

Baal: that is...tiring but...at least i...can do it. I imagine the ball turning into ice while pouring mana. Soon I see small ice crystals forming and soon the entire ball of water was a small fist sized ball of ice.

I dont care but I am curious about it so I drop the ball of ice and recast my mana to gather water. This time I gather 3 fist sized balls worth and freezing them was much faster and cost me much less mana.

Baal: I see so they tell me skills I gain so now I just need to listen to that man and train at night until he chooses to train me like lilian.

I practiced the rest of the night making many balls of ice before going home.

Lilian POV

Today we learned magic from the Bishop I was happy to learn more magic but it was strange how he only trained Baal by making him take light based damage. He told us that I was to get him resistance and affinity to light magic to raise. I didn’t question him since he is older but I felt some sort of reluctance aimed towards Baal. Anyway he continued training me and Baal just sat under the ball of light and listened I didn’t know why he just sat there but I found out at night.

I heard him getting up and walking outside. I followed after him to see what he was doing and when I reached the plains behind him I saw him practicing water magic. At first he used tons of mana to summon a small ball of water and freeze it but soon he was making three at a time. Each try he got faster at doing it and better at using his mana with water magic.

I watched him until I saw he was getting ready to leave so I ran home and laid in my bed as he climbed into his bed. I couldn't help but smile at seeing him so focused on training himself like that. I think I will just watch over him while he is outside just to be safe.

Baal POV

I spent a week training my water magic the whole week the Bishop only caused damage to my body but I developed 5% light resistance and my affinity rose to -17% so it wasn't a worthless exercise I also developed a lot of endurance and my health and defence grew a lot. I could say that I had much better defense than Lilian.

By the end of the week I could make 3 ice shards in 5 seconds though that is slower then Lilian who makes 6 in 3 seconds it is still combat worthy and I can train later. I then move on to darkness magic. I dont know how to go about it I think about what I know about it. I asked mom what it involves and she told me that its focus is on curses and making others weaker but there are a few attack spells. One of them is drain spell which are used by Lich or dark mages. Since I dont really know how to imagine these spells I just gather my mana and think of darkness as an empty void in front of me in the shape of a ball. Surprisingly it works, a black ball of black mana forms in between my hands.

Dark Ball

A ball of darkness, this ball is like a mana bolt but besides causing damage it may cause random curses like blinding or confusion.

Baal: hehehe so darkness can be thought of as an empty void who knew I would make an attack spell.

I held the ball in one hand and aiming at a rabbit in the dark field and toss it at it. Because it was black they didn't see it until it slammed into it. Its red eyes which indicated it using night vision turned blurry as it began randomly attacking nearby animals.

Baal: heheh I like this. Maybe I can make that black flame Rook makes now.

I look up and see how high the moon has gotten. Strangely at night I feel stronger than during the day it was almost at its peak so I return home before it gets too late.

The next morning we didn’t go to the Cathedral this time we went to the mages guild with mom.

Steph: well kids here is your second place of learning. You will be trained by a mage in other kinds of magic that the church can’t teach.

Baal: really

This time my eyes were sparkling. Unlike the Bishop this time I will be able to learn magic I can use.

We climbed to the third floor of the wizards guild which was a huge tower which was also the library. The room we entered was just like the one in the church which meant it was a training room. When I asked what the symbols were mom told us that they were special runes that absorbed mana so magic didn’t break them.

In this room sat a really elderly man. He had dark blue robes on, his hair was long, messy and grey with a long beard in the same manner.

Mage: ah are these the promising children you told me about Stephanie?

Steph: yes master Desmond.

Baal: master?

Steph: this is one of the master mages of the wizard guild. The pope personally asked him to teach you two magic.

Desmond: yes and I am curious to see how strong a fallen angel and an imp can grow.

Baal/Lilian: !!!

Steph: hehehe dont worry he was told about you. Now then please stay here and learn well, good luck master.

He smiles and nods towards mom before beckoning us to come closer.

He did the same test Slade did but this time I made sure to add darkness and water magic in as well as fire magic. I tried mixing darkness and fire but couldn’t do it but it was alright he was impressed by how strong in magic I was considering my age. He did the same to lilian but she only used her two known magic.

After that he began teaching both of us. He went over the principles of magic taking about each element and how it was made and how the phenomena around them worked. He told us that the more we know about the elements the faster we can cast and work the spells to the point we won’t need spells anymore and will be able to simple control the element to be the shape and power we want.

After that day our weeks were separated between 3 different teachings. 2 days with the bishop 3 days with Desmond and 2 days with a normal tutor teaching us basic knowledge like math and such. We both loved learning about it and at night we both would go out and hunt until the moon was at its peak before returning home. Heh we are wolf hunters now so we are getting much more money from the bodies we return with.

Plum, Rook, Kitsu and Kumi were also trained in magic as well as physically but they were taken to a special trained a Monster Trainer. Everyday they were like us, very tired, but still had lots a strength to hunt.

I also found I could see Kitsu and Rooks status just like mine. We all had risen lots of levels and were all nearing level 100

When I saw our stats I asked Desmond what happens when we reach level 100.

Desmond: hmm well anything that is considered a monster or animal like the rabbit and fox as well as demons undergo a Rank up. I think fallen angels also undergo a rank up but I don't know what forms it follows but an imp usually becomes a High imp they are powerful hunters and good magic users but I think you might get a variation may be considering where you were raised.

Baal: hmm cool I cant wait I want to get stronger so I can protect those I care for and not be protected in return.

Lilian blushed when I said that and Desmond smiled at my determination.

Desmond: if its like that then we can start more advanced training then. Lets start with a better mediation style than the one used by the church.

I could see a small grin on Desmond’s face but it was enough to send a shiver down my spine and cold sweat began forming as I watched him.

Baal: ”what did I get myself into”
