《Who Cares about an Isekai? Surely not me! (New version)》Chapter 5 - Feeling Welcomed

Ran’s room was well-lit and spacious, with a whiff of mustiness hanging in the air. Still, this is a far cry from her apartment back on Earth. This room had a canopy bed separated from a small boudoir by a folding screen. In an adjacent room, a dresser and a bathroom could be found. The pieces of furniture that decorate this place were a tad outdated and yet the floors were covered with well-maintained carpets. These people even went the extra mile to make the wallpaper look tattered. Ran sat down at a table as she was served with bread, pastries, fruits, and tea. She ate slowly with her gaze fixed on the floor. The snacks didn’t have much taste, her face broke into a grimace. This tea was bland and a bit bitter. She frowned and fixed her eyes on the golden liquid for a long time. She closed her eyes as she noticed her breathing had become heavier. As she put down her cup, her fingers trembled, and the tea spilt on the table. “My apologies, I made a mess,” Ran apologised without raising her head. With skilful hands, the maid moved forward to replace the teacup and clean the table. She had been standing mute and still by the door since they entered the room, tracking Ran’s every movement, her breathing cycle, the fluctuations of mana in the air. As the new cup of tea was served, it tipped on Ran’s hand and spilt its contents on her. Before she could react, the maid quickly grabbed Ran’s hand to wipe it with a handkerchief. This skin-to-skin contact sent a faint static shock through Ran’s body. She winced and retracted her hands and stared blinking at the maid, a grave impression welling up from within her. “I’ve startled Miss. Please forgive me, I will be more careful next time,” the maid said impassively. Ran threw her an indifferent glance and nodded before she lowered her head again. As if in a trance, she stared at her fingers as a cold glint pass through her eyes. Did she just...mark me? Ran thought in a daze. One after the other… Calming herself down, she once again bit her lower lip with force. She didn’t want to lose sight of the bigger picture. She was afraid she would lose her temper and end up biting someone to death. That maid… A chill rose from her heart as she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Not only did this maid monitor her aura and magic fluctuations, she was even bold enough to put a tracking mark on her! She sighed wearily. There was no point in eating and drinking drugged food, so she went and took a nap to cool down and refocus. When she woke up, she stood by the huge bay window. “What kind of name would you like?” She suddenly asked the maid, her gaze still lost outside. “I do not have any preference,” the maid replied. “How about Belle?” A dog’s name. “It fits you,” Ran asked without turning back. “If Ran-sama thinks this way, then please call me so.” “Alright, you’d be Belle from now on,” Ran turned back with sparkling eyes. “Say, Belle, is it okay if I visit the castle?” Belle glanced at Ran to assess her intentions and saw nothing but pure childish curiosity. “I don’t think it’s appropriate,” Belle answered. “How about the library?” Ran probed with puppy eyes. “I do not have permission to access the library,” Belle answered flatly. “How about the garden? Just the garden is fine. I feel a bit suffocated in here.” Without backing down, Ran did not shy away from using the pity card. “Miss shouldn’t be too stubborn,” the maid admonished her flatly. “Please!” Ran pulled her most dejected face and pleaded with a piteous voice. “I need to ask for permission first,” the maid said after hesitating for a second. “Thank you! I really need to get some air,” Rain exclaimed enthusiastically as if she just found a saviour. Belle nodded and excused herself. When she left, Ran clenched her fists tightly. She knew Belle would be back soon, so she tried her best to restrain her anger in deep breaths. Inside the bathroom, she opened the faucet, looked at herself in the mirror, and frowned. She muttered something under her breath. Looking at her reflection, the coldness in her heart felt like it was about to burst. She wet her hair, made them in a messy braid, and put extra effort to make herself look pathetic. Without even bothering to ask for a change of clothes, she went out feeling better. The more she looked an eyesore, the better. “Touring the garden is fine,” the maid declared indifferently as she came back. “Thank you!” Ran flashed her most joyful smile, not minding the annoyed look on Belle’s face.

Delve
Summary – Level 1: Delve is an isekai litrpg that follows an average guy who just happened to wake up in a forest one day. He wasn’t summoned to defeat the demon lord or to save the world or anything like that, at least as far as he can tell. The only creature there to greet him was a regular old squirrel. Soon enough, he meets other people, only to discover that he can’t speak the language, and that not everybody immediately trusts random pajama-wearing strangers they met in the middle of the wilderness. Things generally go downhill from there, at least until the blue boxes start appearing. Delve is a story about finding your way in a new, strange, and dangerous world. It’s about avoiding death, figuring out what the heck is going on, and trying to make some friends along the way. It’s not about getting home, so much as finding a new one. Did I mention that there will be math? Summary – Level 2: Okay, but what are you in for, really? Well, this story is supposed to be realistic, or at least, as realistic as a fantasy litrpg can be. The main character doesn’t instantly become an all-powerful god and murder-hobo his way across the universe. Delve is, at its heart, a progression fantasy, but that progression is meant to feel earned. The numbers in this story actually mean something. Everything is calculated, and if you find a rounding error, I expect you to tell me about it. That said, if math isn’t your cup of tea, there is plenty more that the story has to offer. Characters are meant to feel real, and progression isn’t only about personal power; it’s also about allies, connections, and above all, knowledge. Figuring out how the system works is a significant theme. ... What, you want more details? Okay, fine, but this is going to get a bit spoiler-y. Are you sure? Yes! Really sure? I mean, this summary is practically half as long as the first chap– Now! Okay, okay! The main character becomes a magic user, but he takes a route that is not very popular in adventurer culture, namely that of a support. There is a full magic system with various spells, skills, and abilities, but our MC decides that aura magic is the way to go, and that the only stat worth investing in is mana regeneration. Most people at the Adventurer’s Guild think that this makes him a bit of a dumbass, but he’s playing the long game. We’ll see how that works out for him, won’t we? Because of his build, the MC levels up fast, at least compared to normal people. There are no cheats, though, and he is limited in other ways. There are some clear and pretty obvious downsides to his build. That’s what makes it fun, no? Morals? Our MC has them. Again, we’ll see how that works out for him. Realism, remember? Would you be okay with killing someone and looting their body? I sure hope not. POV? The focus is on the main character, but there will be occasional varying perspectives from people around him, or involved in the events related to the main plot. It isn’t going to jump all over the place. Tech is standard medieval stasis. No smartphones, but the MC does have a technical background. Computers and their programming might be involved. There might even be a bit of uplifting down the road, who knows? Anyway, it isn’t the focus. He isn’t going to invent the gun in chapter 1 and change the face of warfare. Romance is not a major focus. Friendships are more the name of the game, though there will be some characters in romantic relationships. There is exploration, though not as much of the geographical nature as you might expect. It is more about exploration of the system and the culture. The pace is slow and detailed, sometimes verging on slice-of-life. The action is meant to be realistic and grounded in the numbers, and it is intended to have meaning beyond simply punching things until they stop moving. The general tone of the story is grey, and some parts can get quite dark. People die. Sometimes, people with names, but not anywhere near GoT level. There is plenty of light, too, though, to balance the darkness. The world is dangerous, but overcoming that danger is why we’re all here, isn’t it? Anyway, if you’ve made it this far through the summary, you clearly like words. I hope you enjoy the story! Cover by Miha Brumec Summary Updated: 2020-06-14
